This past week I got to go home to visit my family, subsequently I got to play with my doll collection that is temporarily residing with my mother until my fiance and I get a house. (we put in an offer on a nice acre in northern NH yesterday )
anyways while I was playing with my girls for the first time in 8 months I noticed that my dear Sam's right eye is remarkably lighter than the other. She is an older doll, she's 16... and has the speckled look brown eyes.. not the newer ones that have two colors of swirled brown like Josefina, addy, etc. I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it, but I'm afraid that she is getting the dreaded silver eye. I'm crushed, she's the most cherished doll in my whole collection.
I've seen dolls on ebay with silver eyes and its kinda creepy. Wish I knew what I could do to keep it from progressing. does anyone have any ideas? My poor Sam!!!

I'm sorry about your Samantha!
Much to my dismay I am one of the resident "silver eye experts." Here are photos:

It seems to happen in a ring. There is no way to keep it from progressing. The good news is that my Molly has had one eye develop the silver eye condition, and it has not gotten any worse in a year's time. Like your Samantha, Molly is also 16.
You can get the head replaced, but to me that is like replacing the whole doll that I cherished as a young child. I've decided it just makes Molly extra-special!

You know, this is a really interesting point! I hadn't even thought about it. I've never seen a Lissie with silver eye, and I have yet to see a Sam with a silver eye. And what do they have in common? - they're the only two historicals with speckled eyes, not swirled! Of course, this doesn't mean it hasn't happened. I haven't seen a Kaya with silver eye yet, either, but she's new. However, it is interesting to note the differences in eye type. I looked through all the closeup pics of the AGTs also, and in some of them it's hard to tell, but it looks like they all have swirled eyes except the green and hazel-eyed girls. Those are speckled.
I wonder - is there a difference between swirled and speckled eyes when it comes to silver eye?
RNSeamstress, my Sam and I will keep our fingers crossed for your Sam! Or at least, I will. Samantha would if she could!

I thought the speckled ones (older brown, hazel, and Felicity green) can't get silver eye. They can delaminate, and get murky but they will never entirely lose thier color

I'm not sure if it can be considered silver eye, but my Sam has one lighter brown eye than the other. She is also 16 years old. It is kind of weird looking, but her eye has been this way for a couple of years now. I'm just waiting for the other eye to go lighter so she'll have a matching pair.

I couldn't find the photos of the silver eye? I just got a link to do you have too many dolls? How do I find these pictures?

Oopsies! Sorry about linking to the wrong page! (I have the respiratory flu, and right now I'm wondering if my brain is what "flu" away!) Here is the page--I also fixed it in my earlier post: http://www.angelfire.com/mi/FAST/silvereye.html

It's strange that two people now have Sams with lightening eyes. Coincidence? I'm beginning to think not.
Ok, here's another one for the silver eye experts.
My '93 Samantha speckled eyes, and my post above was a sort of last-ditch effort to get silver eye off my mind! Samantha has a very light gray ring around the colored part of her left eye. It looks like a contact lens ring. When you said ring, Melissa, you had me really worried!! But Sam's ring is a matte gray, not metallic silver, and it is outside the colored part, not inside, like Molly's there in your pictures. Sam's lens ring is not noticeable until you look at her eye very closely. I didn't even notice it until I learned about silver eye a few months back on this board! Then I decided to check things out and that's when I discovered it. It hasn't gotten any worse since then, knock on wood, though for all I know she's had it since the very beginning. What do you think? I wish I could take pictures, but I don't have a camera good enough to take that sharp of such a close-up pic. Tomorrow, I'll see if I can find someone who does.
I hope you're feeling better soon, Melissa! And Smoredrama, that's such a cute halloween pic!

Hi, I am new to this board, but have been lurking for a couple of weeks.
I wanted to post that two of my daughter's dolls have silver eye: Molly and Kirsten. One both of these dolls, both of their eyes have it in varying degrees. Both were probably bought from AG around 93-95. I am guessing since we started buying AG dolls back in 1989.

By default they replace the whole head (because it's easier than eye replacement), so make sure before sending her in that it's clear that only the eye will be changed. It might be a good idea to talk to someone here who had just an eye replaced, and see who they dealt with there and how they went about requesting the eye change.
Good luck with everything!
I feel so badly for anyone this happens to. It's such a shock, and it happens so quickly--one day your doll is okay, and the next the ring is there!
Welcome to the board, Gena!

Huh, ya'll's Sam eyes are different from mine. Mine are not like my Josie's or even Marisol's, but they are not like that either. They're...smaller, I guess, and are not really shiny. How weird! Although, I do think she and my Lissie are from that brief period when they were producing in Hungary, because they do look very different from my other PM dolls. I bought them from PC 13 years ago or so, but they look different. (I think they're prettier, but I could be biased )

I called AG customer service yesterday and asked about silver eye. The CS person said that silver eye was a defect and that they would replace it for free (just for my postage). I also asked about having Kirsten's hair redone since it still has one original braid and I can't do anything with the other one and she said that the cost would just be the $20 for the hair. Putting the two questions together, I PRESUME that they would replace the eyes and not the head, but I will definately check again before I send her in. Has anybody done this?

Yes. AG does replace eyes. Several members here have had just the eyes replaced. I think they mean the cost to fix her hair would be $20 at the doll hair salon. I'm not sure how they will do that. Maybe if she is sent in for a wellness visit. I do know from what a lot of members have posted here in the past is that you have to give the AG hospital specific instructions for what you want done. Pin or tape notes to your doll and her box explaining what you want done. Asking them to call you before they touch your doll is a good idea too.
I would never send any of my older dolls in for a head replacement unless their head got crushed or something. If I did, it would just be for an eye replacement.

Thanks for the link, that's fascinating! I'm so glad to hear that they just replace eyes, just in case this happens to my Molly. It's funny that they replace eyes and not wigs, but I'm glad they do the one.
