yeah i got that too! I can't wait to hear it, maybe i will pick up all the other DWB records i dont have yet too
Yep. I'm sure this will sound like all his other albums. I'll dig the drumming for sure though.
The samples seem to indicate that no new ground has been broken on the compositional side of things, that's for sure. I tend to feel that Dave's solo stuff suffers from bland and predictable, but the songs seem to work well in a live setting. I'll probably get the CD anyway, just to support the guy.
To be honest, there isn't really a lot of new music out there that excites me these days.... Maybe Pat Metheny's latest, or Scofield, but that's about it.
I miss the good old days of Holdsworth's first few records, the first records of Vital Information, and the first four or five Jeff Beck records. These days things are sounding too 'pristine' and there's no sense of 'risk' or 'mystery'.
DSOP...I'm right with ya man...
Pat's not doing anything new either though. Scofield is going back to honest real groove music. And that never get's old, thank God.
If it weren't for Antonio Sanchez adding his little latin flavor to the mix, Metheny would be same ole thang. I'd rather listen to Pat with Danny Gottlieb. The best PMG in my opinion.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I was actually referring to the trio stuff that he did with Bill Stewart. I love his latest PMG record too, but it's true that he's rehashing a lot of his sound on that. I hope he releases another trio CD with Antonio too (although I do love Bill Stewart's drumming on the other ones).Quote:

As for Beck, I really hope he records with Vinnie, or at least puts out a live DVD of the tour.
PMG LIVE is the deal. I always make it a point to see them if i get the opportunity. I haven't bought a PMG disc in...I can't remember. Still Life Talking? Travels is the most played PMG disc i own, still to this day. It never gets old...PURE MAGIC. The other DVD w Wertico besides Imaginary Day is nice too [don't own it, but have seen excerpts in music stores & at friend's]. Too bad a Travels VHS wasn't put too present DVD. <font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">No doubt. I was hung up on all the precision after DW & subsequent came out, AWA pop & crossover country...but it's getting old to me now. Not enough grease & ebb & flow. The drum machine was deemed a great invention at the time AWA for the longest...but now, it's a beast w a now seemingly overemphasized life all it's own[?]. Glad i'm not the only one. Is this the dawn of the advent of a retro, post drum machine, "more human" feel movement?! Hopefully so. [I'm not talking about "sloppy" muso time-playing when i say that either. A DM in the hands of a great drumr/muso is a useful tool.]Quote:

To me, VC has long played on top. Now, he CAN loosen it up in the studio for a sessions work. But I don't think either has the Gadd feel, even tho DW sounds as if SG is a huge influence in both approach & groove.
But I ain't gona say anything abouts Mr. W. He's just too good to bag on. Even if he is so precise, because that's his thing. Really, someone just needs to ask him [if they have the bales ;-)]: "Just step away from the click, sir. Step away...if only for a brief moment"... And then really scare us all...oh well; 'guess he's scaaawy enough as it is.

I love Weckl's playing, but I love it more when he's playing on OTHER musicians' recordings. The songwriting with the DWB hasn't been stellar (IMO).
Yeah, but Weck usually pulls a sideways lick out of the hat that makes me go olkaerfbhoijybjpmoiyj.
I hope this doesn't cause an uprising in here, but it's just my humble opinion.
I used to be a huge Dave fan back in the day of Light Years and the band French Toast.
I listened to some of the samples of Muliplicity, and I can't say I relate to Daves musical choices compositionally or groove wise. It sounds exactly like Dave 20 years ago. Precise to the point of no feel, no grease, no emotion. The music is very poorly written in my opinion, and is based around the wierd off beat patterns and rhythmic tutti's that Dave wants to play, to show off his drum chops. To me this isn't music, it's a drum clinic all over again. Instead of listening to the Dave Weckl band I can go put on "The Next Step DVD" because to me, it sounds the same
I'm huge fan of what Dave has accomplished and his technique and touch are beautiful. But his ability to make me feel something when listening to him is nonexistant. And in my opinion so is the idea of any pocket. Being that precise eliminates any pocket, as pocket is playing behind and greasy.
I guess that's one of many differences between Vinnie and Dave.
For some reason they always get grouped together as a drum style, but they are very different. Dave isn't on the session scene, and he never playes polyrhythms of any kind. And most importantly Vinnie has an amazing feel.
I've been wanting to address my feelings on this for sometime, and this thread gave me a window.
Sorry Dave, I'm just not feeling you.

