Twenty Flight Rockers

Anyone know of this Band or have anything by them? Came across this band tonight while going through some old 7" singles. Transfered them to MP3. Only have 4-tracks by them. They released an album called 6 Yards of cow which one of the tracks is from. Would love to hear the album and any other stuff they may of done.
Mark Laff from Generation X was the drummer from the band. I think Theyre a London Band and were around during the late 80's.
Did a search on the net and found that they maybe a few recordings out there.
They went on to form a band called Speedtwinn which I found some MP3z for. Yet to listen to em.

Have a a feelin I saw The babysitters support the band... but my mermory eludes me on that a little!!??!?!

Never heard of them...but I am a rabid Eddie Cochran fan!!!

Derwood from Generation X was in there, and he is now in an alt-country band.

Funny thing, TFR grew out of Empire, the HM band formed by the more or less exiled half of Generation X. I would now call them the grandaddies of psychobilly.

I have heard of them, but never heard them. There is a ton of stuff out there I should have heard, but my being located in the US has really hurt my abilities to have heard the bands I would love. Back in the day especially, if you didn't have poofy hair, wear spandex, and start every song with a "WOO!" like some retarded Cub fan (local joke...sorry) you got no radio airplay or distribution. The people on here I would expect to be chiming on on this band (if you think I should have) would be Andii, possibly Stacey, but especially Ian (Glamster7).

Not heard any of this stuff. I'd be championing the retard Cub-spandex wearing WOO! band, lol.

Ian is from my Home town!!

Oh, but you've always seemed to have been very keen to the cool bands also. More than once you have chimed in about one of the RnR style bands from your neck of the woods, and have always shown a VERY wide open appreciation for all the styles within our "Glam world", unlike certain closed-minded bastards such as myself. And that Speedtwinn band is REALLY cool. Not so sure about the "Alt-Country" tag they give themselves, as they do have a bit more of the Rockabilly thing going than the pure Country. But I guess really, in some ways, Alt-Country can end up being a bit of a modern Rockabilly depending on the cross breeding you do with your Country.

Carl, "alt-country" is a broad term which includes the neo-rockabillies. John Doe, ex-X, is part of it, and he does that neo-billy sound as well. That's where a lot of the "punks" ended up, in some sort of neo-country.

OT: had some cracking ales in a Young's pub last week, before the spandex WOO! bands at the Underworld (Enuff Z'Nuff - are they Cubs fans?)

I would have to lay money on it that EZ are Cub fans. For some odd reason they are the choice team of all the local musicians and stars. Corrigan is a Cubs fan (one more reason to despise the idiot) and my fave local vocalist, Mr. Ashliegh Wolfgang is a Cubs fan, as evidenced by a tattoo on his arm of the Cub logo and by the picture of Wrigley on the back of the O.P. CD. But Ash is a really cool Cub fan that carries no disliking for the other side of town. I only have a disliking out of joking, and for being a neglected team in a city that should LOVE the Sox for the great history the team has provided.

Hehe, Double Chocolate Stout, Waggle Dance, and Youngs Special were really nice. They do an Oatmeal Stout for the US market too, but I didn't try that one.

Wasn't so long ago that Sox caps were a bit trendy over here.

Ya want to try something VERY wrong, but that is actually amazing? Drop a shot of Chamborg (sic?) into your pint of Double Chocolate and have a Chocolate Raspberry Beer that is amazing! Normally I don't condone the mixing of stuff such as this (even a Black And Tan is just plain WRONG!), but you have to try it just once. I've only had it once, but it was great. I've tried a raspberry beer at our local beer festival, a few years back, and it was really nice. I can imagine with chocolate it would be great.

I think the Double Chocolate is only sold in bottles here, but the Waggle Dance and Special were on handpump.

We get it in bottles, nitro cans, and the very rare establishment will carry it on tap. The nitro cans give the texture I would guess that you kids get over there. I bought some Tetley's Pub Draught in a Nitro and it was the "flat" type of thing that you described when it came out of the can. It isn't really "flat" as it still carries a nice head on it, but it isn't like drinking a Coke, such as a Miller product it.

