thought I had a white body Samanta (update)

I won an auction last week for a Samantha doll that was described as 18" White body Samantha doll dressed in her authentic Meet outfit. I won her for $79 and shipping was $12 - she was due to arrived today by UPS ... but when she got her she is just a regular Samantha - her dress is tagged Made in China and I don't know if she is even premattel. She has a tan body. I was so disapointed. I emailed the seller and she said by white body she meant the hands and legs.

I have asked for a refund (she says in her auction that returns are accepted), but she says I have no grounds for a refund. I told her that most people bidding on the auction where probably under the same impression as I was - I will see what she says about a refund. I hate to do a paypal dispute as goods not as described, but I might have to.

What do you think - am I being unreasable. I am not asking for the shipping to be refunded but I would not have paid a total of $91 for a used regular Samantha doll.

I don't think you are being unreasonable at all. Good luck with everything!

That's horrible! Stick to your guns and demand a refund. You deserve it.

I just got a WB Kirsten and would be SO MAD if this had been the case in my situation. Fortunately mine is 100% authentic.

Thanks guys - she is a newish seller so I don't think she delibertly was trying to mislead, but it is frustrating because she mentioned White Body so prominently it looked like she knew what she was talking about ...

I agree, she was being misleading, and while it sounds like it could have been unintentional (though why you would state she is a white body and not just a white doll I don't know...also wouldn't that be obvious from photos, it's just funny coincidence that her wording was exactly what is used for the oldest dolls), I think that you are right in that the bidding wouldn't have gone as high (and you wouldn't have bid) had people know she was just a used Samantha that you can order new by calling a 1-800 number. Good Luck!

Totally misleading! And to say the legs and arms are white, come on! I think this seller need to be reported if they don't give a complete refund of everything including the shipping to you and back to them.

The seller must know that a Mattel new doll sells for $87. and how can a used Mattel doll sell the same.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Because ebay is quite screwy. Many times new mattel, nude dolls or slighty used dressed dolls WILL sell for as much or more than retail.

More likely she searched on American Girl Doll, saw the best selling ones listed as white body. Didn't know what that meant, skimmed the auctions, and couldn't see the differance between her's and their's. Just assumed they meant the skin color, and put it in.

Does the doll have a body tag? if not she is pre mattel, if she does have one can you tell me what it says on it? Some pre mattel German Samantha dolls do say Made in Germany in the body tag. Hope this information helps.

OMG...That so happend to me with a Kirsten doll though...
I emailed the seller and she said I could send it back minus the Shipping fee...I wanted all the refund, but she said no...

So, I left a neutral and her reply to my neutral was "seller unhappy with Doll's naked appearance. Creepy."

I could not believe she called me Creepy!!!!! Because I thought I was getting a white body Kirsten and I got a tan one! Any collector knows that is not creepy...Right?

OMG!That is horrible!I hope you get refunded!

I think part of the problem is that terms on eBay are invented by eBayers. I think this may even be the case with the face molds for My Twinns, for example (because I never see them mentioned anywhere else by the names appearing on eBay!). This is one of those terms that is inaccurate and may cause confusion. The dolls are technically not "white body" dolls, they are "white torso" dolls. So someone new to AGs might think the term "white body" refers to the entire doll, including the limbs (which is the first definition in the dictionary for "body"). It is more obscure to use the term "body" to refer to just the torso. It's accurate, but not common.

This isn't your fault at all--I'm just saying this since it *might* be possible for someone to make an honest mistake due to the confusing terminology that AG fans use when explaining the appearance of their older dolls (and I'm one of them! ).

Either way, the seller had no right to list something that way without knowing what s/he was talking about. It's not good for someone to just throw around terms authoritatively without knowing what they mean. You definitely have a right to complain and get your money back!

Definitely get a full refund because she mis-represented the item.

Justbeingme, you are definatly NOT "creepy", I think she was just mad and thought it was a good way to get your goat. Don't pay any attention to it, we all have a right to an accurate desription.

I agree with slovejoy; you are not creepy! It's normal for collectors to talk about dolls in that way and not think anything of it. The person who makes something of it is the person who has a problem, because they're trying to put a different meaning/connection with something that's entirely innocent and just an everyday part of collecting.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">The arms and legs are the doll's limbs, not the doll's body. Furthermore, the limbs aren't white, they are Caucasian skin toned. If they were actually white, it would be a pretty scary looking doll. An accurate description would be a tan body and Caucasian skin toned limbs. It doesn't matter what the seller meant. What matters is what she actually wrote. A seller can't describe a piece of jewelry as solid gold, and then claim she meant the color of the jewelry, not the type of metal it was made of.

Hi Justbeingme. I think you can reply to the seller's feedback reply on Ebay. I'd definately set him or her straight that you're not creepy, you're a collector--and the white-bodied dolls are worth more. I think the seller was totally out of line with that comment. Hope you can clear things up.

And Katie, you have every right to complain. Like Ubarose said, no part of a tan-bodied doll really qualifies as white. Maybe it was a genuine mistake, but she should still honor your request for a full refund. It's not your fault she didn't know what she was talking about.

- Becca

I agree!!!!! That is awful!!! And even if she didn't know, she knows now and should give you a full refund!!!!!!!

Well - she finally agreed to refund me. I just pointed out that if she did a search for White Body Samantha she would see that it was a particular type of doll and that her description (even if unintentual) was misleading and I would file with Paypal if she didn't refund.

I am shipping Sam back today - she is really pretty, but not $91 worth KWIM!

Thanks for the input ladies ... Katie

This is a stupid question, but what does kwim mean??? Thanks!!!

cassieandnicolesmom

kwim...Know what I mean?

Warmly,

trvnbrn

Oh, I feel so stupid now!!!! LOL!!!!!! Thanks!!!

Sounds like a good "buyer beware" reminder to ask the seller if the body is white cloth or tan/flesh color if the picture doesn't show it.

Glad that she gave you the refund

I'm glad she is going to refund you your money!Maybe it can go to a real WB Samantha!