Could Dave possibly have anything more to slay us with, from a drumming standpoint, besides CCEB1 [any], CCABA, Master Plan, Heads Up, Hard-Wired, Rhythm/Soul, Synergy, Trans, or Very/Plugged?! /;-P<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">LMAO - The face that goes w that wouldn't happen to be , , , [if yer drinking something at the time], or would it? ;-)Quote:

I wish Vinnie had outboard gear beefing up his sound like Weckl, whose drums, regardless if it's session or leader, ALWAYS sound superlative.
Ungawa, bwana.
The first few times I listened to the latest Mike Stern record, it seemed pretty lame and 'formulaic' to me....but after six or seven listens, it became one of my favourite records. Maybe I shouldn't be so quick to judge Weckl's new CD after hearing only three short snippets....my bad.
yeah i bought these times, listened once and i was like...:|...i only liked the first tune, chatter, but then someone on here pointed out mirage and i checked out and now i've really got into the record, its amazing!!!! i've got voices too, but havent checked it out properly, should give it a chance soon!
That's how I am with a lot of recordings. Listen once, not too impressed, then listen again later and wow, I didn't hear that before!
I think, for me it depends on how actively I'm listening. If it's in my car for the first go 'round I'll prob miss it, as the act of driving as automatic as it is sometimes, does tend to steal most of my attention. If it's late night at home with the phones on, it has my undivided attention. That's usually when I can be most objective with my listening. But I don't have that luxury very often with the pace I have to keep with the family, job and gigging. I'm usually sleeping when I can so most of my listening ends up in the car.
If y'all don't like him; nobody's holding a gun to your heads to buy the new album. If it's too precise, hey it's like the TV; change the f*^%#^$ channel. I get tired of people saying the same shit about him just before the release of a new side, then the same folks come out and drop his name like he's some old friend after they hear it.
As for the tunes, not all the stuff is written by DW (and IMO the tunes aren't bad). Steve Weingart's contributions have been some marvelous springboards for improvisation (isn't that the essence of jazz composition in the first place?)as were Buzz Feiten's on the earlier things. I'm looking forward to hearing what Gary Meek will bring to the table as well. I've heard some of his stuff and it's great.
I've never been disappointed by any DW or DWB disc. L&VPI just killed me. Yes, the band does sound better live. I would hope so. Any artists that can't kick their own arses live shouldn't be on a stage.
I'm anticipating this release the same as I'm PATIENTLY awaiting word from VC that he will return to the studio to record VCII. I hope when that happens people don't start dis-ing him as well (he does too much off the wall shit or he sounds like Tony or maybe he plays too precise ). "Tweaked" isn't really much of a composition either. It was written as a joke. I LMAO when I first heard it. But let's admit it, it's fun to listen to and who's going to deny VC his indulgence? Not me. I want more and I want more DW too.
Gotta agree with Rythmatist.....
I think everyone will be very happy and surprised with the new CD. Gary is an amazing player and a great composer, just look at his own solo CD or his playing with Aierto and Flora. Steve's Weingardts CD blew my socks off when I played the 1st tune was actually a VERY funky straight ahead funk tune. The man is a grovemonkey at heart aside from all his Chick/Zawinol craziness. Both of these great players have donated to the writing process of this new CD.
My own opinion of course, and shared with Rhythmatist. After having the chance to sit down with the headphones and internalize what was going on in his recent past albums, I find the area's that make me understand his genius and his obvious talent in musical theory. Sure he's gonna blow on his own albums, as I would if I were at his caliber. But I wouldn't go as far as to say
"to the point of no feel, no grease, no emotion. The music is very poorly written in my opinion...... to show off his drum chops. To me this isn't music, it's a drum clinic all over again."
WOW!!!
I love Dave's ballads and the different global influences he brings to the styles of writing and playing. Not to mention his obvious great sounding drums, cymbals, and other combinations of gear.
Five eight??
Was that you gripping the keyboard while you were falling out of your chair listening to Dave??
Well, I guess that's that!
R, let us know how you REALLY feel about it!] ;-p
Actually, my posts were more in jest...the last parag of my 1st one really says how i feel, as i tend to agree w R man on this one. I just can't find the place to bag on a cat like Weckl, of all people. The cat just plain continuously floors me in every aspect of the word.
Altho I can understand how certain folks may get tired of excessive listening to ANY one player, & perhaps some may prefer less 'precison' & more 'feel' or 'grease,' but, Precision IS his GAME. THAT's his bag. ASIDE from the mondo off-the-cuff phrasing, ridiculous technq, & catching those wicked hits/kicks. He DOES groove, it's just very attentive/stickler to the time. Nope. No bagging on Mr. W from my end. But i also listen to a hundred other drumrs, easy.
Besides i can think of many other drumrs who are way more "stiff" as they call it than he, for Gadd's sake. [Hint: some of the new chops/technq phreeks, even tho they too are indeed great at what they do!]...Don't make me name names & start another flame war...
And yeah, he often does up the heavy ghost note deal, but he's just f'n great at it. & he can phlat groove simple & phat w the best of 'em AW. AND w precision timing. ;-)
No, he may or may not have the swing feel of say Elvin, Deej, Tain, or Philly, or the severe greasy funk feel of drumr 'X' [due mostly to the precision thing perhaps], or the authentic ethnic upbringing feel in latin [even he himself has stated that it's his 'gringo fusion' interpretation of it], but he's a brutal contempo fusion mixture of all the above, in his own way & approach. Different. Precise. Scary, evunn. ;-)
His solo discs are just ridiculous, as good as it gets, instrumentally. I'm one of his staunchest defenders. & he's one of my biggest influences, as he is to many another famous & great drumrs...[Can ya say, Tom Knight, G Lear, Zach...the list gets longer... ;-) Yeh. No complaints here. Dave's def a fave of mine, no doubt. Chick def digs him. And from the drumrs CC has played/plays w, well, that says enough for me.
I think the biggest complimtent I can give the guy is, altho i can hear subtle influences, & mainly a Gaddish one, he sounds like HIMSELF & NO other. When you hear him, you KNOW it's him. Single-handedly almost inspired a whole new 'revolution' of sorts in rhythm pertaining to music.
In this respect, i put him in the bag w the Vinnies, Tonys, Buddys, Elvins, Blakeys, Haynes, Fosters, Deejs, Ersks, Hamiltons, Barons, Blades, DiCensos, Jeffs, Tains, Stewarts [Bill & Copeland ;-)], Cobhams, Lennys, Ndugus, Airtos, Acunas, Hakims, Kennedys, Husbands, Wackermans, Triloks, Phillips, Virgils, & Bozzios [i think we git da picha'] of the world...
He has his OWN thing going on. The guy has long now achieved awa maintained an official state of excellence in my book. He ain't following ANYBODY or any trend - he's SETTING them.
Aw, nevermind what i just said. He just plain s*x [I know you guys nec never said THAT]...
...NOT. /;-p
Well, I guess i've said enough here. ;-)

