D@mn Hurricanes

Hey everyone (thanks for the email, Jace).

I know it's been a long time since I dropped by, but wanted to give you all an update on myself and relatives.

Yes, I'm originally from New Orleans and my mom and father and other relatives still live there. Katrina had various effects on them. All of my relatives are physically ok. My mom and step-dad's house had very minor damage (they live just west of the city) and are currently housing some friends and relatives who lost their homes. My father's home was lost (he lived in New Orleans East which was hit hard). So, lots of property loss, but everyone's safe and most have a job to go back to.

Hurricane Rita: gf, myself and other relatives have evacuated to Center, Tx which is in the northeast section of Texas, kinda near the border with Louisiana (Shevreport area). We protected the house as much as we could before we left and we're hoping for the best. The good news is that Rita now looks to be hitting east of Houston and has dropped in strength. This bodes better for our house.

The only problem is that the current track will take Rita to where we currently are by Saturday night/Sunday. They predict we'll get Category 1 or Tropical Storm type weather up here. We're getting extra supplies and had an adventure this morning trying to find gas for the cars. Water, ice, bread, and gas are extremely hard to find. We did stock up as much as we could before we left Houston.

Don't know when we'll head home. It all depends on the weather and road conditions here in Center. I expect we'll be safe, though.

Otherwise, I'm surviving. Life's been a bit tough right now due to some mental health issues that I may go into at a later date.

What about the Firebird clan I know they are in Killeen but I have no idea where in Texas that is?

Actually Bird packed up his nest, and is probably in the middle of resettling in North Carolina.

I'm glad you and your family are okay Bran, and I hope the recent storms don't unsettle you too much. :)

yeesh we are out the loop....has it been longer than I thought? Well the short of it is that she broke up with me. She's alive and well in Texas and I still think of her as a great friend. I do miss her, but life goes on right? But at least she's still my friend,I don't know many couples who break up that can say that.

So, Wilma's a Cat 5 now...

I'm kinda wishing I were back in the frigid north. We're trying to figure out where to hole up in case Wilma doesn't turn quite so much west as they think it will. MS is pretty flat, though, so there aren't a lot of options.

Shadowcat, I will send all my energy towards turning the hurricane. Hopefully it will be significant weaker when it hits our coast.

It was great seeing you at the convention. I have some good picts. I'll send you a link when I can.

Hello, all, I'm new to hostboard and you seem like a really nice bunch! I'm sorry I didn't check you out sooner, I spent most of my time at sipfans.com which is currently down.

We had a hurricane thread as well, checking in to see if members that were in that region were okay, and it's nice to see another community care for it's fellow members so much.

How high are these "hills"? I should probably just pull up a topo, but I'm so tired of maps right now, it isn't funny. I've blown through 500 pages of a GIS book in three days.

Anyways... Every model shows Wilma making this weird 90 degree turn. No one here really believes that'll happen, so we're stocking up on supplies, just in case.

I'm kind of lucky to live in Wisconsin, we are pretty natural disaster-free. I used to live in Illinois where we were subject to the occassional tornado, but Wisconsin is less prone to that as we are a "hilly" state.

Now, if it weren't so darn cold in the winter!

Thanks for the welcome, I heard that the oreo introduction was founded with hostboard! Nice to have an "original" oreo!

I don't know, I've been caught in a few blizzards I'd call natural disasters.

Yeah, some of the blizzards are pretty brutal. Luckily it's never caused harm to me or my loved ones. I tend to like blizzards, well I suppose I should say I USED to before I moved to a place where I have to shovel! [img]tongue.gif[/img]

yes, I agree with stasia, blizzards ae fun untill you have to:A)drive anywhere, or B) shovel, especally by yourself.

S'cat: I don't know all the specifics (mainly 'cause I've not bothered to look them up) but to my mind, if you stood at a point where you were basically level with the river and decided to go to my parents' house, you'd be moving in a continuous upward slope. That is, the river would have to do some serious rising in order to reach their house.

One thing about earthquakes...there is absolutely nothing you can do to really prepare...except to anticipate everything around you falling down...and no one can predict one yet... On a lighter note...Garrison Kellor actually said something funny this weekend..."Maybe we should name our Blizzards like the hurricanes...then more people would talk about them more, like the hurricaines...You,know...like.."Al"...Bob....Carl. ...Dave..Earl....then again...."
