I'm going. I got tickets a long time ago. I'll post a review, but I'm not planning on recording the show.
I caught them a yr + half ago or so when they made the rounds [SE US]. Kicked arse, i don't care what a poo-pooer [parade-pisser] might have to say. Whether it's his band [PMG] or trio; live, IMO it's the shedt.

I saw the full band earlier this year too on what was apparently their worst gig ever, and they were really horrible.
I hope the trio thing is better.
The band was in TOP form last night. For the second half of the show they were joined by David Sanchez on saxophone.
Antonio was brilliant, but something about his touch leaves me cold. He kept doing this thing where he'd press the sticks into the heads and it just doesn't sound pleasing to my ears. He plays very 'percussively' in that he hits rims and uses his sidestick more than most. He never seems to just hit the tom and get a nice tone out of it.
But hey, I'm nit-picking now. It was a fantastic, fantastic show and I thoroughly enjoyed myself (having second row seats helps too....)

Frequently have & have heard complaints about AS' live sound tho. Whether it's he or the FOH. Kick never seems to dominate ever either.
But i ain't sayin' squat about his playing. Any small qualms i might have about any incidental playing things are overwhelmed by his overall performance expertise. [img]wink.gif[/img] & when he';s [frequently] busy, it doesnt bother me in the least.
Overall, consistently a great bunch of genre-meshing live musicians.

I really love everything about his playing EXCEPT for his touch on the toms. That's it.
Antonio is like a classical musician in my opinion. He's very musical, has plenty of ability, but I just don't feel the groove. I will go as far as to say in my opinion, this guy has no pocket. Swing needs to swing, regardless of how intellectual the interplay is, or how many latin rhythms he can play over the left foot clave. Ultimately if the groove isn't there, how is any of that important?
Well, i suppose pocket might not be his forte[?]...I didn't hear much "pocket" music being played the night i saw the trio, but...
I guess we're starting another infamous "what is pocket [or groove, or jazz]" thread here.
I'll go ahead & re-start it by saying Donati doesn't have pocket either. [img]wink.gif[/img]

Funny thing is that Antonio came from a rock background when he was growing up... one would think he would be more bottom heavy than he is, more digging into the pocket, so to speak.

Pat's is not exactly a pocket gig. I suspect Antonio can pull it out when playing pocket music.
Antonio's groove and swing last night was very good, and much better than I've heard him play before. He's definitely reached a new level of telepathy with Pat.
I like Antonio when he's playing open cymbal/latin music.
I tend to agree about his feel though. I don't feel it either.
I think it may be because he's not american and did not grow up with R+B, Rock, and Pop like we did. I don't believe he was checking that music out. He doesn't have slightest element of groove in his playing. He's more like a free painter. His musicality and chops are why he's in demand.

Still, when i last saw them, i really dug the shows [PMG, then PMT], as i usually do when i see Pat's groups live. Anything beyond the standard eMpTyV fare gets me wittle hawt ta' pitter-patter-palpitatin', don't'cha' know...

I saw him with Chris Potter not too long ago. About 3 weeks ago.
It was nice, but it didn't swing as far as I'm concerned.

Wtached the modern drummer's fest yesterday and Antonio didn't really do it for me.The guy has great skills but he was all over the place with his clave thing.
MAybe it's me you know.Having grown up with "pop" music,i like to hear a good ol' 2 and 4 every once in a while.While watching his section i found myself counting in vain,desperateky looking for the one.I even felt he was looking the clave at soem point but i assume it was me who was totally lost!! Anyways,the one drummer that really made it for me is Nathaniel Townsley.that dude is a monster man.
He totally ripped it.I really enjoyed his trio,especially the bassist with the vocoder that i had never heard used that way before.
NT was totally in command of his kit,he had amazing dynamics and a nice bag of chops too.
Really looking forward to hear/see him play again.
I know he's playing with Joe Zawinul and Linley on bass,whom i've got the pleasure to play with a couple of times,in a jam situation.He's a badass too and play the piano as well.Just sick!!
