Remote Hi Hat

What is y'all's thoughts on these?

I have played around with them at the store, but haven't really played one.

When I was playing nothing but electronic, I moved my hi hat pad over to my right -- and of course since it was cabled it didn't matter that the pedal was to my left.

Anyway, I got very used to that -- now playing the acoustic, I am kind of missing that feel. [img]eek.gif[/img]

On the other hand, if the remote hi hat is sluggish . . .

I've looked at the DW and the Pearl.

Thoughts?

I thought they were very cool AND logical - but since I got mine a year ago (dw arm), I have hardly ever used it... was more of a novelty for me and playing hats to my right was not as comfortable as I thought... plus I had to move my ride and second crash a bit. I guess you could say I'm on the fence with em, but if you get used to the aux hat and pull some old-skool Weckl licks from it, then YEAH BABY! [img]tongue.gif[/img]

DW 9000 is the best remote hat.

i created a set up where my main hats were to my right, with pedal in normal place, then just to the left of that pedal i had a normal hat stand, much lower. reason being, the remotes are too stiff for jazz stuff and the like.

i have now gone back to usual hats and use the remote to the left of my kick pedal and just play around with it.

i am also now using the sonor middle pedal which is amazing and totally changes things. great invention.

The middle pedal does make a lot of sense -- wish it was a tad cheaper.

I don't use a rem HH, but I always thought it would be a good idea, or at least perhaps better yet a closed x-hat; also with the LH-FT, congas, or timbales, or the like [HH side - for righteys], esp when you want to cop some of those nifty Weckl/Virg grooves, incorporate latin influenced perc grooves, or Gary Chester New Breed inspired ideas, if you can get it situated just right on your RC/FT side.

That is for sure. Switching back to acoustics from electronics has hurt my body in all sorts of ways. [img]redface.gif[/img]

Why does the snare drum stand have to be exactly where my leg wants to be??!! [img]graemlins/grrr.gif[/img]

That gets me to thinking about racks. I know they seem to be out of favor with a lot of people, but is it just a style thing or is there a reason? I ask because with a rack, you can do things such as moving your snare to the rack and getting the stand out of your way. My electronics had that -- but I have never played an acoustic set with one.

That could be another Drumming Geometry [Angles, Positions] logistical mathematical problem AW.
But mounting your main sn from a rack is in theory a good idea, if you can swing the positioning just right. But I've managed so far w/out it... [img]graemlins/wonder.gif[/img]
There ARE always pros & cons [as in, having a rack AOT not], but I think [lightweight] "racks are cool"...they'll never be 'out' IMHO...I've never cared about what anyone says is 'trendy' [img]wink.gif[/img] ...if it's logical, & it works, so be it...

As a side note, I think i prefer the R side closed [or ever-so-slightly open-washy] X-hats [a la Weck] to the literal remote hats...

I had one for a little while... took it back. The feel isn't there. It feels good in the store, however, when you take it home and put it in your own set-up, you will see what i mean. There is alot to be said for feeling the stick on your hats, feeling that with your foot. Feeling connected to the action with your foot, feeling the direct connection. Besides that, the action just isn't there... it feels remote.

Oh yeah, i have a couple of those things set up, a la Marco. Those are cool, i dig. I tried the remotes because i wanted to set my hats up in a different spot than where a traditional stand would fit, try and get the best of both worlds. However, the remotes don't do it for me. I do like the x-hats, though.

Maybe i'm not Marco and i can't make the remotes work like he does, but i just can't hang with them. However, i can do some cute things with the x-hats [img]biggrin.gif[/img]

Yeah, I'm not too much a big fan of the rem's either. I'm too "set-in-my-ingrained-muscle-memory-ways" with the [regular] hats in the ol' "standard" position. [img]wink.gif[/img] [Right now all the Virg/Mang/Marco types are saying to themselves, "lazy" ;cP] ...but dig on the X's. Nifty [awa obvious] li'l idea...
Great for trying to cop some of those "maybe with a lot more practice I can eventually one day whip 'em like quasi-Virgil" DB-w-hats grooves... /;cP

Well, the more simple solution is to mount your toms off of a stand and then just position the bass drum off-set, so that your set is centered off of the snare and the hi-hat can be brought in closer, toms brought in independant of the bass drum mount, etc.

I hear ya -- that was the reason for my question. Were they "out" due to a reason, or just due to style. I care very little about style (as anyone who sees me knows [img]smile.gif[/img] ). But, if there is a musical/drumming reason, that is a different matter.

Yea, in the old days when I had two bass drums, that is essentially what I did -- liked it a lot better. Still some problems with the hi hat -- and a pain carrying two bass drums!

don't waste your $$$ on that. md has done a couple of articles (once in '88 and then again ca.'94) on "bass drum" ergonomics. just rotate your bass drum out to correct for the angle just as in a double kick setup, but w/ only one drum. it may look weird, but that shouldn't matter.

Yes.
One partial "solution" to this might be to just simply do what you just said, but positioning the whole kit w the kick essentially pointing "straight" out to the FOH [instead of angled to where you would be sitting looking out straight ahead]...This would simply mean that you would prob be sitting a little more facing/angled toward stage left.
Or, a compromise somewhere in between.. [img]wink.gif[/img]
