the vamp that Tain solos over just sticks in your head after listening to it.

I think I could solo over that for about 3 months straight. Just now digging into what tain was doing on that tune, very deep shit, very deep. Damn, that guy is so solid.

What he does is sort of what a magician or a good comedian, storyteller, does in that he sets things up, you don't quite know where he's going with them, then he explores it a bit then pulls it together for the resolution.

Didn't Harry Anderson, the Night Court guy, used to be a magician, comedian that did that kind of stuff really well?

I can't tihnk of any other comedians off the top of my head that set things up like that and kept the audience hoping for more. Maybe Andy Kaufman...

Of course, Tony did that all the time.

This is classic Tain, at his best.

I'm listening to it and it's affecting me like the first time I heard the guy, in 1985-6 playing with Wynton on a WM standards recording. Saw him play with WM at Hartwood Acres in PGH back then, was just traumatizing. LOL

He gives me the frickin giggles. Jeezis.

I think he must listen to metal, he uses some seriously aggressive phrasing sometimes.

Whew...just listened to the best solo I've ever heard.

I'm at 78% DL now. I must admit that I am just getting into Tain recently - could you guys recommend any live shows or albums in particular that are a great example of his overall playing?

Also, pick up the Standards discs by WM, there is tons of great stuff there, bascially, anything WM with tain is worth the money.

This inspired me to throw that Branford DVD in.

He is one of the great jazz drummers out there.
I love the impaler because of that clave in 7. Hass has is on his site as well. It's sick.
For sheer phrasing and musicallity however, I must admit, my favorite is Bill Stewart. Tain just plays too much that doesn't have to do with the song. It seems loud and bombastic at times. A bit unmusical. Bill Stewart is musically flawless.
