Dare I say i think that's the best late-night TV show band I've EVAR heard...the only others that can come close are Eubanks & Co. on Leno...& Sanborn's with Omar [that Sun Night Live thing]...& the one with Will Kennedy [Wayne Brady?]...& THAT may be debatable. Having VC in the chair def didn't hurt, either. ;c)
That's why we love Vinnie. He's bascially on fire in these clips...no lazy-arsed, laid-back groove going on there. It's WAKE-UP / UP your arse. Time to get off that f'n sofa & get some espresso, you sleepy couch-taters! If you'd've dozed off right before this came on, it've made ya soil yer britches when it came blasting on.
And, Vinnie's drums on much of these, esp the toms, sound killin', basically just as i remembered it.

Clip 8 is cool where he rides on his left hand China going into his fill, but I think Clip 9 is the best, where he's doing that 12/8 Afro-Cuban-like thing on the snare/toms in unison. What a rush it must have been to see/play with him. You can tell the rest of the band is anxiously awaiting, "What's Vinnie going to do tonight"?

crack band, Mark Hudson (aka Hudson Brothers, also producer/write-aerosmith among others), Candy Dulfer and Andy Fusco on sax.
I saw a few tapings back when the show existed just to see Vinnie, would go see Mike Baird too when he was doing Thicke Of the Night and hang with him as well. That was a kewl band too, Rick Schlosser would sometimes fill for Baird.
I thought that was JJohnson there, & also noticed Abe filling in [i thought, either he or AJackson], but wasn't sure...Waldman I did not notice! 2 Cool.

Not to turn left, but per what RW said: I always thought Mike was a good & solid player & all, but there was just something sorely lacking in what he brought to the table in Journey after Smith left.
"Dixie Highway" live? Forget about it. "Jonesing for Smith," was more like it.
Sounded like a "studio guy" filling in for the gig, if you get my meaning. I know he's a great & much-recorded studio cat, though; but that "magic" just wasn't there.
What cinched it for me was when he failed to play Larrie Londin's stand-out, simple-yet-effective, 32nd-note HH "flourishes" during Perry's "Oh Sherrie" live [img]graemlins/hmmm.gif[/img] ...kind of like Pocket used to say when he talked about guys who cover Bonzo's grooves leaving out important BD notes... [img]eek.gif[/img] [img]rolleyes.gif[/img] Sacrilege... [img]wink.gif[/img]

Baird with Journey did nothing for me, he's a great guy and a fine player but was a fish out of water for that gig. They should have let Larrie do the gig.

i remember chad wackerman filling in for vinnie as well. he did an outstanding job. i remember getting that same exact kit. which i believe 8" and 10" rack toms and 14" hanging tom. seeing weckl also with that setup finally got me to dive in and do it!

randy, i remember watching fritz coleman's late night show also. i just remember that drummer sitting really high and had a rosewood gretsch kit. he was a fantastic player as well. do you know who it was?

thanks, randy. what happened to him? he was great! just great groove and perfect parts. he owned it!
he was doing some studio stuff, he was involved with doing 'overdubs' for some Hendrix stuff before the family took over and put a stop to it and regained control. Bruce was just the studio guy in all fairness to the situation.
Shedder, thanks a lot for doing these, and obviously a big thanks to Getes Romo for making the footage available to begin with.

Just a little off topic, does anyone know who the bass player is in clip 5 and the bass player in clips 12 and 14? I can recognize Jimmy Johnson and Abe Laboriel but I'm not placing these other 2.
Another off topic: speaking of late night talk shows, you guys remember Herman Mathews with Rick Dees, Chad Wackerman (and Toss Panos) with Dennis Miller, Andy Newmark with David Brenner, Jeff Watts with Jay Leno, etc.,etc.

I'm glad everyone likes the DVDs. I haven't seen anyone mention the 'so perfect' fill he did backing the singer in the four bar fill/solo Vinnie took. One of my favorite things he did on the show. Authority...time...feel...it's all there. I'll try to reference the time track and write back so you can queue it up.
I trust you all saw my 16" calfhide head with autographs? Anyone know how I can get it to Modern Drummer so they can include it in an issue. I think it's more interesting than some of those 'unique' drumsets in back.
