There are many cybercrime issues facing the world today. Identity fraud, denial of service, hacking into national defense networks, etc. A new law however introduces an a who new aspect to cybercrime, one that goes above all the others. That crime is using the Internet to annoy others.

This is going to create a whole of problems for a lot of people. First, with almost 25 million blogs, tons of forums, not to mentions email and other routes, it becomes quite interesting. The applicable text of the law, pulled from CNET, says this:

"Whoever...utilizes any device or software that can be used to originate telecommunications or other types of communications that are transmitted, in whole or in part, by the Internet... without disclosing his identity and with intent to annoy, abuse, threaten, or harass any person...who receives the communications...shall be fined under title 18 or imprisoned not more than two years, or both."

This portion of the bill was tucked into a large Dept. of Justice budget bill in order to slip it in and keep it moving through. Some may argue this could have a chilling effect on several aspects of the first amendment and in all reality, it probably won't hold up.

First, enforceability is going to be a major problem. Each case of annoyance becomes a federal crime. It would be difficult to conceive of the FBI or NSA arresting people every single time they annoyed someone. With millions of bloggers and even more commenters, there is no practical way to enforce this, none. There's just no way to do it.

Then there's the chilling effect part. This could apply to blogs, chat rooms, forums, and even newspaper editorials that took a perhaps snarky side of things. What about pop-up ads, and other emails one find annoying? They could all be included. This law violates the first amendment outright and when it's challenged, and it surely will be, then it'll be struck down swiftly. This law most certainly affects free speech and press, not to mention a number others.

While there are certain individuals who deserve not to be annoyed, this law creates an open-ended route that will halt speech on the Internet and that violates the first amendment. For a whole host of reasons, this is bad law. One can expect it to be challenged soon and then it will come down.

This is all about George W. Bush and the republicans being the CORPORATE PIMPS that they are. Republicans are corprate pimps and this law is aimed at preventing disgruntled consumers and employees from exercising their first amendment rights to criticize big business. Big business, by and through the Republican party have taken over the government, bought it from the citizens, lock, stock and barrel.

And how did they take over the government? With the willing, even joyous unwitting support of Republicans like Benrand, who will stand by his (not mine) fascist President, NO MATTER WHAT THEY DO! The Constitution and the 1st Amendment be damned! Bush already shredded the 4th Amendment warrant requirement.

Benrand, what does Hillary Clinton have to do with the Bush/Republican shredding of the Constitution? Admit it, Benrand, you were wrong to vote for this blistering jackinapes masquerading as the President. And, oh yeah Benrand, Career lawyers at the Department of Justice don't write law.

You forgot about no-bid government contracts - the underlying reason for Bush/Cheney to take the U.S. into war in the first place, the only reason a dolt like Bush has any interest in even being President - war profiteering. It's not heard to figure out. The Bush family has been in the war profiteering/trading with the enemy business for 70 years. (Do some research on the Union Banking Corporation and Fritz Thiessen). So, if contracts are awarded without competative bidding, how does a contract get awarded? To the one willing to pay kickbacks for it, friends and family of Bush and Cheney, that's who.

Does anyone not know the true intent behind this preposterous law? It's to chill annonymous criticism of big business by disgruntled consumers and employees, and annonymous criticism of the government by disgruntled citizens.

Employees are fired and sued by their employers all the time for leaving annonymous, critical statements about their employers, managers, etc. on internet forums. Corporations regularly hire law firms to sue ISP's on false pretenses of ie: trade secrets, to obtain indentifying information on annonymous posters. The practice was so pervasive that a law was previously passed providing for an award attorney's fees to persons sued by giant corporations for wrongly attempting to stifle critical speech by use of the court system.

Now, some corporate pimp slipped an amendment into a large bill, and Bush signed it.

I am what one might label a moderate independent [bit libertarian, AWA liberal AND conservative ideals] middle kind of guy, as i feel taking far sides [extremism] to one side or the other is quite a dangerous practice. There are actually many ideologies on both the demo/lib AWA repub/conserv side that i adhere with, AWA those that i think are absolutely looney-tunes. I strive to try to deal with & weigh philosophies, ideologies, agendas, AWA independent cases on strictly an individual basis before leveling accusations or running with mass gossip on either side of the coin ["he/she said; parties said-"]. Besides, to me, having "two sides" from which to "choose" is just stoopit. Right is right, & that's all there is to it. The problem is, people are confused as to what "right" is. This is why some religions are devided into many subclasses or "churches." [img]graemlins/hmmm.gif[/img] People disagree on their indy interpretation of things. Doctrine can be found to be good or bad, but it will also have groups of tightly-wound people's crazy interpretations.

