General European criticism of US measures to fight terrorism and specifically Spain's decision to pull out of Iraq after the Madrid train bombing has only emboldened the fanatics to demand more. It has given the impression of a divided front more easily attacked. I suppose Europe has lost the lesson of Chamberlain's duping by Hitler and his "peace in our time" nonsense. Give the muslims an inch and they demand a mile. France is on the verge of losing its national identity and while I regret the loss to islam, they asked for it.
The cartoons violated a muslim tradition of not depicting Muhammed, and they did so on the first day of Ramadan. So excuse them for being a bit offended.
How is this any different than the American Family Association boycotting NBC for having Britney Spears show up on "Will and Grace" as a Christian television cooking show host who has a segment called "Cruci-fixins". Christians were angry that this was to appear just before Easter so NBC had it removed.
Why is it that conservative Christians are the only ones allowed to have their religious sensibilities offended these days?

I did not realize that the publication was on the first day of Ramadan. That seems insensitive, but I have to come down on the side of free speech. It is a long held standard in Denmark as it is here.
I find it far more appalling that NBC caved to protestors and engaged in self-censorship.

I don't condone fanatical Christian groups either. But I don't see Christians this day and age foaming at the mouth the way these muslim fanatics are doing. The only "Christian" group that comes close to this kind of revolting display of intolerance is this group in the news all the time at www.godhatesfags.com disrupting funerals and other national events. They are not torching buildings, blowing up cars and killing people though as revolting as their sentiments may be.
I don't care how "offended" the muslim world was by those cartoons. Let's see, it's ok to cut the head off of captives, fly planes into the twin towers, send children with bombs strapped on them to blow up busy market centers in Israel, blow up trains in Spain and kill people, blow up the subway in London. But we in the west should be more "sensitive" to muslim sentiments? Give me a break.

The radical clerics regularly go door to door inspecting for violations and killing any dogs that are found. How do we not offend a group with that mentality? We can't. It was a massive over reaction by the muslims, especially those protesting in the countries who showed the cartoon.
The BBC bravely showed the image with the predictable hysteria and death threats and all.
I am intrested, if in the Land of the free any of the nationals newsstations showed the image.

NBC Removes Offensive Segment From ?Will and Grace?
(Tupelo, MS) - Responding to pressure, NBC has decided to cancel an offensive segment from the April 13 episode of ?Will and Grace.? American Family Association (AFA) said that NBC cancelled the segment after pressure from NBC affiliates and AFA. The network had previously announced that the segment would feature Britney Spears in the role of a conservative Christian hosting a cooking show called ?Cruci-fixins? and would air the night before Good Friday.
NBC now says their own description of the episode was a mistake. In a memo to affiliates, the network said ?the information was mistakenly included in a press release describing an upcoming episode of ?Will and Grace? which, in fact, has yet to be written. The reference to ?Cruci-fixins? will not be in the show and the story line will not contain a Christian characterization at all.?
?NBC wanting us to believe they were mistaken in describing the segment, that they didn't know what was in their own press release, just doesn't hold water,? said AFA Chairman Donald E. Wildmon. ?Plainly put, NBC heard from their affiliates that they did not want to go through another ?Book of Daniel? situation while losing millions in advertising avenue.?
AFA's effort caused NBC to cancel ?The Book of Daniel? after three episodes because of loss of sponsors and viewers.
American Family Association is a pro-family advocacy organization with over two million online supporters.
Christian Censorship of Harry Potter

