I mix the historical with the AGoT and I mix the different outfits (but I put all the outfits back together) but I like mixing them, I don't have many historical out fits.
Here is a historical in mixed outfits:

That's just me though HTH.
I love the historical AG time line, but with some of the creative minds here I've also been influenced to mix the dolls and outfits for a variety of scenarios.
Our historicals all like to become modern girls from time to time. They however do not like to share historical clothes with girls from different time periods. Occasionally Kit will wear something of Molly's or vice versa but the only girl Felicity will share with is Elizabeth. As far as PM vs. Mattel I don't think you should limit yourself. We have a variety of new and ebay dolls. All are special and each has her own special characteristics.
Well I personally don't have many dolls yet but what I see in my preference is that first of all I like a combination of modern and historical dolls. I mix and match outfits on the same doll (ie a shirt from one today outfit combined with the pants of another) but I don't usually dress dolls in other dolls' clothing (ie a dress made for Jess won't usually go on Sam.) Make sense? As far as PM/Mattel goes, well all my girls are mattel right now but I am in search of a PM Felicity and/or Kirsten (WB), and would like a Mattel Kit, so you can see I don't mind having a mix of those one bit! All of my girls - Felicity, Addy and AGT 12 who hasn?t revealed her name yet - are ebay girls which came to me as nude fixer uppers, and while I?ve done some research to know more about them, the books are not available over here.
So I really have no connection to Felicity?s and Addy?s "official" characters and don?t feel as bound to them as someone who first read all the Meet books and then picked out the character which appeals to them the most might.
While I do like the historical costumes and might pick up some over time, my girls are definitely modern girls.
Jemima, you can buy most of the AG books - and definitely all of the historical girls basic six books - through amazon.de - that's where I buy most of the AG books.
My thoughts aren't important; YOUR thoughts are. Collect whatever you want & mix them however you want. Let your imagination be your guide.
We like all the dolls & think they look wonderful no matter what they're wearing. My DD & DGD aren't particular but I guess they mostly kept AGT & historical stuff separate.
My historical dolls don't trade their clothing. Each is in their own time. I do sometimes add an accessory from an earlier time period that I especially like to a doll's collection. Say, the stereo viewer from Samantha's collection to Kit's. After all, it's normal to have at least a few things around from grandparents or great grandparents. Especially in the past, no one would have had all new things.
Brigitte, thanks for the heads-up. That?s good to know!!! I do want to read those books...
Hi all --
As I've been thinking lately about expanding my collection, I've been wondering exactly how I should collect (mixed feelings -- no pun intended)!
Do I want all AGoT/JLY dolls? If I get an historical doll, should she stay an historical doll or should I change her background/collection? Should I have a mix of PM dolls and current ones? If I bought any PM dolls, should I make sure they're all from the same year (so there's little to no variance)? Should I mix collections (some vintage items for my Today girls, e.g.: Kit's typewriter)? Should I get all AG brand clothes, or should I look on eBay, too (any recommendations of talented seamstresses/good sellers on eBay?)?
From what I've read, it seems like some of you have come up with the most creative stories about your dolls' lives, and others shudder at the thought of mixing collections, etc.
I want to hear how creative (or classic!) you all are and what your "style" is when adding to your collection! Does anyone else have anxiety about this or am I the only one? Haha!
Thanks,
Erin
PS: This story is completely random and unimportant. After I bought #23 in May, I threw out the box. Soon after, I regretted doing that. When I was at AGPNY earlier this month, I asked them for another box, just any spare one they had lying around. I didn't really look at it; I just put it in my closet and was happy to have it. Just yesterday I was looking at the box and noticed it had a GT23H sticker on it! Coincidence! Lame, I know, but I was excited and had to share.

This sounds dumb
But
I feel like if I were to buy a historical, I wouldn't want her to mingle with the AGoT at all, because I feel like it would be unnatural. LOL. I definitely wouldn't mix clothes or accessories, but that's just me... I think if you can come up with some creative, than it's cool. lol. But... I personally just have AGoTs. Mostly because I can't decide which Historical I'd want. And I don't know how I'd keep them apart.
Lol.

Up to this point, all my girls are modern girls. The historical girls have ancestors who are the characters in their books, and their favorite time periods correspond to the books. This way I'm keeping their background and collection, but they're still modern. Most of the GOTYs stay the same, except Linsi isn't Jewish anymore - I had to change that when she and Marie had their big fight, to add another difference between them. I also usually change their ages or they've naturally "grown up" with me. I mix and match all the outfits, shoes and accessories. I don't even bother to store them by outfit anymore, I just store them in separates and hang up the dresses. I occasionally use the Scenes and Settings as a time-machine to 1904. The girls usually wear the historical dresses for any occasion, or at least for a costume or special event. They love to mix and match EVERYTHING. One of the reasons I love Josefina's collection so much is that her clothes are so versatile and useful (so much that I made some for myself). They like to dress up as historical characters too, as do I. I don't find it odd that they have quill pens and other "antiques" because I have those kind of things too - I think quill pens are very fun to write with!
Emily is going to be my first strictly historical doll. However, she's an exchange student from the 1940s England to our modern times in America... so that way I have an excuse to dress her up as a modern girl once in awhile.
Here's a good example of how much the girls like to mix and match... please click on the link to view as the picture is really large. It was for our fashion spread.

