a few days ago, my boyfriend came home and told me about a visit he had to lordco, where one of the guys was telling him about this water dragon he has..
he got it for his kids, but they're not interested in it..
so after a little bit of bargaining, we went and looked at it today..
she's very small... she looks malnourished and dehydrated and she has sores from being stressed and ramming the cage walls...
but that's nothing that a little bit of love and care can't fix
i couldn't resist, i had to borrow money off jay so that i could get this poor lizard and bring her home..
so she's all set up and she's been sitting on my shoulder for a while, content and happy, i haven't chosen a name for her yet, but i will...
isn't she cuute...

One of the very few lizards I could see myself having. She's so tiny. I can handle lizards and turtles and hermit crabs but not snakes and spiders and bugs...LOL. [img]biggrin.gif[/img]

she eats bugs.. right now she's on tiny crickets and mealworms (terrible for lizards, i know, but it's all i can get her to eat right now )
AND i have to hand feed her because she won't catch her own food... but when she gets bigger, she'll eat roaches, earth worms, super worms and even the occassional pinky (baby mice)
i think tomorrow i'm going to make her a cricket-fruit-gatoraid-appetite stimulating-smoothie LOL she needs to gain a couple ounces *L and grow some..
right now she's so small because she's only just a hatchling, everyone i've talked to has agreed she's about 4 months old... she'll soon be growing rapidly and at full length, if her original tail is still intact, she should be just about 3 feet long.. not too big..
chillz, i've always wanted an iguana except they get SOOOOOOOOOO big,.. a full grown iguana can grow to like 10 feet long and that's just too much...
right now, at least... maybe after a couple more dragons and maybe a beardie or two i'll be ready for an iguana as they require so much special care and attention... not that my dragon doesn't, but iguana's need a special kind of home for them.. *L ..
i wound up having to work all this week ad by the time i'm off, the pet store and everything i can buy anything i need for her is closed, so i'm hoping i can call in late one of these days and pick up a few more things for her, as she needs lots of climby, hidey places, still..
she's having a hard time adjusting but today was the first day i was 'allowed' to handle her without her jumping, so she's warming up slowly... i spend lots of time with her, talking to her and making her feel comfortable, so i hope she drops the attitude *L ..
i've decided to name her Enid

I am talking more the spiders, ants and slugs type bugs. I feed my Betta bloodworms. All he will really eat. [img]eek.gif[/img]

i had a tarantula for a while... she was cool, but too creepy for me...

Nope...freeze dried. My other fish like them too...LOL. Bettas are picky. Sometimes you can get them to eat the pellets, others will eat the frozen ones. Most every one I have had turns its nose up at those and goes for the freeze dried ones. I remember the tarantula. I have a serious fear of spiders and that wouldn't work.

i've never had any luck with bettas *L .
i hand feed my dragon superworms and she loves it!... lol it's cute as hell.. she sits underneath my hand, licking her chops and them BAM>... *L
the tarantula had to go for that reason... i'm seriously creeped out by spiders, not to mention i'm allergic, so the little hairs that she had on her legs to deterr predators, actually deterred me because when they touched my skin they turned to a big ugly swollen rash..
i shouldn't have to wear gloves to handle my pets, so i had to send her packin' *L
she's warming up to me now and i think i could even get away with handling her for a bit (so long as i don't bring my hands out of the cage *L she'll jump)
but she knows who i am.. when i'm coming to turn on the lights, when i'm turning it off, when it's feeding time... she waits for me in our spot *L .. it's cute as hell..
i'm just crazy about my new pet =))))

I says take it, and slam it as hard as ya can against the wall...then take yas fishin hook, cram it up the ass till the barb is pokin out the neck, hit some them great river pics ya post and catch a record winnin somthin or another...

Hubby and I have our salt water aquarium set up but we have to let it run for 6 weeks before we can get a tester fish which is going to be a blue damsel and if that one works out alright for a week we get to get our Lionfish!!! YAY!!! We have to put a lock on the door to the computer room though because Lionfish are extremely poisonous and carry a neurotoxin in the spines and since we have 2 little girls every now and then we are gonna put a lock on top the door that they can't get to. But the Lionfish I want is a really light colored one. She is gorgeous. [img]biggrin.gif[/img]
As for bettas I have found they do best in a fishbowl and they like the water a tad murky. Since they are air breathers you don't have to have a filter or airstone in it.
I am allergic to spiders. If I get bitten by one I have a welt the size of a softball at the bite site. It sucks. I couldn't do a tarantula though...too creepy and I am terrified of small spiders so one that large would probably send me over the edge into a panic attack. [img]eek.gif[/img]

rosie, i've always wanted a salt water aquarium, good luck it, let me know how it works out... someday i'll give it a try when i've got a more stable environment around me.. lol ..
i react the same way to spider bites... if i get one on my arm, my entire arm will swell up... it's lovely *L

