I ran across this website today, which I had never heard of, and thought I'd share it with everyone since I know there are a lot of fans of gospel/R&B drumming on here. They have a few videos up and it looks like they'll be releasing some instructional dvds.

Haha Eric laying it down real heavy! That was cool. What a great lick. When orchestrating the pattern over the set you can come up with endless variations!

One thing I've noticed about gospel type drummers is that they really spank the high hats, basically hitting hard on every note, rather than using a Moeller method on hats like like most drummers.

I remember seeing Pridgen practice at Berklee one time. I was practicing in the Wenger next to his and I had to stop to write something down then I heard someone sounding like Dennis and absolutely killin' it. I just sat there and listened for about 10 minutes straight and just totally diggin' on how he was executing his stuff and how articulate it all sounded. At that point I just had to see who the hell it was and I opened the door and there's like 2-3 other guys standing at a distance listening in awe or probably absolute horror.
I hope he continues to develop and make a name for himself. He seems to have a good attitude and a love for the instrument. [img]graemlins/thumbs_up.gif[/img]

That is due to the nature of contempory R&B. The hi hats are usually programmed with little or no dynamic. You need a technique, (usually with the shoulder of the stick) to be able to get a solid and consistant 'programmed' sound.
Also the roots of these guys is in Church where they are more often than not, struggling to be heard...

Eric Moore's pattern is a grouping of 5 RLRFF, not a polyrhythm, as 3 over 2 suggests.

It always seemed to me that maybe Dennis & Carter B had some roots in the gosp church. It wouldn't aurprise me at all if guys such as Spears, Tribbett, Ted C, C Dave, BFMoore, McCurdy, TG, & the Mint Condition live cat have roots in it AW...in fact, i'd be surprised if they didn't.
It's true, these "neo-soul," RnB/Soul/Motown/Gosp type of cats have now become the trendy rage [that's not said in a bad way as is my usual ;-)], because many if not all hip-hop rhythms seem to draw from these type of influences.

I've also heard that Marvin McQuitty has been playing with Isreal, so either way you can't go wrong. I love Marvin's playing.

pridgen came off as though he was on something (i was ready shut it off), but then when he talked, getting past all the hip-hop slang, was humble and knew what he was talking about. obviously, he's got chops for days and can tell he's studied alot of drummers and put time into his skills. also,i really liked his tom groove that he later used as a lick towards the end of vid.
the best quote was: (paraphrased) "i got modern drummer when dennis had gerry curls!..". LMAO

Why is it that my WMP plays some of these clips just fine, but with others (some from Gospelchops), the video repeatedly freezes then jumps ahead to match the audio and freezes again?

HOLY CRAP! Where was I when this thread was hoppin'!? Man, I can't believe I overlooked this site... looks like all the cats with chops are in Gospel nowadays, oddly enough. Who would have thought that people would rip it up like this in church! Heheheh.
Da Chooch, Pridgeden was not on something. He was high on life (and his amazing drum abilities no doubt!). I hope. Wow... this guy (kid?!) is a monster... but there was a lot of flailing, I had to pause it half way through cause I was overloaded with licks... does he groove at all?! Smokin' approach, very aggressive and energetic... with skills to power his attack.
I thought it was pretty off-the-wall how Demiyon Hall went on about how drumming applies to "delivering a demon" and how people can have a total religious experience form hearing one of his toms. [img]graemlins/wonder.gif[/img]
