Tama and Roc n Soc are nice thrones. Get one with 3 legs, four legged seats need to place on even, level surfaces or they'll wobble. Always give your throne the "Butt" test. If it's not comfortable you won't practice as long or be comfortable til the end of your gig.
I use a DW and it works great, I don't personally like thrones that swivel with the body movement, stationary is best.
Interesting. I've got the Yamaha mesh throne. It has three legs, and is super comfortable, but I think I'd like to go back to a 'round' throne. The rectangular seat is comfortable, but it's weird when you're pivoting left and right.

I use a Roc N' Soc and find it to be really comfortable. It's got a blue cloth seat because I found that plastic or faux-leather ones made my backside sweat.
I make my drumseat swivel a little bit so I twist my legs to get round the drums rather than my back. To be honest though, I don't really swivel that much on it, it's nice to have the ability to when needed though. It's different with a rounded seat because it's the same all around the edge, but with a formed, motorcycle seat, you need to be in a certain position to get the best comfort...
As far as a base is concerned, I've been looking into gettin a hydrolic one from Gibralter after trying a friends and finding iu to be total ass paradise!
I'm also looking into getting a backrest, but it'll be my first. Sitting around for hours in studios and rehearsal rooms takes it's toll on my back.

Yes it can be fitted with a back rest. I've tried a few with the back rest and they seem to be quite adjestable! I have a red nitro throne which is fun to jump around in.. [img]biggrin.gif[/img]

i tried one of the new pearl ones in a shop recently and it was seriously comfortable. had a backrest but it was vertical rather than horizontal so didnt get in the way.....will buy one when i have the money.

I bought the Tama throne (it was the 'first chair' model, the one with the big-ass seat)... i thought i would get used to it... nope. It was way too cushy and i felt like i was going to fall off and into my set. I went out and bought a Roc 'N Soc seat, replaced the Tama seat and it is great.
It was the best of both worlds because it is heavy duty Tama, but with more compactness than a standard Roc 'N Soc... well, atleast more compact than the silly one with 5 legs and looks like an office chair [img]confused.gif[/img]
Guitar Center is blowing out those Roc 'N Soc seats (just the actual seat, no hardware)... i would look into some combos that you could maybe work with that.
I like a little swivel, i mean, you can't physically swivel too much anyways before your legs get twisted to the side, but i see what Randy is saying... you doing the work, not the chair. On the same token, i don't like a seat that is so cush that i feel like my ass is riding on a poofy white cloud... i like to know that i am sitting on something (no hydraulics for these cheeks please!) I recently got the DW 9100M throne and have been very pleased with it. I didn't realize what I was missing with my old throne. The standard Pearl and Yamaha thrones looked good, but the DW seemed to be the best.
I'm more of a traditionalist, and wanted to stick with a plain round seat top. However, I was going to get whatever type gave me the best support, balance, and comfort.
According to their advertising, DW combines several types of foam designed to give you optimal comfort and support. I think this actually makes a difference, and this seat top performs as well as anything else I've tried.
I was having problems with balance, comfort, and lower back pain with my older Tama throne. It had a plain round seat top, but it was at least an inch or two less in diameter than the new DW. Also the foam had gone mushy and the frame was getting a little wobbly.
I think having a wider, firmer seat top goes a long way toward helping balance and taking strain off your lower back.
And as was mentioned, always get a tri-pod base. A four-leg throne will wobble on anything but a perfectly flat floor.

I agree w/ mja61...I was so surprised at what I was missing when I got a new DW 9000. I had no idea how much a good throne could afect my playing. MY former seat was much softer and I would sink into it...it was comfortable but now I realize it made it harder for me to play. It also moved slightly while the DW is rock solid
I bought that DW throne, and love the seat. I'm using it with my Yamaha base. The Yamaha base goes a bit lower and it's sturdier.

I'm currently using one of those goofy ass Pork Pie super-thick-cushion thrones. Y'know, with the leopard print and gold sides...retarded looking, but damn it sure is comfy. Oh yeah, and I got if for free.

I've always wanted to try the mesh yamaha thrones... they seem great for ventilation, and I am a victim of "swass".

On a sidenote, what's the general concensus on backrests? I always thought some support in the lower back region would benefit my playing. Anyone here use them? why?
i've got a roc n sock with a backrest and it's great. super comfortable. i have a pretty bad back from teaching 5 to 6 hours a day 5 days a week and gigging 3 to 4 nights a week.
plus i have a studio at home so i'm sitting at a computer the rest of the time, that is if i'm not driving to a gig "sitting"
i probably sit 12 hours a day or more and my back doesn't like it much.
i think the best thing you can do for your back if your at the point where your thinking about a backrest it try and get an exercise regiment going for it.
i love my roc n soc but since i've been using it (for about 5 years) i find that when i sit on a kit without one i tire easier. the support muscles are completely out of shape because i can just lean back when i need.
getting my back in shape is one of the things i hope to achieve this year because while a backrest really helps deal with what i have to do every day. it doesn't fix the problem and i'm probably getting worse over time.

i remember that new pearl throne with the backrest being on an md ad. it seems very ergonomic. i like the fact that it has no hydraulics and stay relatively stationary when going around the kit. the backrest seems to be designed to get out of the arm's way. has anyone else tried this? i'm thinking of picking up a new throne myself. i've had my pearl throne for something like 12 years!
I used to have a gibraltar bicycle seat throne which was cheap and wobly and i hated it..so around october i got a pearl round throne with suspension..and at the shop it felt comfotable but once i got home and really started practicing i found out that it was even less comfotable than my gibraltar one.
I've seen the new pearl thrones with the backrest...they are 4 legged and they seem to be specially designed so that the position of the back rest and seat design really helps your back position...check it out!
