Okay here ya go.
Glam Rock was an English phoenomina of the early 70's, it's main identifying mark wasn't the clothes worn or the name of the singer, but the rhythm of the music. A very basic tribal 4 on the floor pervades glam rock.. sometimes played on the floor tom tom ala' Gary Glitter/Suzi Quatro sometimes the whole band just stomped along on the beat like Slade or T-Rex, but this was rock'n'roll.. pure and simple.
Draw a line from the birth of rock'n'roll in the '50's to the moment when Rock reached it's evolutionary peak and started to feed on itself with Punk Rock in the mid 70's, everything since has more or less been an ironic pastiche of something that came before.. either a retro nod.. or a blatant copy.. Grunge? nah.. you've never heard a Pink Fairies record.. Techno? no.. we're talking Rock'n'Roll here.. Disco? ...I said ROCK'N'ROLL!
Start with Elvis.. Meet the Beatles.. get Psychedelicised.. Prog-rock came next.. then Punk.. except.. no, step back a bit, during the Prog-Rock years of the early 70's some folk didn't want 20 minute epic songs, they wern't interested in classical music, time changes or augmented 7th chords.. these people harked back to the glory days of cartoon rock, the late 50's early 60's when the "Jukebox Hall" (? Gary Glitter) pumped out dance tunes and boy met girl.. when rock was king and too dress *UP* was cool.. add this movement to the decade taste forgot (Stand up the 70's!) and what have you got? the freakshow outrage of Glam Rock!
At the time Glam was totally OUT. un-hip.. a joke.. those of us with Sweet records were laughed at by our "Yes-fan" friends.. Slade were a Joke as were T-Rex.. even the mighty David Bowie was a "pop star" laughed at by "real" music fans who derided the make-up and the hair as proof that they in their dirty jeans were cool. Bowie was only rehabilitated when Punk bands started namedropping him.. as were the majority of Glam bands whose 3 minute sonic outbursts formed part of the blueprint for UK punk.. the US version fed more on the Velvet Underground and the Stooges, but just listen to "Action" by the Sweet or anything by T-Rex or Alice Cooper and you can almost feel the UK version of Punk welling up in the background..

Thank yopui Marcus. Bloody good and interesting.
I like T-Rex myself and Sweet.
I grew up listening to the Sweet. Great live band too. Best clothes for Top of the Pops.
Many years ago in the late 80's i used to frequent the Hippodrome in London, trying to get in with the in crowd, the music whore that i was then (still am come to think of it !) anywhooooo one particular night, sat upstairs with a coupla buddies in said venue, anyway, we were scoping out Iron maiden members drinking champagne whilst enjoying lotsa famale company, when Brian Connolly (the Sweet..) walks past us absolutely fooking legless, "Hey man its .. Brian from the sweet i said to my Guitarist buddy Wil, and as i pointed Brian went arse over tit, over two tables, fooking champers went everywhere as he hit the deck and was out cold, man i laughed so much i think i remeber nearly shitting myself, it was that funny ! Better still and later that night, as id made my way downstairs, and was on the phone to my Girlfreind describing what i'd just seen, a gravely voice from behind said barked .. "For Fucks sake are you going to be on that Furking phone all night.." er .. i wont be long .. er Lemmy (Motorhead..)

Nice story. The Hippodrome on Wednesday nights were good fun. Did you go to the Royal George and Busby's too?
I once ran onto the dance floor at the Mayfair in Newcastle only to find out that someone had spilt a load of beer on the floor. I skidded halfway across the floor before loosing my balance and going A over T landing flat on my back.
Got a round of aplause for my trouble!
AND I was stone cold sober!
cowboy boots + beer = no grip
EXACTLY!
One of my mates did the exact same thing in Busby's. Good job it was earlyish, and the place was pretty empty. The temptation to air-guitar to Still Of The Night was too much for him. He still tried to look cool as if he meant to be on his knees though, hahaha
Can't believe I threw those boots away!
What was I thinking? they were the same "Aces" boots as on the back of "Kill City Dragons - Let them eat cake" cost me ?100 down kensington market
Same thing here....cowboy boots and rocked out and ready to go....It started to pour bigtime...with hail as well....needless to say, as I ran into the venue...as soon as my boots left concrete and stepped onto tile....Let's just say I became a human bowling ball....hahaha!
In Texas no chance you must have been on holiday in Scotland.

Hey Stacie .. regards The Hippodrome on Wednesday nights were good fun. Did you go to the Royal George and Busby's too?
Nahh it was (forgive my spellin' here) .. Intrepid Fox then straigh on to Hippo .. and yeah twas on a Wednesday, I remember leaving at around 2 am one morning with a car full of mates, and fell asleep whilst driving home in the fast lane, i can remeber being rudely awaken'd by my car hitting the central barrier, as luck would have it i managed to stay in control of mi motor, and pull it over to the side to empty my undies, suffice to say, the offside of my car was a little worse for wear, but hey we all survived, and now i look back on this incident, im quite chuffed we got away with just damage to the car, as i suppose it could have been a lot, lot worse !!

I never wore cowboy boots. I was always a combat or engineer boot guy.

Those are the exact same ones I still have. Though I never buckled the top buckle, and mine have numerous belt straps, including spikes. I still love mine, but they are less than comfy. I now prefer a nice creeper.
Only went to the Hippodrome a few times (Wrathchild and Lisa Dominique stick in my mind, for some reason!), but got to Busby's quite a lot, which is now the Mean Fiddler (Astoria basement).
The trips home were a killer. We'd always stop at the Shell garage and wake up the guy asleep at the night hatch, order munchies one thing at a time and make him walk round the shop to get them. Cheesy Wotsits were our staple diet. The cats eyes and the bumpy strip on the motorway kept us alive several times. Going to work the next morning with matchsticks to keep our eyes open, haha.
Ahhhhhh yes .. the good old days ! my munchie attack was only quelled by filling my face with a couple of Ginsters buffet bars (MMMmmmmmmmmmmmmm .. buffet barz..) an entire meal in one delich roll, that can be eaten with one hand whilst driving ! ( try doing that with a big mac .. no chance !)
Sweeeeeeet !

Pork farms pasties always kept me goin on the journey home. One night though we had been to the marquee to see GnR and then across the street to the stMoritz,as we left London back to Notts our windscreen went through,we ended up driving back in our sleepin bags we used to keep in the boot for emergencies,(incase we didnt pull lol)we must have stopped at every service station for a piss on the way back due to extreme cold, next day a guy knocked on our door said he had a windscreen we could have for a tenner and then went on to fit it for us,great times, wonder what happened to that mustard coloured Austin Marina with a black vinyl roof?
Bowie, T. Rex, Slade, Sweet are great.
Its weird how more people don't know/like T. Rex because they still have songs on TV adverts all the time.