Schools, Libraries, and Free Speech
The Harry Potter books by J.K. Rowling are not only popular with children, they are popular with Christian censors as well. Harry Potter books have consistently been among the most challenged books in schools and libraries for the past several years, according to the American Library Association. Why do so many Christians object to Harry Potter? How have conservative Christians attempted to censor the Harry Potter books and prevent kids from reading them?
The American Library Association defines a ?challenge? to a book as any attempt to ?remove or restrict materials, based upon the objections of a person or group.? Harry Potter books topped the list of most challenged books for four years in a row: 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2002. It was the second most challenged book in 2003 and dropped off the list in 2004.
The Harry Potter series managed to be the 7th most challenged books for the entire decade of 1990 through 2000.
Clearly, the Christian Right is upset by Harry Potter ? these challenges are not coming from leftists concerned with the depictions of women or families, they are coming from religious conservatives who are concerned with the depictions of witchcraft and morality. Parents and religious leaders all over America have tried to get libraries to remove the books and classes to stop using them for literacy or other educational programs.
Here are some of the ways in which Christians have sought to censor the Harry Potter books:
In November 1999, Zeeland, Michigan, school superintendent Gary L. Feenstra instructed teachers to stop using the Harry Potter book for read-aloud time and school librarians to remove it from the shelves. The book wasn?t banned outright, but access and usage was restricted. Future purchases of more books was also prohibited.
In York, Pennsylvania, Deb DiEugenio tried to get the Eastern York School District to ban the Harry Potter books from its schools. According to DiEugenio, the books were "against my daughter's constitution, it's evil, it's witchcraft. I'm not paying taxes to teach my child witchcraft." Tony Leanza, a pastor and elementary school teacher who joined DiEugenio, argued that the Harry Potter books promote Wicca, a religion, and that therefore the presence of the books violates the separation of church and state.
In July 2002 in Cromwell, Connecticut, parents tried to get the Harry Potter books taken out of their middle school. They claimed the books promoted witchcraft and portrayed Christians badly. Dr. J. Michael Bates, a local pastor, said that even people without children in the schools should join the protest against Harry Potter books.
A Florida library stopped giving out certificates for Harry Potter's wizadry school as part of a promotion of reading because of parental objections. According to one parent, "If they are going to pass out witchcraft certificates they should also promote the Bible and pass out certificates of righteousness.?
Teachers at the Birkenhead Primary School in Auckland, New Zealand, were prohibited from reading the Harry Potter books aloud after a parent complained that they promoted witchcraft and the occult.
Teachers in the Durham District School, east of Toronto, Ontario, were instructed to only read from the Harry Potter books to their classes if the parents of all the students were unanimously in favor of it. Otherwise, other books must be used ? but no other books were given the same restriction.
The Christ Community Church in Alamogordo, New Mexico held a book burning on December 30, 2001. Pastor Jack Brock's "holy bonfire" burned not just Harry Potter books, but also music, videos, and other objectionable material. Hundred participated in the event.
Even the ALA?s list of banned books has itself been censored. In 1999, reading teacher Jeffry Newton was told that he could no longer post an ALA pamphlet of banned books outside his classroom door. He wanted to make students aware of censorship issues and was in turn censored for it.
Most libraries and schools have instituted ?opt-out? policies which allow parents to exclude their children from being exposed to material they object to. This has been an important factor in the decline in the overall number of challenges to material in schools, including challenges to Harry Potter books.
At the same time, though, it?s also likely that teachers and librarians have engaged in self-censorship. One of the dangers of the protests launched by the Christian Right isn?t so much that the government will step in to enforce their standards, but that people will privately enforce their standards merely to avoid conflicts; as a consequence, everyone loses out on the opportunity to be exposed to ideas merely because one religious group objects for religious reasons.

This issue is being by governments (and clerics, since in many cases they are one and the same) to politicize religion and rally the masses, much in the same way Bush is politicizing religion in this country. In both cases, it's being used to prepare all of us for war.]

As history buffs know, Yugoslavia was an artificial creation of southern elements of the old Austria-Hungary Empire after World War I, which upon the fall of communism returned to its variety of separate states with separate agendas. Serbia, as the center of resistance to the Roman Catholic Austria-Hungary Empire now is the seat of the Orthodox Catholic religion in that area, whereas Bosnia remained true to the Empire as principally Roman Catholic. On the other hand, the more southern states of Kosovo and Albania are basically Moslem.
"Ethnic" is sometimes the politically-correct way of describing religious-based conflict. Such is certainly the case in Kosovo and related regions of the former nation of Yugoslavia where the Orthodox of Serbia have been in conflict with the Albanian and other Moslems of Kosovo for al least the last century.
In Kosovo, a small Balkan country sandwiched between Serbia to the Northeast, Montenegro to the Northwest, Macedonia to the Southeast and Albania to the Southwest, the religious-based conflict is between the Orthodox and the Moslems. In 1999 it heated to the point of US/NATO intervention, statedly as a humanitarian effort to stop the ethnic cleansing by the Serbs of the Moslems in Kosovo. It has been estimated that more than 10,000 Moslems were killed during the 18 month crackdown against this heretofore Serbian province. Before that, the Moslem Albanians had ruled the Serbs from 1974 to 1981 with just as little justice for them. While the attack by NATO brought substantial property damage to Serbia and caused its then leader, Slobodan Milosevic, to temporally capitulate, it remains uncertain at this point as to just how successful it was in halting the religious conflict between the Orthodox Catholics and the Moslems.
During 2001 alone, the United States and other international donors granted US$ 1,28 billion to pay for the first year of a four-year plan for reconstruction aid to the area of the former Yugoslavia to assist in the rebuilding of damage caused by the Balkans religious-based conflict

