Pot Handle

I noticed that the single pot on ebay right now includes a pot handle. I'm investigating whether a machinist friend of mine could make them for all of us who need one at a reasonable cost. Since I don't own one, can everyone or anyone give me input as to how they work, do they have to be this exact shape, would you be interested in purchasing a non-authentic handle, what would be a reasonable price?

I've got one, I could photograph it from various angles with a ruler in the picture. Any competent draftsman could produce a mechanical drawing from that which a machinist could use to fabricate as many as needed. I'd want to see them stamped REPLICA or something though so we can tell them from the real thing.

Regarding the handle for the pots....it's nice to have but not necessary. I have one and always seem to put it in a place that I can't get to it when I need it so I use tongs. Tongs can slip right underneath the top handle and you can lift the pot out without a problem.

Hi all you stove gurus.

I'm curious about something.

The triples pots all seem to have handle attachment sites. My double pots, however, have no place to attach one of these handles, although I seem to remember seeing a set that did have a bracket on an auction recently. Mine have Chambers stamped in the bottom, so I know they're not aftermarket pots.

Are the pot lifters really necessary? Since I'll have to pick up the single and double pots I have with an oven mitt, why would it be any harder to lift out the smaller triple kettles?

Haven't gotten my hands on a triple yet, so what am I missing here?

Hi All, My double pots have handles on the lids and the little bracket on the side for the insert handle. An repro of the lifter would be great and as Todd said, it should be noted as not authentic. I don't have a Thermobaker yet but have been baking on a plate on top of an over turned stainless steel bowl. Simple muffins, biscuits, cookies and **** turn out beautifully.

I guess the word that got *'d out was b-u-n-s? This censorship is slightly annoying.

I think the censorship is kinda funny myself. It always gives me pause to try to figure out what was blipped out, and when I see what it was, it's been really hilarious. B-u-n-s !!! Ha!!

A few weeks ago one of the 'Board members followed up with "I wasn't cussing, honest" - that still makes me smile. :-)

Chipper, I didn't even know it until you pointed it out, but my single and double pots don't have the side handle place either!! And those pots came with the stove, purchased in 1946, and are stamped "Chambers Shelbyville, Indiana" on the bottom too. However, my triples have the side handle. So I guess they had 'em with the side handle, and without. Thanks for pointing that out - I had never even noticed.

Sign me up for the pot handle. But have you seen Tura's WAYCOOL oversized handle for the broiler pan? Now that's hot. Duplicate that!

I'd be happy to have a duplicate as well.

Hi Robert, Peter, and Warren;
You were the few who said they would be interested in a pot handle. I talked with my friend and he said we'd probably need about 10 to make it at a reasonable cost. But, I am going to take one of my pots down to show him sometime (he lives about 1.5 hours away in NM) and give him a better idea. One question though is do you care if it is a "replica" (trying to make it look like the original - stamped "FAKE" of course) OR do you just want something that functions for removing pots from the thermowell? For me, function is what I care about.
Now, who would be interested in a "broiler platter lifter"? (If Tura would share pics of hers.) And do you care if it's authentic looking or just functional?

I was thinking of finding a local guy, too, to see if the broiler lift could be duplicated, but it would be helpful if your friend could give his opinion since I don't know what resources I'll find here locally. Here's a link to a picture of the broiler handle:

I care about getting the pots out of the Thermowell...a "FAKE" stamp is fine, anyting really that makes it easier to use would be fine...and what is this about the broiler plate lifter ???

I would be interested in a replica, although I don't even own a triple yet! I think that printing the year 2005 (or '06) would be enough to show it is a reproduction, without it actually having to say "replica" or "fake."

I did get my paws on the small single pot insert that attaches to the lid. It has a slot that I can use the handle for, if nothing else. It's kind of spiffy the way it snaps on to the lid. I'd love to get the shallow insert, but my pot doesn't have the indentations on the sides to hold the insert, so I'd need to buy a whole different pot.

Does anyone's single pot have an attachment site for the handle? It seems like it would be too heavy when full for the handle to be useable.

So now that we know that there were at least two models produced of each the single and double pots (with and w/o handle sites), how about the rest? I do know that there were also 2 models of Thermobaker made. I don't know the difference, but the guy I bought mine from said he had two different models on hand.

Maybe in the virtual stove convention, we could expand on RobbiQuest's (t's) accessories gallery with photos of the different pot/t-baker editions?

