It's from the Dallas Zildjian Day (I was there, but can't remember
the year for sure- either 83 or 84(?)

This is on that ebay compilation DVD that was out a while ago. It's an older Zildjian Day.
Anyone know what he's demonstrating? It looks like someone asked him about a groove on a particuliar song. I'd love to know if it's like some Zappa thing I've overlooked.
GroovePig, yeah I believe that's an old Chaka Khan groove from "I Feel For You".
Did Vinnie even play on that song/album?! I remember it sounding like a drum machine on the album... although I last heard that when I was like 12. It's got to be one of the cheesiest songs EVER... I can't stand those harmonica leads. Funky-assed groove though. (y)

If I recall correctly, he's demonstrating some of the Gary Chaffee coordination stuff that he used to work on back at Berklee... I could be wrong though, it's been a long time since I've seen this one...

That Chaka Khan disc is a mixture of live drums and machine.listen closely.
Chaffee's Linear Time book is a good book on linear playing, but alot of this coordination would probably come more from a book like Gary Chester's New Breed, since a lot of it is ostinato-based.

This particular groove is not really a linear groove, but ost-based, like V said. "Linear" is when the limbs do not fall together on their seperate notes in the pattern, IOWs, no [2, or more] limbs are striking at the same time/place.
Sometimes a groove can be predominantly but not necessarily entirely linear, that is, the R & LH, & BDf are playing linearly, but the LF/HH might not be - it might be playing on some of the same notes as the other limbs. [I guess at that point one could also say it's indeed not "linear" after all, then! Case in point would be some of Garibaldi's of TOP killer grooves...

As far as chaffee's material goes, dont forget that the 'time playing' volume of his patterns series of books deals mostly with ostinato type time playing, i believe he produced that book before he brought out the linear time playing book. Although in the patterns book, there is a section on linear time, and he talks about using stickings for time playing in most of his other materials, which most people talk about as being a linear way of playing.
The 'time playing' patterns book is the pink one, nice one gary, and is well cool. Friends and i often commented that even being able to play all of the chapin book, john riley books and at the time some of alan dawsons approaches, you could still get stuck on excersize 2 of gary chaffee's jazz time stuff. I think thats probably true of running new breed then going into chaffee rock time stuff, theres going to be something...

OK...I might be the only freak on here that loves that song....brings back great memories and the Prince original version KILLS the Chaka version.....by the way...he originally wrote it for Patrice Rushen, but she turned it down......don't you want to just put on some parachute pants right now?

Steve Ferrone is listed in the credits on the Chaka Khan CD liner notes. Perhaps, there is a mistake in the liner notes for the song "I Feel For You". [img]confused.gif[/img]

Actually, I think the tune Vinnie is playing in the clip isn't "I Feel For You"" but is actually "Ain't Nobody". "I Feel For You" has a slower tempo and the groove doesn't fit what Vinnie's playing. "Ain't Nobody" would fit easily with what he's playing.
JR's video has a demonstration of "Ain't Nobody", which as cjbdrm mentioned was overdubbed and compiled into one track. It was recorded in three passes, first kick and snare, then hi-hat and finally toms and crashes. It was recorded this way for better isolation between instruments. Incidentally, Vinnie's groove in this clip differs noticeably from what J.R. Robinson demonstrates on his video. J.R.'s part is more consistent than what Vinnie plays, which changes from bar to bar.

well, I can see why Vdrummer thinks it might be 'ain't nobody' because the overall groove is similar, mostly because of the '1 e' on the bass drum each bar and the 1/16th feel. But ain't nobody is slower anyway and JR played 1/16ths on the hats rather than ghosting between snare and hats.

I had to play Ain't Nobody every night for 2 weeks last year for a Christmas show and it's SO HARD to get together and make groove.
Yes Rudy, the "1 e" "ah 1 e" and "& ah 1 e" that Vinnie plays is very similiar to J.R.'s constant "ah 1 e". The rest of Vinnie's groove from the BD pattern, the 1 &ah HH groove and SD ghosting is all different but very cool all the same. None of these grooves would fit the other tune at all, but would fit "Ain't Nobody". It could be another tune entirely, but I'm thinking it's this song. It's one of those classic grooves, like Rosanna, Late In The Evening, etc., and worth learning both drummer's versions of it.
Hey Rodge, in the J.R. Video he does play the entire pattern all at once with a couple of variations, after he demonstrates how he recorded it. You're right, he's a great, grooving drummer. He also demonstrates several of his famous grooves from the 80's that are really great. It doesn't really surprise me that Vinnie might play the groove faster, especially at a clinic.

i remember J.R. going over the parts for 'aint nobody' at a clinic out here in so-cal a few years back. i'm pretty sure he did that track. great drum part. it was mind bending how he had such independance. originally i thought the hats and kick were seperately overdubbed but it wasn't.
as for vinnie, i do remember him playing (air drumming) that song along with chaka on a show called 'solid gold' back in the eighties. perhaps that's why we all thought he played it?

Hey Da Chooch, you must not have read my post a little above this one. On JR's Video he describes how he overdubbed the track in 3 passes for the record. He plays it all at once on the video too.
'Tell me Something Good' is another cool track by JR. The live version(only one I know) drags in parts....is that JR? I think I saw him playing along to it during a clinic from a vid on this forum...he had to adjust to his own timing...lol
Love that track as well though.