Schism in the Roman Catholic Religion
Brazil is the world's largest Roman Catholic country. More than 80 per cent of the country's 165 million people identify themselves as Catholics, though now many - perhaps a majority have moved from strict Roman Catholicism to practice Candomble and its variants such as Macumba and Umbanda. Candomble is an African-derived faith, which has particularly strong roots in Salvador, a city of some 2 million inhabitants. What troubles the traditionalists who dominate the Roman Catholic Church in Brazil is Candomble's belief which merges the identities of African deities and Roman Catholic saints, so that St. George, for instance, is also Ogum, the god of war and metals.
Followers of Candomble, originally created by slaves, were persecuted by both religious and civil authorities throughout Brazil's colonial period, and continue to be so persecuted today. Even so, the number of Candomble adherents has been growing rapidly across Brazil in recent years, and what was once a lower-class religion has come to be seen as something to be valued as authentically Brazilian. Its increasingly assertive clergy have now begun to demand greater recognition and freedom. The traditionalists within the Church see this trend as "demonic" and they accuse the predominately black Candomble clergy of deviating from the one true faith. Some have closed their church doors to the Candomble, bringing charges that they are now being systematically excluded from the priesthood.
At this writing, the trend toward more divergence and conflict continues, though cool heads on both sides attempt to resolve differences which have now been going on for more than 500 years.

NORTHERN IRELAND
Roman Catholics versus Protestants
Protestants and Catholics have distrusted each other in Northern Ireland for many centuries.
The Protestant Reformation won for the Protestants substantial civil and religious liberty which they fear would be lost if Northern Ireland and its southern neighbor were to be merged - the goal of the present minority Catholics. Thus, if Ireland were to be reunited as 32 counties, there would be three million Catholics to only one million Protestants. So, instead of being a powerful majority as they are today in Northern Ireland, Ulster Protestants would then be in the minority. They fear that it would no longer be easy for them to divorce or practice birth control; that they might be dominated in other respects - to their discerned disadvantage. So, they resist any forced reunion of the two Irish territories.
Catholics, on the other hand, see their present position as a minority in Northern Ireland, as untenable. In the past, the Protestants have felt compelled to safeguard their freedom by discriminating against the Catholics and treating them unfairly in such areas as employment. The Catholics continue to fear a repetition of the 1641 massacres, which they also remind themselves of every July 12th.
And, these religious divisions underpin political divisions in Northern Ireland where "Protestant" has become a shorthand way of describing Unionists, who want the province to remain part of Britain; while "Catholic" is used to describe nationalists who want a reunited Ireland, one way or another.
Though many allege that this conflict and ensuing violence may not be the result of any single cause, there appears to be little doubt that if the emphasis on the religious-based differences has not been the cause, it has certainly contributed to and exacerbated an already difficult situation.
Sectarian violence continued throughout 2000 and 2001, and into 2002, though attempts at a permanent resolution of the religious-based conflict continued. In July of each year, as one small example, the Orange Order (Orangemen), Northern Ireland s once dominant fraternal group of Protestants organized in 1795, march through the streets commemorating the Protestant victory at the Battle of Orange, but provoking the Catholics, and inevitably causing violence, injury and death.

