I agree it's one of Weckl's top recorded performances. He plays technically, but loose...I have 2 versions BTW, an edited and un-edited.
whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa.
TWO versions?
Make it happen dude.
yeah.... like steve said.
WHOAAAA!!!
Mama Chola is Weckl?s best solo period!!! I can?t think of any other of his solos on record that can touch that one. It?s beyond special. I love how the whole solo is phrased from start to finish!!! Syncopation at it?s best!!!! There is no hand / foot crazy display of chops, just flat out brilliant phrasing. That is how all drummers should play a solo. Phrasing is a lost art in drumming now. Vinnie can phrase in a world that only he can. It?s always the begging of solos with Dave and Vin that are so interesting before they start blowing jizz all over their kits.
Great.
Where's the mp3s!?!?!?
I have a DJ version that has shorter songs, same ones, just edited down....so if you already have the regular release I dont think I have anything different...Love that cartoon artwork on the cover of that one!
I emailed you guys (Lee and Chris W) mp3's of the song, let me know if you got them. They're 12mb, so I'm hoping they weren't too big.
Peace, Sammy J
I would like to hear it, too!
Thanks Donu, I've never put files up for down load before. Heres the link

That was an amazing track. When was it recorded??
Chris,
It was recorded in 89, which would make weckl 28
Very nice. thanks soooo much!!
Wow that is beautiful...That solo is 17/8!
Yeah, this is the shit. 17/8 (or more 8 and a half/4)!
Why is it that this early weckl stuff is the stuff i really like to listen to, but his playing style is really hard to watch? Now his playing style is beautiful, but Multiplicity is unbearable for more than 5 minutes IMO.
I think the cool thing about this solo is that it isn't obviously in an odd time - it's a rare skill to play in an odd time like that and make it subtle and not overpowering. Sometimes it can be far too obvious and disjointed (you only have to listen to bands like Spastic Ink, Spiral Architect, Dream Theater to see how odd times can be used badly).
The guitar solo in the middle (4/4 6/8 kind of feel) really opened my ears up to some cool stickings that applicable to all kinds of ideas.
16th note trips, with R l l R l l (cont) with the right hand alternating between ride and X-Hat, and left hand on the Hi Hat, all within a groove.
Khan himself talks about how he loves that drum solo, and how Anthony and Dave did the session for little or no money here:

Pretty amazing stuff all around.
Nice...
On the topic of fave Weck solos...here's mine. This is my first time uploading so let me know if it doesn't work.
The track is from '86 so he's even younger--the music (Special EFX's Formal Invitation from "Slice of Life") is a bit, well, a bit "fuzak" but the solo's pure juice IMO, and the outro is a groove duo is cool.

peace & happy holidays--S.O.
Nice track there SO. Just the way he plays the hihat is SOOO outragously wecklish (know what i mean?). The bongo player's having a good time! Christ, thats one fretless bass and a half.
I reckon this was still in his "play like Gadd" mode in his younger years - there's quite a few Gaddish grooves (there's a sambaish thing thats almost identical to the one at the end of Aja).
The solo bits are wicked as well.
Don't know Steve, but I can never get to much of the bass slide coming out of the drum solo. Anthony is the man...

Yeah, Eyewitness, Weckl at his best. This and Bill Connors' Step It. Back when Weck had his own sound with those 8" and 10" toms. It's refreshing to hear him on some decent tunes for a change.
I heard that Special EFX tune on the radio like a year ago, I was flipping channels in my car and I thought I heard a ride cymbal bell and toms (a rarity for radio these days) and I flipped back and thought this has to be Weckl. Sure enough the solo removed all doubt.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Amen to that.Quote:

This was some time ago, but I remember Wek commenting that he felt the Eyewitness album as some of his best recorded work. Too bad there aren't any live recordings of him with the Brecker Brothers when he subbed for Chambers on some dates. The Chicagoland show was nothing short of brilliant.
If nobody minds, I'll just disagree with that. Ok? Ok.
wow awesome track!!!
Thanks for posting this! I gotta pick this cd up
Dave Weckl/Chuck Loeb/Andy Laverne

I would of loved to see him at home in Chicago espically in the late 80's/early 90's. I just saw him a couple months ago in Spring field (IL) and had him sign my copy of Public Access, he looked at it kinda weird and chuckled almost like he didn't remeber recording it. But I seriously doubt that.
PS Everyone keeps talkin about Mama Chola which is def a cool tune but what about track 3 Kamarica, good shit on there too.

Dude hey, what about the solo on the second to last tune off of ?Double Feature? Special EFX. Man Dave just kills it. The percussionist added just enough stuff on that tune to make Dave sound perfect.
Dave also played some nice solos on Andy Laverne ?Pleasure Seekers?. That gig Dave did when he first moved out to LA for good. Also Andy Laverne and Chuck Loeb did a CD and Dave was on it. The drums sound like crap but the playing is great. Early Dave at his best. I could go on an on.
mkabal, didn't you see Weck with Eyewitness at the MD fest in the 80's? I wonder if there's recordings of that show.
There IS a boot floating around (audio) of Weck with Steve Kahn and Anthony Jackson . There's a 6/8 tune that really opened my ears to playing 3/4 against 6/8 (as opposed to 4/4 which is what I was naturally feeling against the 6). Amazing how one tune can open huge doors to rhythmic ideas that you can apply to almost any tune.
I find that feeling mulitple times (or feels) at the same time is an abilty that I value. If I do another video I'm going to talk about that I think. Knowing where the real quarter note is while switching feels can result in some cool musical moments amongst musicians that can do that kind of thing without getting lost. Funny, just as I thought I was getting good at it the guitar player in Altered (Jeff Miley) will play a line in a solo that I latch on to, then I'm looking for one again. Ugh.
Oh well, all part of the musical journey.
Merry Christmas everyone (from my sisters computer while she puts gifts under the tree for my two nieces). Thank God she got high speed internet this year.
Have a good holiday steve!
