I Remember...

The First Television set my parents got.
They bought it from a local furnature dealer, who delivered and set it up one afternoon. I think it was spring or early summer of 1961.

The installed an antenna pole (about 12 feet in the air), ran the wire through the window and connected it to the Tv set. It came with a small stand with wheels (an early entertainment center).

I remember when they turned it on, there was a cowboy show on, My sister & I was so excited. Where we lived at back then, we could only pick up about 3 channels, and someone (usually my brother) had to stand on the porch and slowly rotate the antenna pole until the picture would come in clear enough to see.

My first Deanna Daredevil doll with motorcycle that you wind up and then press a release button and she goes. My brother had the Evil Knievel one, but mine was better. I chopped her hair off so as to not look like a Barbie doll, which I loathed. I got her back in Christmas of 1977. I was obsessed with it. I remember thinking Finall??toy for girls that isn't girly.

I remember when I was about 8, a neighbor lady gave me a blanket, it was blue with white & red ships on it. I had it for years before it just kinda fell apart, ain't that a strange thing to remember? [img]graemlins/wonder.gif[/img]

My Mrs Beasley Doll that I got for Christmas in 1970...I loved her so much then one day while I was outside having a tea party with her, my Momma called me inside to eat dinner (ALWAYS GOT EXCITED ABOUT EATING)so I ran in had dinner and then a bath. During that time a cold front game through and it started sleeting and freezing. When it was time for bed I couldn't find Mrs. Beasley ( cause I had left her outside) and when my Daddy brought her in she was frozen solid and so cold...I pulled her string and she said something like the teacher off of Peanuts...then my Momma told me I killed her WAH!!!!!!! Oh ROGER!!! You are to kind to me!!! You just managed to make me feel 4 years old again!!! My Mom has actually looked into purchasing a Mrs. Beasley for me BUT thought 75$ was too steep, since I'd prolly kill her again LOL!!! That story is still a running punchline in my family!!!

...The first toy I got for Christmas. I must have been about 5, and I got a wind up bull dozer that ran on rubber treads, I couldn't wait until it was warm enough to take it outside and play in the dirt.

I hadn't thought about that in forever until you started talking about Mrs Beasley

Off Topic, but I have a friend back in California and when they started looking for a name of the band, some one came up with "The Beasley's" as a tribute to Buffy's Companion

I remember the first time I got in trouble in school.

It was in Mrs Grants 3rd grade class. It was during a spelling test. She had promised us that if everyone passed the test, she would take us up the street to the Hilltop Drive in. I was a terrible speller so I found the sheet she was going to work from, and copied the answers.

As she called out the words we would write them down, I got cocky and started writing down the words before she called them.

I was writing intently when I realised, that she was standing behind me and she noticed that I was about three words ahead.

I got three raps across my knuckles and no one got ice cream, boy were they mad.

The next week, everyone passed and we got our cones. [img]redface.gif[/img]

One of my first memories is of my great grandmother
holding me and swinging on the porch swing....
I can remember my fingers touching her necklace which was a big
heart....my mom is amazed I can remember that.....
because my great grandmother passed
away before I was 2 years old and when I told
my grandmother when I was 12 that I remembered
that necklace, she gave it to me!

I was born in Alabama, but moved to Illinois as an infant, So I don't remember most of my family, on my Moms side except for one happy memory.

We took a trip down to Gadston in about '65 or '66, I thought it was quite an adventure. They made us pallets of quilts on the living room floor, and I remember my Aunt getting up before the sun and I woke up and she Shh'ed me and told me to go back to sleep.

I woke up a little later by the smells from the kitchen. I got up as she was pulling out Homemade biscuits the size of saucers. She took my hand and we walked into the back yard and picked big ol' red tomatoes for breakfast.

I think that was the best meal I ever had. Big biscuit, with a slab of fried pork back, a slice of ripe tomato & a slice of melted cheddar cheese.

I like to eat, but that breakfast will always be in my memory.

I remember... record shopping, I started buying Lp albums in about 68 or 69, I was about 11 or 12 and I would go to the local Ben Franklin five & Dime and look through thier lps. They had one rack with about 25-30 lps. The records cost about $2.99. I would go and look every week but I only remember buying one from them, It was Janis Joplin- Live in concert, it was a double lp and it cost $5.99.

I then discovered a furniture store that sold Record players & replacement needles and they had a rack of Budget lps and Cutouts, starting at 79c.

I bought a lot of stuff from them. I remember getting Otis Redding, Lighting Hopkins , and a lot of early blues & country lps.

Over the years I collected about 9,000 lps. Over the years & the hard times I had to sell off a few and I believe I have about 3,200 still stored at my Mom's house

My Hubby has tons of Lp's...I recently asked him if we could sell em and.............Okay I should have known better than to ask!!! I can only imagine how much money he has tied up in those things!!!
My Hubby is a pack rat aND has many different collections!!! Lord knows if we ever needed alot of money would could sell some of it off. he has signed rookie cards, football, baseball, hockey etc!
It is amazing hearing the stories behind each and I believe that is WHY its so hard for him to part with!!!

I remember... My first stereo, I had to mow yards
for the whole summer of 68 to save up $84. I took my money and went to York's Discount store in my home town.

I bought a Craig stereo, with Am/Fm radio, Turntable, and 8-track tape player/recorder. It was on sale for $79.99, and the store manager threw in a blank 8-track tape for me.

