probably all seen 'em before, but these are sooooo infectious - love him or leave him...the man's such a ham!!!!

Ohhh Bernard. I love the man. He always puts a big smile on my face. I don't think I know of any drummer that can have as much fun playing a simple 16th note groove as him. What can I say...Bernard is amazing. The "singing the blues clip" is fantastic.

Here's an excerpt from Max Weinberg's book "The Big Beat" where he interviewed Bernard Purdie:

MW: You played on the Beatles' tracks?
BP: Twenty-one of them.
MW: Do you remember which ones?
BP: Ummmhmmm.
MW: Which ones?
BP: That's information I don't disclose.
MW: Why won't you name the tracks?
BP: Because, if I need that information to get me some money, then I'll
have what's necessary. I also played on songs by the Animals, the
Monkees--
MW: Everyone knows the Monkees were a fabricated band, but the Beatles--
BP: Ringo never played on anything
MW: Ringo never played on anything?
BP: Not the early Beatles stuff.

Yes, I heard about that from a drum teacher I had in the 80's. He was at a Purdie clinic in Florida and that topic came up. I was surprised and obviously I never forgot about that story. I'm not a Beatles fan, but I am a fan of Bernard Purdie - love the groove on Babylon Sisters from Steely Dan!

I love "Pretty" Purdie, I think that he's a pure groove master !!!

I think that if he says that he did some sessions for the Fab Four, I believe it.
But he gets a lot $$$$$$ for keeping his mouth shut, but he can't... I suppose that his ego is too big...
And maybe that the way he says that he did it is not very respectful for the great Ringo (or even for The Beatles) who is for me the only one Fab Four drummer even if Purdie did some sessions for them so.

Just my opinon.

Forgot to mention the song Rock Steady from Aretha Franklin with Purdie [img]tongue.gif[/img] that's some serious groove playing.

I think both Ringo and Purdie have won one's spurs in their style of playing and someone would have noticed the difference if the story is right. [img]confused.gif[/img]

In his clinic he said that fir that recording, there was originally no drum break, but Aretha speced out and forgot the next section, but bernard stepped in with that groove - they liked it so they kept it.

I dont think purdie drinks. i offered to buy him a drink after a set he played at a small jazz club. he looked at me like i had three heads. i dont think hes a drinker. just naturally......er, eccentric.

Purdie isn't a drinker. Atleast not in these videos. He's just a very upbeat/positive/benevolent person that obviously has a love for drums and music.

I first heard Purdie talk about filling in for Ringo almost 30 years ago in his one and, until a few years ago, only MD cover story. And haven't heard about it since. I'm betting he wished he'd never uttered those few words.

Personally I feel that Bernard, Carmine, Cobham and Palmer (Carl not Earl) were ousted from the pages of MD for those cocky interviews they gave in the first three or four years of the rag. I'm finally going to let my subscription lapse even though I have a complete collection to date (29 years.) Who needs MD when you've got HOD?
