I guess we should also say headlines like "Reds Win!" are also horribly inappropriate?

If the Reds are currently winning a game, then it's appropriate. However, if the game is OVER and the victory is in the past, the headline should read "Reds WON".

Sports geeks, as a general rule, tend to be idiots. That's why they're sports geeks in the first place. Anyway, whenever one of them tries to enter the realm of the pseudo-intelligentsia, that's where the LewMan springs into action.

Exhibit A- fans will call in (and that moron Richard Skinner agrees with them) and say "there's no such thing as RBIs. It's not runs batted ins, it's runs batted in, and therefore you don't say RBIs, you say RBI."

It's like trying to explain Shakespeare to a pony.


Yes, RBI is an abbreviation for "Runs Batted In." And if you used the long-hand, yes, you'd say Adam Dunn had 3 Runs Batted In last night.

But, when you abbreviate something, the rules of plurality apply to the abbreviation itself, not the phrase it's abbreviating. This is because the abbreviation becomes a noun in and of itself, especially where its usage is so commonplace as RBI.

Let me ask you this- would you say there were 300 POWs, or 300 POW?

And using that same logic, why isn't it RsBI? Unless you batted in one run, in which, yeah, then you'd had 1 RBI (but 2 RsBI).