Yes!!! I remember begging for a radio whne I was in the 4th grade and Mom got me one at Radio Shack. A nice blue am/fm transistor radio w/ ear plugs. I would take it school and at recess go outside and sit in a far off corner, under a huge elm, listening to my music and watching the autumn leaves fall all around me!!!

I remember... My first radio I bought when I was about 8-9 years old. My step dad & I went to an estate sale on a weekend afternoon. My step dad liked going and hanging out with the other men in the back, swapping stories.
The first items were small house hold items, I saw them placing items on the table for bid & I saw this cream colored table radio, I asked my step dad if I could get it & he said if I could get it for $3 or less I could, they started the bidding at $1 but someone bid 50c, I bid a dollar, they bid $1.50, I bid $2 they bid $2.25, and I raised my hand and said $2.50....going once going twice, sold to the boy in the front row.

It was my pride & joy, it was an ugly cream color with a large dial that looked like a speedometer, but it lit up at night. It had a 4 1/2 inch speaker. when you turned it on it took about a minute for the tubes to heat up.

It had two screws on the back for an antenna, I didn't have an antenna so I ran an old extension cord out the window and tied it to a limb of the apple tree outside my window.

I could get KXOK out of St. Louis most days, they were top 40, I remember hearing the Beatles, Paul Revere, the Monkees.

I think the highlight was if it was a clear night, I could pull WLS from Chicago. It was full of static, but I remember hearing The Doors, Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin, Bob Dylan and all of this magic music that I would read about in Hit Parader magazines.

It made me feel special

As I was re-reading my previous post about the radio, it reminded me of another memory.

I Remember when the Beatles played in St Louis in 1964, It was sponcered by KXOK who put out a booklet of photos & quotes from the fab four (which I still have some where).

My big brother went to the concert, I think It cost him $4.00 for tickets. He wasn't very impressed, He said they wiggled all over the stage and you couldn't hear or understand the music because of the screaming.

Why couldn't it have been me?

I remember helping to build the House, I grew up in.
It was the spring of 1961, My stepfather had been salvaging lumber from old houses & barns for about two years. He bought a small lot on a dead end street and started builing the simple frame house. I collected used nails from the old lumber into coffee cans and I helped haul bricks from a neighbors driveway in my little (rusty) red wagon for the fire place. I thought I was a big shot.

I bet you were a big shot!!! I think its sooo sweet!!! I helped my step father add on two new room to our little house. I have some of my best memories from then. We had bamboo growing in the back of the property and I made a fort inside by clearing the growth in the middle. We had 2 pear trees, a pecan tree, grapes and blackberries growing. My neighbor had a walnut tree and peaches...In the summer I never went inside If i got hungry there was always some fresh fruit or nuts and a cool drink outta the hose ...SIGH oh to be 8 again!!!

I remember..my dad going away when I was three..I remember my crib and the shadows that played across my blanket..I remember the smell of bacon frying and fresh perked coffee at my grams house...the sound of the morning train only four blocks away..the sound of "Hartley" mowing the grass with one of those old push mowers...playing subs and bombers off the dock into the lake,I remember beating the hell out of a boy that tried to kiss me in school when I was in third grade...I remember many good and sad things..I'm glad I can remember anything at all..the old stuff is clearer than the newer stuff..

That is so cool Mum...I love hearing stories like these!!!

The first Terri Lees were made in 1946 of composition materials. Composition dolls are marked "TERRI LEE" "PAT. PENDING" in raised letters on their upper backs, and they have the stiff, wiry "mannequin" wig.
Composition Terri Lees in excellent condition are quite rare and are coveted by collectors.

I remember when playgrounds had metal... slides that would give you second degree burns on sunny days, swings with chains able to knock out teeth if you stood to close, teeter-totters that could snap your finger off if caughtjust the right way, merry-go-rounds that wobbled as the spun making the thought of getting caught underneath it all the more terrifying....ahhhhhhhhh what happen to the good old days??? I remember sitting in front of a lamp on rainy days, staring at the film strips through my View Master. I remember having a couple reels of dinosaurs and thinking how real they looked. I also had reels of TV shows and reels from Disney movies. Things were simple back then (or was it just me?)

I loved my View Master when I was kid.

I remember having a crush on the boy who played on the Saturday show HR Puff n Stuff. That was my exposure to an English accent.

I remember Saturday shows being more entertaining. I remember Land of the Lost, Dr. Shrinker, Sigmund the Sea Monster, and of course Josie & the Pussycats!

my terri Lee doll had a brownie or a girlscout uniform on, and I also had her baby brother that came in a cradle and a "tree swing"....when my gram died..my mean ole aunt gave all my stuff away..and wouldn't tell me where it went..I was so sad...I had so many childhood memories in my blue trunk-toy box...bad aunt bad bad...oh well there is one in every family right??

THanks for the pictures! LOL. I thought Wil was pretty hot too. I had a thing for The Six Million Dollar man, and wanted to actually BE the Bionic Woman. I used to run through the yard and while jumping from a tree I would make that sound that you heard when they jusmped real high...and I would try to fall in slow motion....of course I never could manage that too well....I always fell at normal speed.

You know...I actually HAD a Wonder Woman one piece bathingsuit in 4th grade. I loved it! I would put aluminum foil on my wrists and I had gold yarn, and and I would do that spin. You know the spin?

Then my mean, evil sister humiliated me when i wore it to the local town pool. I was going off the diving board and she stated to sing the theme song and everyone turned and laughed at me. Kinda ruined the whole thing for me. I had mom buy me a new suit after that. **shakes head** Just plain ol meanness I tell ya.
