Yeah Stockley is a great drummer (he plays also keyboards, steel pans...), but he's not on drums on these clips, and I don't think that it's Chris "Daddy" Dave too...

Anyway...

You know what, funny; I was just coming back here to log on & edit my last post here...that I wasn't 100% sure, after watching the clip for the 2nd time around, that this drummer was Stokely & not a hired session/touring gun, which I think it actually is... [img]redface.gif[/img] [img]wink.gif[/img]

He sure does sound like the ASpears/BFMoore style, tho...

He's pushing the groove real hard in certain places, very bright or on top, almost to the point of rushing perhaps, but it's really energetic sounding...he plays some twisted Chambers-esque funky groove-patterns / accent-placement "inversions" between some nice funky / RnB / hip-hop kicks/hits too.... [img]graemlins/thumbs_up.gif[/img]

Anyone know who this drummer [BMH vid-clip] is?

Cool chops but one thing bothers me about those drummers.Don't get me wrong,i love 'em and really dig their drumming but in that kind of music i feel they all sound the same.Tribett,Spears,Frasier moore,Heyward are killer players no doubt about that ,but after having heard all of them play,i couldn't tell the difference between them.
Same sound,especially the snare drum even tho' it fits the music most of the time,same chops and ideas around the kit.
I guess that style of playin' is quite hip at the moment and those cats probably have a huge influence on each other.

Fantastic band. That was a given of course, these guys only have the hottest talent around anyway.

I guess it's pretty hard for these guys NOT to sound the same, esp since this is the bar set at the moment for this genre, & these are the very guys setting it. [img]graemlins/thinking.gif[/img]

But in the blindfold test, I'd also be hard pressed to tell the diff btwn, say, Spears & this cat [img]graemlins/wonder.gif[/img] ...but I's still a pretty good level to be playing at, within this style. ;-)

So Guys, some incredible double drumming by Mint Condition.

On drums : Chris "Daddy" Dave (Kenny Garret, Meshell...) and Stockley.

My favorite is the first one who come from an album named "From The Mint Factory", the second one come from an album named "Definition of A Band", I like this title...

Guys, thanks for posting this stuff! Mint Condition is one of my favorite groups, I dig all their albums as they are all great. "Definition of a Band", "From The Mint Factory" (my favorite one of them all), "Meant To Be Mint", even the new joint.... they are all great! Stokley is a hell of a drummer, tremendous feel/groove, and has a great bag of chops to top it all off. As for Chris Dave, what can I say? Dude is a monster. Absolute, total, MONSTER! Thanks again for posting this fellas, much appreciated.

Hi All--New guy here. Greetings!

I've been reading HOD for a couple months now, hanging back behind the beat. I'm a little nervous after watching some of the recent ...umm..."heated discussions"...so go easy on me if I misstep. "We come in peace."

MeShell/Chris Dave got brought up (even if slightly off-topic from Mint Condition) so I'm taking the plunge of my first post here. I saw Chris last year with MeShell on her "Comfort Woman" tour at the Fillmore in SF--had never heard of him but his playing was unlike anything I'd ever heard. He drove a 4-piece kit with a couple cymbals straight into some crazy infinity I'd never visited, playing so far outside sometimes that it sounded like he wouldn't come back...which made it all the more brilliant when he did. MeShell was also deep in it, both on bass and vocals, singing so far back on the beat it sounded like she was preachin'. Intense.

My friends and I--all musicians born and raised with jazz/fusion--just gaped at each other, only to stumble out afterwards feeling used up and thrown away. You gotta love that feeling when music takes you so far into the groove that you feel wrung out when you're done.

Many of the same musicians from the killer Montreaux clip Muphkin posted, including the aforementioned Chris Dave, are currently touring the US with her Spirit Music Jamia septet. A group of friends and I are checking her out at Yoshi's in Oakland on July 1 (also to celebrate my 35th--wihch will be a really nice present). I think she & crew go back to Europe in the fall.

If you have the opportunity, I would recommend checking out this tour. These cats know how to play, and furthmore have more soul than is probably legal. And if any No.Cal. HODers show up at Yoshi's, I'll see you there.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I actually think this *is* Chris, pre-dreds, judging from the feel, the style of some of the fills, his setup, and the Sabian Evolution Ozone crash I've seen him play. Though as Drumaddix pointed out some of these guys sound similar and use similar gear--I don't have enough experience in the genre to know all these players. Whatever...the playing is tight and I'm down.

So, just sent an e-mail to the site to verify. Perhaps they will know and/or answer, and our mystery will be put to rest.

To give everyone a definate answer, that is not Chris Daddy Dave in that video clip. His name is Terrance Lewis. If you purchase Mint Condition's newest CD (don't remember the name) it comes with a DVD that shows a live performance of them in D.C.

Yes Terry is quite a monster!! He too comes out of the gospel tradition. This cat has incredibly deep pocket and time and groove. The tracks on the DVD are just slammin! I hope that they will release the entire show on DVD sometime. I would love to see Stokley playing. PT>

I guess DA was right--the playing of those guys coming out of the same tradiditon is similar. I can identify characteristics that are similar. I know that Chris Dave influenced a lot of these guys--was Terry one of this whole Philidelphia group?

Speaking of Chris "Daddy" Dave...OH my...just saw MeShell's Spirit Music Jamia at Yoshi's in Oakland on Friday. The concert was incredible. I have never seen anyone play drums like Chris does--a force of nature, like a whole typhoon whuppin a-- on a kit. Fluid and aggressive in the way that I've never seen before. Crazy single stroke roll decrescendos, amazing flowing changing subdivisions, messed up stutters that should be mistakes but aren't. They guy just doesn't give a damn what anyone thinks--he just goes there. And of course MeShell's groove was about 6 feet deep--all the players crawled all around in that. Oliver Lake was a monster on the sax and Michael Cain on the keys as well. If you get a chance, do yourself the favor of checking this tour out.
