Here's some history for you.....
The word "Golf" was originally pronouced "Gowf" by the Scotts. The word is derived from the dutch world "kolf" which means club.
Early courses had anywhere from 5 to 22 holes... and was originally thought to be timed with how long a 5th of liquor would last while playing. St. Andrews decided on the standard of 18 and everyone else followed suit.

People over analyze golf to death. I played a lot in high school and college and had a few simple rules.
Hit the fuck out of your drive.
Chip close to the pin.
Sink the easy putts.
It worked and then I got bored when I could beat all my dad's friends.
Same basic rules apply in tennis.
Hit the ball as fucking hard as you can where your opponent isn't. Or just drop it over the net and watch them stumble. Sort of the drive and chip rule.
I also have rules for raquetball that I'd rather not reveal at this time.