*L... i had my alligator lizards on the table out in the living room/kitchen... yes, they're connected by a kitchen table...
and if i wasn't in the room while the cats were out (they spend a lot of time locked in the bathroom because they're jerks...)
i would find them standing on top of the cage, picking at the mesh screen, trying to get in..
they haven't even laid eyes on the new one
i moved the ali to the spare bedroom where i keep my rats.. so all of my 'caged animals' are in the spare bedroom which is a cat free area *L

when my cats were much smaller, we lived in a big house that had mice..
and one day my cat caught a mouse and gave it to the smallest kitten and she took it... and she played with it... threw it up in the air, threw it against the wall, against the washer, bashed it against the floor, smacked it around, snarling at it... until it was a bloody pulp on the floor.. they chase flies around the house and if it's up too high, they'll climb shelves to get to the hightest point and wait until it comes down.. they're insane... i drop a lot of crickets and they catch every single one and eat it
if i didn't have the lizards in that room, i'd be tempted to stick the cats in there with the rats (who'd be in their cage) i've heard a full grown rat can give a cat a good run for his money *L .. one of my cats got a nice chunk taken out of his leg when he tried to get my rat through the bars in the cage...

i'm sure if the lid on that cage wasn't locked down, they would have gotten in there and eaten my poor lizard....
but once the dragon is bigger, they'll have to learn to live with a big lizard in the house...

LMAO...my Dad's Chocolate Lab likes to bring dead rats and mice into the house and drop them at Grandma's feet. Some of them have still been alive enough to twitch. Needless to say we had to get into the habit of checking her mouth before letting her in...LOL. [img]eek.gif[/img]

rosie - my dog catches groundhogs, but my cat used to leave a mouse on the doorstep every morning... it was a present =)
but i used to go outside to smoke in my barefeet when i woke up.. i learned my lesson the hard way

i really want a veiled chameleon - but i need to be in my own home because it would be free range in the spare bedroom.. i want to do a window dressing with plants and vines, and basically have them all over the room and the shelves so they could hang out all over the place =)
i wonder if chameleons and water dragons get along.......

Miss ya paiges *smoochies* they have these baby chameleons at a pet store here and they are so adorable i like to go in there just to admire them..its pretty cool watching them eat a meal worm or cricket.and when they change colors that amazes me.they require a rain forest set up which is kinda expensive..thats why i haven't gotten one yet.but one of these days im gonna get one.
not sure with a water dragon and a chameleon getting along i guess you'd have to ask a pet store clerk.

honestly - unless it's an exotic pet store (and even then, i wouldn't trust them..) they don't know shit about shit.... i know more about my pets and even some i don't have, than the majority of pet stores that i've been in...
i'll put it like this.. when i got my first lizard (an alligator lizard) and asked about substrate, they told me to use bedding sand.. that a 10 gal would be big enough for life and that my wild caught lizard isn't native to this part of the country, so it can't possibly be a northern alligator lizard...
so what's wrong with that statement... :
bedding sand is one of the worst substrates you can use in a lizard cage, it's even deadly for tarantulas and snakes as they eat it and it blocks them up, it gets in their eyes and scratches the corneas and it doesn't hold moisture...
a 10 gal is good for a spider... a cornsnake, a small breed of gecko.. but msot lizards need more room..
and it's called a... what... northern alligator lizard... so what part of the country am i from if this thing isn't a native species?.... i always thought i was pretty north...
i'm grateful i didn't listen and the lesson learned... pet stores clerks generally don't know shit..
unless they actually OWN particular pet, i wouldn't turn them a deaf ear to advise to...
not to mention the fact atht our pet store is more of a tack shop.. they don't even have fish or reptiles... in fact, they don't keep many animals in there at all.. *L

but chameleon's are hella cute.. their eyes are my favourite..
(you should see the dragon eat, i hand feed her, so she watches the worm wiggling inthe tweezers, then she jumps up and rips it outa my hand and swallows it down.. *L it's awesome. sometimes she sits there with half the worm hangin out of her mouth for a bit.. *L)
but the room i have my lizards in is already a good 10 degrees warmer than any part of my house because of the lights i already have int here, so making it a rainforest in there wouldn't be difficult at all.. s'long as there's no carpet, it would work...
all you need for that is UVB/UVA and a humidifier .. plants would thrive in that kind of climate, so while your live plants are getting bigger, you could keep fake plants and slowly take them out as the real plants get big enough..
