Steve Holmes - The Blushda

Hey steve,
I did a quick search but didn't come up with anything regarding whether you might have done a HOD instructional video showing the blushda. I just watched 'scatter' again( which is awesome playing) and noticed you use the blushda to great effect in your solos.
If you haven't already done one, is there a chance you could possibly do a video (like you did the weckl 'nine' video for HOD) and demonstrate to some of us a few ways to incorporate it? I've forgotten what the sticking is anyway but I remember it being a little tricky to get up to speed on it. If you do one, could you break it down real slow and build it? Thanks! Yeah, I seem to have left my brain in my stickbag today. I usually check harder for things before posting. This was the first steve holmes video I ever watched DOH! Anyway, it's great to see it again. Christ knows how long it'll take to get that speed. It's the extra 'RR' which makes it feel awkward. But then, its the RR that makes the blushda [img]tongue.gif[/img]

Thanks to that video, I have the blushda up to speed now and part of my everyday drum vocab on and off the kit [img]smile.gif[/img] (Thanks Steve!)

I stumbled across this thread, and I thought I would also like to give a BIG THANKS to Steve. Thanks man!! May the blushda live on forever! [img]tongue.gif[/img]

Blushdas rule! I stole a bastardized version of Gregg Bissonette's blushda from his Private Lesson video back in the day. Since he didn't explain it in that video, I had to "fake" it since he executed them at the speed of light. His newest double DVD explains them in great detail. Lo and behold, I was doing them incorrectly (maybe that's why they didn't sound like Tony's? JK). At any rate, it was awesome seeing Steve's demonstration which further solidified that I had been doing them wrong all these years. Truth be told, the blushda brought me to HOD.

I'm not sure if you know it - it isn't clear in your post, but that lick you posted isn't a Blushda.

The Blushda starts with a flam and is followed by a drag. It usually has a sticking of rL rrl in a triplet rhythm. It can also be played lR llr and sounds similar to a flam drag but with a different sticking. Another common variation is to put the flam on the last partial of the triplet like rrl rL or llr lR.

The lick you've offered is a sextuplet pattern phrased as a 9-9-6 grouping. It's a cool lick too.

I was practising very slowly today, thinking, yea this is gonna take ages to get any speed on.
20 minutes later I was suddenly able to play it at around 125-130bpm, one r/l RRL for every 1/4 note. I played the grace note of the flam on the ride, the rest on snare. Then I kind of lost it for a bit but at least I know it's possible. I'll try and record something against a groove and post it. However, I think I might possibly be making the flams a bit too unison sounding. It's easy to get clean, fast flams by themselves, but in the blushda, it's awkward. I'm happy with the progress so far though. I felt like steve holmes for a few minutes today.\o/

I always thought of them as dragged swiss triplets.

I was showing this lick to a few drummer friends and the one with a big drum corp background goes, "Yeah, of course, flam drags!" He then proceeded to whip off the lick in no time. I too, always thought of them as some sort of swiss triplet thing but I guess the correct label would be "flam drag." However, no alternating! Yup, one of the most common rudiments in modern drum corps. [img]wink.gif[/img]

It's not a dragged Swiss Triplet , the sticking is reversed on the flams. A dragged Swiss Triplet can't be played as fast as a non-alternating flam drag (which is correct).

I still think my most favorite use of the blushda that is so over the top crazy you just have to laugh is with modified "Tony" ending:

A google search reveals the Blushda in Russia, and our own Klem (I think) spreading the Blush-Love here (in Dutch?). More Dutch Love here. Some Netherlands Blushda Love also.
They call me a geek on the offical Meshuggah Forums (although someone comes to my defense wich was nice). According to the PlanetX Forum the blushda video is an Osacar contender. The blushda also representing on the Pollution Free Environment For Christian Youth. And of course you're not legit unless you're on the DrummerWorld Forum.

Don't fret Steve, everyone of us who hangs at a drum site is a certified drum geek. You are not alone, my friend.

Can someone post a recording of Tony playing the Blush-da? I'd love to hear it from the source!

Someones, by which i mean steve obviously, has got to.
A sort of shrine, a phrase to unite all drummers, no matter where they live, who they think is rubbish, surely the blushda could bring unity to the drumming galaxy? Use the blushda luke, use the blushda.