Hi Erin!
First, that is a weird and totally wonderful coincidence about getting a #23 box at AGP purely by chance--very cool!
Second, at present, all of my dolls are modern girls who occasionally wear historical clothing for educational purposes--see my Grant's Farm Album for an example. I feel that Kit & Molly's collections are close enough in style to the AGOT clothes to be mixed and matched quite easily. They just look properly conservative for today's styles. Plus, so many of Molly & Kit's items are just darling and really match colorwise to the Today clothes. Kit is wearing her Meet outfit twin set with the new green cargo pants from the Coconut Play outfit right now and the pink matches the pink flowers in the sash just perfectly.
I think you should do whatever makes you the most comfortable. I do try to keep the clothes somewhat organized in our plastic storage containers with historical in one and modern in the other. The Addy & Kirsten clothes I've gotten will eventually go into another container to stay separated since they are more for special uses.
Since DD & I like to take the dolls all over the place, modern wear is more practical for us right now. Hopefully, we can develop a historical collection over time.
Colleen, thanks for the input on Josefina's clothes too--her collection is so pretty, I'm glad to hear you feel in incorporates well into your dolls modern gear!
HTH! Is #7 still calling your name?
Katie
Thanks for the replies, everyone!
I guess I just wanted some guidance or suggestions about what seems to work best for everyone (after all, these items are really a huge investment!). There really doesn't seem to be any "best" way after reading all of your helpful posts.
I think I want to make all of my girls modern girls, and maybe buy an historical outfit here and there if they call my name.
Katie -- Yes, I do believe 7 is at the top of my wishlist, haha! I begged and begged my mom for years for #7 and it was always the same story, "that's too much money for a doll!" Well, being that during my earlier years I did give a few Barbies hair cuts, I suppose I can understand her thinking (just a bit!) Even though I have a doll now, I feel like it would still be so gratifying to get that #7 already!
Erin
Most of my girls stay in their time period but sometimes i need someone to be their friend or sister so I dress them up in other time periods. My #21 (Poppy) is my only today girl and she is best friends with Josefina. All my girls have a best friend with another one of my dolls. Felicity and Kit, Josefina and Poppy, and Samantha and Emily are good friends but they dont know each other well enough to be yet.
We only have historical dolls so far, but I fell in love with some of the Today outfits. Crossing timelines doesn't bother me at all. My DGD dresses them all the time and it doesn't bother her. I try to put the items back in the correct girls section so I can find it again.
Remember, these are YOUR dolls sp do whatever you want with their clothes or collections. Pretending to be someone else is half the fun, so I sure the dolls would enjoy that too.
Since I have all the historicals, I am asking for my first JLY doll for Christmas. She will be named after an ancestor of mine from the 1700's, but I am sure she will enjoy the bluejeans too, Go play.
When I first began collecting two years ago, a doll could only wear her own collection of clothes. Historicals never strayed out of their time and AGOTs never wore anything other than today clothes and I never, ever mixed outfits.
Then I found HB and became inspired by so many of the wonderful pictures and realized, well maybe...
So last year I got really brave and after watching the Felicity movie. I let her wear Samantha's party shoes as they looked like the dancing pair. Back to HB for more courage (aka enabling) and I thought...hey, I can do this.
Soon Addy was borrowing from Kirsten, and Kirsten (who thinks she's PollyAnna) from Sam and Sam from the JLY girls, not to mention one of my Molly's insisting on being Laura Ingles.
Now it's just one big swapping party and my girls wear whatever they want. Only problem is Jess and Marisol tend to always like the same outfit so I'm forever settling arguments between them! I just purchased the boots from the new winter set and can already here the me first!, me first! coming from a certain duo!
Having said all this, I still put the outfits back into their original set during the off season times when they're being stored. Hey, old habits are hard to break!
I rarely mix historial and AGOT clothing. I'll put historical clothing on my today girl sometimes, but never AGOT clothing on my historicals. I also like the historicals a lot more though because they have real stories behind them. Don't get me wrong, I love my #7, but I don't want another today girl (and I would get about 3 more historicals if I wanted any more dolls ).

I have only one historical, Molly. She is wearing the Halloween outfit at the moment, however Cherry, my red haired, blue eyed AGoT is wearing Molly's Miss Victory Outfit. I have absolutely no qualms about mixing outfits and dolls.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I'm sort of that way too-keeping their history alive with ancestors (who happen to share the same first and last name) and they each have a favorite period they love best-Felicity loves the colonial era and Kirsten the pioneering era.Quote:

For me, it depends. Sometimes my dolls will borrow dress or undies. For example, sometimes the girls will be dressed for colonial tea, so Kirsten will borrow a dress from Felicity etc, but my historicals don't dress in modern clothing. I take that back, Kit sometimes does. She's a rebel. My modern dolls do occasionally dress in historical clothing.
Erilyn (AG21) in my time transcender. She is Medieval, fairytale, modern, historical . . .whatever I feel like.
Regarding parents thinking these dolls are too "expensive"................
Compared to toys boys want, they're not. Lego sets can go for more than $100! Video games can also go for more than $100 too!
It is totally your personal opinion. I don't mind mixing and matching. If I had all the money in the world and could get an entire historical collection, then I wouldn't mix and match, but since I don't I will continue to mix and match.