Hey man, everyone has an opinion. To those who said he plays polyrhythms, fine. I don't consider quarter note triplets upside down a polyrhythm. It is technically, but it's the simplest form. Yes I've heard him do that. Dave does not intergrate 5, 7,9,11, or 13 note groupings over 2, 3 or 4 beats. That's more of what I was talking about. So I wasn't wrong. 3 over 4 is as simple as 2 over 4 to my ears. And as far as artificial groupings, he does touch upon those from time to time, but rarely. For those who don't know what I'm saying, artificial groupings are odd groupings of 8th,16th, and other various even rates.
I love Dave's playing. I'm just not fan of his own band, and his drum machine like playing on his own albums. You can argue as much as you like. To me, it's not happening. I'd rather put on an old Chick album like Light Years or The Electric Band, and let Dave blow my face off, while playing some amazingly written music.
No offense to any of you. In my opinion the compositions in his own band are not my favorite. Sorry....This is after all a forum. I never said I didn't like Dave. He's a huge influence on certain areas of my playing. And until someone freaked out, several people voiced the same opinion. Sorry if I don't like everything the man does. I'm not alone.

Yeah, that's actually pretty basic. What flar was talking about is more into the "parts of the engine."
We've been so inundated w the basics of radio music often that when these types of motifs are indulged in, applied, & experimented with [as flar said, more coloring than math - true], some folks get lost.
As a young person weened on commrcl radio, i rem a time when any & all of this was quite alien & perplexing, until i got into the deeper musical application AWA players...there's always something to experiment with & learn.
The breakdown & premise [to understand it] is indeed mathematical [or, "fractionary"]; however, the musical application is indeed beyond just that..."coloring."

By saying "displacing the 2 1/16th earlier," you're actually saying that this is implied [the "2" sounding a 16th early - ] because of the accent on the "a" of 1 [on the 1st note of the 1st groupg of 4-sixteenths, after the 1st grouping of 3], & subsequently on the "a" of 2 & also the 3, & possibly again on the "a" of 4 [the last note of the 5-groupg] ...in essence implying the shifting of the groove or phrasing 1/16th earlier [at same said "a" of 1]? it's not just math though. Drummers like Tain, Vinnie, Ari, Hass, Humphrey and others use it as a color. It sounds uneven it's great way to set up certain things in a song. For example this is one thing Tain and Hass do a lot in their jazz playing.
If you're thinking in a "2's and 3's" breakdown of rhythm, they'll take a two and play a 5 or 7 over it. I've seen Hass play 9 over 7 by placing a five over the first to half notes(1,2,3,4)(5:2) and then a four over the last 3 quarters(4:3), creating a 9. Weckl never uses that kind of coloration. I love guys Dan Wiess, Joel Taylor,Hass, Tain and prolly some in here, that use rhythms like that to make music breathe differently.
Weckl, is undisputedly once of the greatest drummers in the history of drumming. I'm not comparing him to anyone as he's in his own league. I just mentioned these other guys as people who do use polyrhythms in a way where it doesn't interfere. And of course. VINCE..
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">i would love to see this writtn out. rob i get what youre saying but (5:2)+ (4:3)doesn't = 9:7, maybe 9:5?Quote:

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Sure, similarly, the difference between 4 groups of 7 and 7 groups of 4 being the sequence of the accents. Some drummers get incredibly convoluted describing very basic math .Quote:

I saw Joey in the early 90's at the Spud and he was Mr Paradiddle and very busy.
I then saw him last year and he was a totally different drummer...he was a musician playing drums. His feel was light and touch graceful. He let space dictate and played for each song individually w/o inserting his stamp/signature as a drummer. Very mature stuff happenin' that night.
Luke rules. I saw him w/TOTO last year and his performance couldn't have been more passionate. He was playing before a home crowd at the Agoura Theatre off the 101 freeway.
