hey DC> thanks so much for the awesome videos. theyh are pretty badass... I was kinda wierded out at how low Vinnie was sitting!! I remember reading in his interview how he liked to sit low but that was way low!!.

Is it just me, or...

It seems that every time i try to DL any files hosted from this particular share site, it "times out" before the entire DL is completed...all 3 DLs cut off b4 the performance is over & are not the full amount of MBs that's stated on the first page or so...

It is killer stuff, of what 'comes through,' but i can still only get a partial file after several DLs each...frustrating...

After watching these videos, (no problem downloading them BTW), all I can say is...."Man, those guys did a lot of drugs!" [img]confused.gif[/img]

Here's a couple of questions.
If zappa were alive today, do you think his shows would still have the same eccentricity and madness, with the musicians all dressing up and doing comical things?

More interestingly, who do you reckon would be drumming for him in 2005 assuming he was still performing all the complex stuff he did back then such as the black page, etc?

I think he would have become a characiture of himself by now. Like Ozzy Ozbourne. He would still be trying to be out there, but it would seem contrived. As we grow older, we change and mellow. Part of it may just be our impression of them, but witness all of the 70's and 80's groups that are touring again. In some cases, they still might sound good, but it's hard to take a 60 year old man prancing around the stage seriously (Mick Jagger).

Of what i got, the clip w the 'call & response' - Belushi seemingly improv'g those crazy vocals & FZ's band then mirroring/echoing the rhythmic nature of each, well that is just killin'.
In the moment, historical TV music magic.

To answer that other ?, I think FZ would've prob gotten around to calling Virgil, or Mangini, R Gratton, Minnemann, possibly Jarzombek...prob even the Wreckmeister...these seem like the most likely suited candidates stylistically. Michaud? /;-)

My [probable] take on it is that Frank would've possibly not wanted to cliche himself, so he'd prob let the 70s/80s-ish vibes lie like a dead dog...as in, been there, done that...unless he were to intentionally charicature-ize & parody himself within that very time period, or the period itself. But then I'm not FZ either. But i think that's what he may have done./;-)

I think Minnemann would be perfect for that music if Frank was still alive... JMO. His personality suits it so well and his playing, well... need i say anything?!

SSmithite : Altho, some of his musicians most probably did drugs, Frank himself was very much against substance abuse, and thats probably the cause of some of them not lasting so long in his band.

I would also disagree that would have become a parody of himself like Ozzy did or that he would have mellowed out.

First of all, if you look at his last recordings (Civilization Ph.3 and the music performed by the Ensemble Modern), he was certainly juggling with new musical elements (synclavier etc.), pretty far from his mid-70's to 82-84 output, nothing really mellow. So I doubt he would have return to that, altho it could be argued that he did "recycle" alot of his past compositions and good portions of his concerts contained old crowd-pleasers from the 70's.

Also, I'd very much like to see which drummer he would choose today, but I keep in mind that he probably would not have a rocking teenage combo anymore. If he did return to that format, it would probably still be Chad W. [img]wink.gif[/img] You know just to not have a new drummer learn like 200+ songs all over again and the hand signals. (Donati would get my vote [img]tongue.gif[/img] )

Pete Zeldman would have fitted perfectly playing wise and personality wise.

FFTHA: Fair enough. I'm not a big Zappa fan so I bow to your expertise. But boy when you watch those videos, they were all pretty far out there. He may have been the only one that was not trippin' on something! You know Belushi was.

in the dvd i hosted some time ago (the 78 germany show with vinnie)

the body guard is saying that frank would never do drugs and he's against all that stuff and he won't even take some medicine when he's sick but then he is shown smoking a cigarette and doing seal calls with vinnie
