I'm not really familiar with its playing, apart from knowing is one the most popular pop/rock session drummer, and an idea where is strenght must be.
I think its free and it might be the first time ever a big name drummer comes here, at least that i'm aware of.
I think I should probably go but then again, if his clinics are real boring, I'm going to pass.
Any thoughts ?

I am doing a week long UK clinic tour with Kenny in the first week of August.
I love Kenny A. I've never been to a clinic of his, but he is a fine drummer.

yeah i make it a point to go to every clinic where i feel a drummer is acomplished something important which requires him to have a certain special skill and therefore something new for you to learn from

Everyone can have an opinion of course, and he has a right to share it.

Okay, another example of many I've been talking about on this board that axed down,yet are 100% true.
Kenny Aronoff is great drummer. Period. Of course he's going to sound like shit playing big band jazz. Are you kidding me? Come on. That's not even close to being his element. I'm sure they paid him a lot of money and he just felt honored to be a part of it. Like, Will Calhoun, Neil Peart, and the many other rock greats who can't swing a big band. So cut the guy some slack.
Second, nailing the click is not the goal my friend. Kenny plays on a TON of albums. A TON! Because he has a great feel. Flamming creates that. In my opinion anyone who buries the click all the time, can be replaced by a machine. no one does. Vinnie doesn't, Shawn Pelton doesn't, Gadd doesn't. Yes...THEY CAN, but more often than not chose not to. It's not the best feeling approach.
Kenny works as much as he does because he's a KILLER rock drummer with a beautiful loose feel. I saw clinic of his in 1991 that was a mess as well, but he went on after Jonathan Mover, and Jonathan was playing all this Vinnie esque shit, and Kenny took choppy approach. He can't do that well.
But...he rocks. And he's a great source of info. More so in my opinion than a Thomas Lang or Virgil. Because Kenny can tell you about music and the industry of music. Not 5 over 4 ostinatos and double bass, which people who really play music in the mainstream pop/rock world stay away from like the plague. Mainly because most of those brilliant drummers who practice all the time, can't make a track breath the way Kenny can. A rock/pop track.
Go see the clinic. And let us know. I'm curious what he's like 14 years later.
Oh and..man...if you can groove as hard as Bonnie Raitt(who's drummer is Ricky Fatar) or John Fogerty or any of the great rockers you mentioned, I'll cut off my left testicle. HAHA! Anyone who disses those artists doesn't know what a nice rock groove is.
Don't forget he also played on tracks by Michelle Branch, Smashing Pumkins, and Celine Dion. There quite a few albums I have where Vinnie and Kenny are both on the album.

I saw his clinic the last time he was here (a couple of years ago) and I plan on seeing his clinic when he comes to town in June. Kenny works A LOT for a reason, either being that he can play or is a helluva nice guy who gives the artist what they want. He's a classicly trained percussionist from the University of Indiana, but he decide to make playing drumset his living. It seems to have worked out fine. He has recorded a ton of drum parts which I find very interesting. He could have played them like a typical 2 + 4 drummer would, but he decided to do something a little different. I don't think he's necessarily an all around guy like Vinnie or Gregg Bissonette, but I think he gets called to do what he does best and is excelling in it.
Just my two cents.

One would be surprised by the fact that SOME of those so called "technical masturbaters" can make the music breath REALLY WELL! and actually have a nice pocket and feel to boot. One just has to listen to more than a few clinic clips or some "over the top" fusion recording by the particular artist to formulate a factual and reasonable opinion.

I will say that when I saw Mr. Loaf on VH1 Storytellers some time ago, his drumr [name?] did a great job, very complimentery for the genre.
Kenny is a pop/rock session ace, so what. He's good AT WHAT HE DOES, or he wouldn't get those calls. But, not everyone is going to like everyone/anyone. No biggie. I enjoy lisytening to some of his work. But there are also players I listen to much more. No biggie again. /;c)

Billy Cobham couldn't groove as hard as Kenny Aronoff in a rock track to save his life. Nor would he want to.
Kenny's groove is amazing. It's not my thing, but I know he get's many calls from the same people who can and sometimes do call Vinnie Colaiuta or Steve Gadd if they needed to. But they call Kenny. Why? I don't think it's because he sucks. I'm sure if Vince got the call to play with Melissa he would in a heartbeat. There's more drumming on that gig than let's say Faith Hill, which he was doing for the past few years.
Drum Dick sounds like he's not a drummer.

You must also realize that Kenny and Billy are active in different styles of music. Could Billy play for the artists Kenny has? For the most part, NO. It's interesting to hear Billy and Kenny mentioned in the same sentence. I'm not sure if there is a Kenny Aronoff in Bizarro World that's completely horrible, but the Kenny I saw did a pretty respectable version of the groove to Mahavishnu's 'Vital Transformation'. Was it Billy? No, but who cares? I get a little tired of hearing folks compare this person's playing to another person's with dogmatic statements that one is inferior to the other. You either like it or you don't, but when talking of players of this caliber with a proven, winning track record you skate on thin ice saying they suck.

Altho KA is far from being a fave of mine, I must agree w what fftha, sus [earlier], & especially pete c said with regards to his playing. But I also agree he is way out of his element when speaking of cats of VC, DW, & so on's calibre...oh well...
I can also tell you, altho you already indicated that u r aware of it, that Nashv does indeed have those "exceptions," & a few of them are really frightening players. Maybe not quite VC calibre [who is?], but def very close enough in their own right...one I know personally in particular. Another, just an aquaintance. Both are SCARY chops/phrasing/fusion/schooled guys, & can groove HARD from the gut too, & can play as simply, & as musically, & for what the music calls for. Another, well...he's a groover, indeed more "the KA type" [no laughing, there!] ;cp, And yet another, a hard groover AWA Jeff Phreak who also has the chops...all tour with big name acts [one records the studio stuff AW]. They're just trying to make a living too.

I always thought that the stuff KA played on grooved for what it was, & within the partic genre it usually is. He is a pop & rock 1st call session & touring ace, with good time & ears, for those gigs, not a blow you away fusion beast.
I agree w flar: Jordan, Drayton, etc, good players. A strong time feel is not to be ignored, no matter what the genre. If it sets well & feels good, so be it. Then I can also sit here all day & talk about the other true kings, Gadd, Newmark, Ersk, Jeff, Vega, Marotta, Robinson, Keltner, Purdie, J Keane, on & on. Oh, & Mickey Curry can fat lay down a pop or rock groove like a beast, at least on the sessions & live recordgs I've heard. He's not known as a fusion, chops, or solo guy, but he has a great sense of time & pocket for what he was called for.

There's nothing to call him on.
There are no rights and wrongs when it comes to what you feel when you hear someone. Other than Pelton, Gadd for me is the only on in that list who's over all feel in track make me want to move my hips and cry all at the same time. Garibaldi as amazing as he is was never a session drummer. Omar is, but still, to me Pelton has the best feel.
By the time Pelton is Gadd's age he would have played 10x the amount of recordings. Like SDK, groove wise, I love that thing that Charley Drayton has.
But we can't really argue, they're all great players. Shawn's feel just kills me. I read this in a recording magazine, I don't remember which one. But if you include all the music where Shawn has been sampled, or where they have used loops of his drumming off of a loop CD, as well regular sessions, he has played on more recordings than Purdie and Gadd combined. And he's only about 38. I think.
Opinions are like a^&holes. You know. So let's put this to rest and get crazy dick outta here!