OK Berlyn; I'll put you down for a possible two. I will visit my friend with an actual pot or two and a pic of the handle and see what he can do. My emphasis will be function and reasonable cost.

Can those who have pots and a handle clarify the use of the handle? Is it just meant to hook onto the side handle attachment of the triple pots OR does it also work to pull the double and single pots out by the handles on the top of the lids?

OK in regards to the pots with a place to hold or store your pot handle/lifter on the outside of the pot. (Before I lost mine it worked nicely to lift the pot/s in and out of the T-well. Tongs or a pot holder works fine too.)
I looked at 1 of 3 pot set that came with my 1939 14-B and yes there is a place to "hang your handle" on the outside. On the other 2 ( I got from E-bay) which seems to have been made after 1939, no place to "hang your handle". On my 7qt, no place either.

I have a place on my triples for a handle to slide in. I use a pot holder to lift out with top handle,carefully levering the grip because one of each clamp doesn't fit snugly.
I,too, would be interested in a handle for the side to lift the pot out...V

interesting thread,
the original hndles were machine stamped. ie tool and die. they could be duplicated by machining but i think the cost would be prohibitive. at least it would be in my shop.
all you need is someone to supply an original, on loan, to cast a die from. then hot press an appropriate metal, say 6010 aluminum, to shape.
a single piece w/b expensive but a "production run" would make each piece relatively cheap.
i can cast the dies and make the parts if you send me the originals to pattern.
**** , ill do it for fun. materials plus shipping if theres enough interest.

What a generous offer. You will probably be less expensive than my friend, since he would want a little something for his time.
The names I have so far for the pot handle are:
Me, Robert, Peter, Warren, Berlyn (x2), Chipper, Debbie, and Vicki.
Is that enough to make it worth while? Can you give us a ballpark cost estimate?
Also, I don't know who would be interested in the broiler lifter.

I'm in on the pot handle, but I'm really interested the most in the broiler handle. Count me in on a broiler handle too please. I'm waiting until the price of the pots go down, and I'm going to hop over to Indiana come spring and start checking out the flea markets and antique shops.

A broiler handle??? I've never heard of that accessory. Can someone explain more????

I have Mom looking at flea markets, estate sales, garage sales, Goodwill, Salvation Army,
etc... for any and all Chambers accessories. She's retired & recently widowed, so that gives her something to occupy her time. She grew up with a Chambers too!! If she does come across any pots or pots sets, I want to be able to offer them to the members of this board and not E-bay. So far no luck, but we still have our eyes opened for them. Along with yellow panels too!!
I feel we on this board have a love & passion for anything & everything Chambers and I want to "keep the spirit going" and not make a quick buck. My Big Bertha was a freebie and I just love cooking on her so much and want to share!!

Just checked our pots and found that niether the 2 double boilers nor the 2 pot set have the side hooks for the handle. What's more, I dropped one in the Tw and found that the potlifter handle doesn't reach to where the side hook would have been! Too short, and with the angle of hte handle it doesn't want to slide in between the pot and the side of the Tw. I'll just keep hooking the handle on the lid with it.

I'd be interested in the broiler platter lifter for sure. I use the broiler more than the Tw anyway.

I have a couple of pages of accessories in the back of my service manual (crummy xeroxs) that has the "Broiler Platter Lifter. part No. 195. Lightweight, sturdy aluminum handle grip especially designed to lift hot broiler platter from range. Other end of handle is designed to hook onto oven rack for pulling out rack without use of pads. Fits Broiler platter of all recent Chambers range models."

New Ch. Guy is right, the side brackets on the pots aren't made to lift the pots in/out of the Thermowell. They are there to use the handle like a regular sauce pan handle when doing stove top cooking. Then the handle can be used to lift/lower the pots into the well using the bracket/handle on the lids. If your clips have a tight fit, the handles are strong enough even with a full soup pot. I've also found the handle to be useful for gently prying the lid off a pot when it is well sealed after cooking.

I wrote to tplumeri and asked if he would be interested (for a cost) in duplicating my broiler handle. He made mention in a previous post that he had the skill and tools to do so. I wanted to pay him to do it so that there would be plenty available for future members too. But, I haven't heard from him. My guess is that the oak tree that crashed into his house has him off-line for a while.

Guess what I found doing my New Years cleaning.
My T-well pot handle. So change me back to just one.
I would love to have the broiler platter lift handle!!