Famed graphic novelist/illustrator Frank Miller is joining the Cartoon Wars. He announced his plans at the WonderCon comic book conference yesterday. Yes!
During his WonderCon panel, Frank Miller discussed his next graphic novel. Once again, Miller returns to the world of the Batman, this time with Holy Terror, Batman!. Though the title plays with Robin's classic catchphrase, the book deals with a serious subject. Gotham has been attacked by Al Qaeda and Batman sets out to defend the city he loves. The book, which Miller has inked through 120 pages, is expected to run roughly 200 pages total.
Miller proudly announced the title of his next Batman book, which he will write, draw and ink. Holy Terror, Batman! is no joke. And Miller doesn't hold back on the true purpose of the book, calling it "a piece of prop[a]ganda," where 'Batman kicks al Qaeda's ass."
The reason for this work, Miller said, was "an explosion from my gut reaction of what's happening now." He can't stand entertainers who lack the moxy of their '40s counterparts who stood up to Hitler. Holy Terror is "a reminder to people who seem to have forgotten who we're up against."
It's been a long time since heroes were used in comics as pure propaganda. As Miller reminded, "Superman punched out Hitler. So did Captain America. That's one of the things they're there for."
"These are our folk heroes," Miller said. "It just seems silly to chase around the Riddler when you've got Al Qaeda out there."

Well that's what you're offered by those who have different agendas. Nuke 'em. Blast them towel heads off the face of the planet and life will be shiny and new again. They're not people after all, they don't have families, kids, parents, loves and hates, successes and dissappointments. They don't wish for happy and war-free lives. They're just cardboard cutouts that are there for our target practice and that whole "thou shall not kill" thing doesn't apply.
Just because they have a different culture and religious majority than we do does not make them non-people. Faux news and the rest of that echo chamber crew would have us believe that they don't deserve to live because they is "them" and we is us and everyone knows that god loves us and anything else is evil.

Pina I get my news from a variety of sources, including Le Monde (in French) and several other EU publications including the BBC and The St Petersburg Times (Russia, English version) I do not allow the news media to color my thinking. Why is it there are not news reports about the "peaceful" muslims of the world demonstrating about the violent "minority" they claim is contaminating their religion? Sure there are a few voices calling for restraint, not many. What I see is a group of people hell bent on dominating everyone else and killing those they cannot convert. (Much like the early "Christian" policy during the Inquisition and Colonial Era). How often have you seen traffic slow down a crawl because someone was involved in a four car proper merge on the highway? Pretty much never because peaceful and mundane doesn't spark our interest. But someone pulled over, or better a car accident, even on the other side of the highway, and you've got a four lane parking lot.
Here's a quick quiz. When 300,000 people got together to peacefully march on Washington this past September how much press did it get? Not much, but let fumble fingers Cheney shoot one of his caged bird shoot buddies and everybody's talking about it. Why would you think it's any different for coverage of Isalmic reaction?

I seem to remember you advocating for the US to nuke Iraq because a bunch of Saudi's took out the twin towers. Seems you're still working off of faulty information.
I never advocating nuking Iraq, I wanted to nuke the Taliban in Afghanistan even before the Twin Towers were attacked. In fact I made a thread in about late August of 2001 (on Cincinnati.com before it died) that all of our old nukes sitting around that we never had to use on the USSR could be put to good use in Afghanistan when I read about the Taliban freaks destroying an ancient Buddhist statue. I said in that thread I considered their extremism and intolerance a real threat that needed to be addressed. I wasn't serious about nuking them (not until after 09/11 that is) but my fears were well founded.
We would not need to be involved in the middle east at all if we had developed other energy sources. If the 1973 Arab oil embargo and then the 1979 Iran Hostage Crisis were not wake up calls, what is? Since then we have had the administratins of Carter, Reagan x2, Bush, Clinton x2 and Bush Jr. x2 and we are every bit at their mercy now as we were then. Just stupid. So Pina, our opinions are notn as far separated as may seem on the surface. Our approach and underlying sentiments vary I suspect.

Pina these demonstrations have been shown on every news source available. C'mon! Are you suggesting the muslim reaction to the cartoons is a fabrication, or the thousands of people involved in rioting a "minority" reaction? Having a different view is one thing, being blind to events for the sake of your views is dangerous. I thought you had more sense than that....

The AP reports:
Borders and Waldenbooks will not be carrying the April-May issue of Free Inquiry magazine, since it will be republishing those violence-inciting cartoons. They are citing safety and security of employees and customers, apparently feeling that there would be blood shed on the bookshelves should they carry this issue.
Although I grieve for the First Amendment, I cannot fault the businesses. This would be a forseeable outcome of stocking the issue, and if they did stock it and injury occurred, they would be liable.