Thanks for the 2 trks. Have em stored at work at the mo. Haven't had a chance to chek em out yet as have been busy getting the new pc up and running (nothing goes straightforward in the McDonald household I tell ya). Will check out speedtwin as well when I'm straight.

I've been under pressure from Marky to get him his Tattooed Love boys tracks (only joking Marky) lol. Am nearly up to speed but sounds like these bands will be up my alley so to speak.

Finally listened to the Twenty Flight Rockers tracks - Carl was right am loving em.

The guiratist from TFR went on to join Balaam and the Angel. Ian someone. Check out the balaam sites. im sure there will be some info there

Hello there. I was a big fan of TFR during their short-lived heyday - 1985 through 1987. I have lots of pictures and tapes of the band's show for whomever is interested. Mark Laff, ex-Gen X, was the drummer. Gary Twinn was the singer, Ian McKean was the guitarist and went on to play with Balaam and the Angel. Jeff D. Vine was the bassist. TFR were big in England and never toured America.
Great band. Miss them. Would love a reunion!!

We played with them a few times in '85, they were kind of cool. Mark Laff was an honorary member of the Rock 'n' Roll table in Holborn, and was one of only a few drummers in history to share his fags. I think they were kind of eclipsed by the Sputnik media machine that was just starting up at the same time. We billed them as "20 Fat Dockers" at Buttz 'n' Spikes, and the manager didn't like it. Mark was there when "the Major" set himself on fire in the lift in his doss house opposite the Oporto, and his ashes were raining down into our beer,.. but that's another story...

Wow. I remember going to the Oporto when I interned at Melody Maker (RIP), many years ago. Len was the barman, right? I remember a picture of Razzle from Hanoi Rocks was on the wall above our table.

Hey!! They supported us!! (Buttz gets own trumpet out and starts blowing)...We also did a few "all dayers" around the country. Oh yes,.. Len the barman. He was an Arsenal supporting ex-taxi-driving villain. I went to the Oporto last year just for old time sake, and a tear came to the old Red-eyes. Carol still has the Razzle portrait, and actually bought the Rock'n'roll table, she has it in her bedroom. Next time I'm up in the smoke, I'll light a candle for the Oporto,.. and "Gossips"....

THE T.F.R. WERE ONE OF THE BEST BANDS OF THE 80'S.I SEE THEM MANY TIMES, THE BEST WAS AT THE OLD MARQUEE IN WARDOR ST. THE SINGLES I HAVE ARE TOWER BLOCK ROCK & JOHNY SEVEN. I THINK THE LP WAS CALLED 9 MILES OF DEAD COW AFTER A REVIEWER WROTE THERE WAS MORE LEATHER JACKETS IN THE CROWD THAN 9 MILES OF DEAD COW.THE SECOND LP MAY HAVE BEEN CALLED SOMTHING LIKE "GUNS FOR SALE" IT WAS AFTER THEY WENT TO THE STATES AND WAS A BIT BILLY IDOL'ISH BUT WORTH A LISTEN. I ONLY HAVE IT ON A TAPE THE EX HAS THE ALBUM. THE ONLY SONG ON IT FROM THE EARLY GIGS WAS "I WANT YOU BACK". I THINK YOUR RIGHT ABOUT THE FIST ALBUM.

Any way of getting the tape to MP3?

I just bought Twenty Flight Rockers' CD from Amazon.com. All this talk from the board inspired me to track it down. I'm not aware of another TFR album, besides Nine Yards.
The band was so much fun to see in London and it's a shame they never toured the States.

THE ALBUM ON AMAZON IS THE ONE I HAVE BEEN TALKING ABOUT, THERE'S ALSO A NEW YORK SESSIONS DISC WITH THE SAME TRACKS ON, CANT FIND 9 YARDS.

Nine Yards was never released. I didn't know the band recorded in New York.
Does anyone on the board live near Brighton? Mark Laff lives there now -- maybe someone can track him down and he can settle it! I think Ian McKean lives in London and Gary Twinn is in Los Angeles, right? Whatever happened to Jeff D. Vine?