But I will concur with the assessment that both the labels repub AWA demo were originally quite a bit different than they indicate now...& that there are "a**-chasms" on both sides of the coin muddying the water.

I'll never take anyone elses' ideology w/out first checking into it for myself. Spin [lies] are EVERYWHERE, folks...used by selfish people to promote & push their agendas. On both sides of the coin. It's up to us to study up to be smart enough to identify it.

When I was in London I somehow ended up going to a Strip joint! hahahaha I was with my band and we were playing several clubs there while visiting a friend and recording some tracks.

Anyway, one night we were just chilling and LOndon and I am frikin drunk... esp since the drinking age is lower over there! hahaha. We were walking around to find another place to go, and some chaufer guys pick us up asking if we wanna go to a strip club. Now im 19 at the time so I didnt really have any interest but I needed to pee desparately so I voted for going. We get there, and its like 20 pounds to get int which was stupid because it was like 40 bucks US but I just paid gave them my jacket and went to the bathroom... over the course of the night I went to the bathroom like 10 times there, and I was so drunk out of my mind, i think I tipped the bathroom dude everytime I was there... and by the last time he was so nice to me he gave me like candy and stuf... but thats probably because I tipped him so much... damn the power of alchohol man.... hahahaha. what a waste of money.

Anyway, we get in and like there a buncha naked ladies obviously, and Ive never seen so many naked ladies in one spot at once so Im all like "Wow! Boobies!" nah im just kidding I was so drunk I didnt even care. I just sat down with the band and casualy drank my drinks and finished everyone elses... now I was really fucked up! hahaha

Some chick comes over (a stripper) sits next to me and starts asking me if I wanted a lap dance... having paid 20 bucks in entrance fees and tips for the bathroom dude, i was already low on cash and I wasnt going to waste it on her so I said no thanks. She was persistent and kept bugging me for about 10 mins... and I had no interest at all. so I turned to her and said. "Look, Ive been drinkig all night and Im real super drunk, so if you dont get away from me, Ill probably puke all over you."

she left right away.

Benrand... As a 10th grade high school drop out, I've managed to disassemble your argument quite easily. So much for a Bush style college education. When you mention career lawyers, don't forget to mention that an overwhelming majority of many of repubs in politics have law degrees (same with other politicians). And for my last point.....
Conservatives today in office are nothing like the conservatives I know, who, by the way, are Republicans, and are good middle class working people. In my many interviews with my Conservative customers (there are hundreds), they are disenchanted with this President. They are god believing people that feel that this President hasn't the 1st clue about what being a true Christian is all about. As the many points that Vdrummer noted, the conservatives I know are worried about these same things. Real concerns of REAL everyday people (which represent the overwhelming majority of Americans)..... "lefties", moderates, and logical Republicans. Don't tell me that the drunken spending that this "conservative" congress is that of the Conservative montra. The Repubs in office are fakes and are only interested in one thing. Disassembling our Anti-trust laws so that they can have Corporate rule over us everyday Americans. We saw it with the Railroads in the 1880's, and we're starting to see it now. Pay attention people. The sound you're hearing during the Alito's confirmation hearings are that of a "yes man" to the government. So with John and Sam in the Supreme Court, this administration can complete it's master plan and disassemble dissent. Will you be able to tell your kids where you were when America no longer became America??

Yes... this is a drum forum. But I would bet a dollar that the overwhelming majority of the musical community is in support of what is called "the left".

Last time i went to one was a joint called Fannies in or near Ottawa/Hull[?] w the band i was touring ATT almost 12 yrs ago. The girls there were physically amazing...not a wooden nickel in the bunch [altho there were 5 in ours], playboy bunnies all, & very few phony fakey bought-baloony-boobs/led zeppelins/moonwalk-tent rides in the mix if any at all [img]graemlins/thumbs_up.gif[/img] ...but physical beauty is only skin deep...& psychologically/emotionally/spiritually ugly cuts clear to the bone... [img]wink.gif[/img]
