Have a tape by em called Black Radio won't play this Record. As said they some really fime funk rock.
I'm trying to find that one on CD. I already have AMF, MFLive, and their greatest hits disc. Iron Age is more trad metal. I prefer the funkier stuff, such as Greg Perry's solo from the early 1980s, or the Paul Sabu music from around the same era. Don't forget Teena Marie's from that era, either.
Joyce Kennedy is a great singer. Too bad there are so many lame Mariah Carey impersonators around being passed off as RnB/Soul, Joyce could kick their behinds with one vocal cord behind her back.

Darren, the thread was to have a music discussion. Why would it be anything else? I happen to like MF, have for years.
I'm sure there are people who don't like that band, but I can't tailor everything I post to avoid offending someone, nor do I intend to.

Glenn comes from a doo-wop background, and Joyce was a child recording artist. Several of the other members have been in Southern Rock bands, such as Blackfoot.
Funny thing, they are quite big in Sweden!

That period 1990 - 94, when it seemed funk-rock
was the only true rock alternative to grunge's
grubby shenanigans, was ultimately, I think,
disappointing. Nobody in the biz really took those
bands seriously. Dan Reed Network were criminally
under-promoted.

Lenny Kravitz was both part of what you are discussing, and part of the early '90s neo-glam as well.
I think the main problem was that the media was so intent on not having, to them, a rerun of the early 1970s and/or early 1980s. That is why they promoted Nirvana so heavily, because it looked and sounded like shit.
I think the media has fully divided music into two factions: One, the likes of Spears and the rest of the pre-fab pop princesses, plus the fully neutered, fabulously gay likes of 'N*Stync and related. On the other hand, you have the emo/grunge-descended/neo-riot grrl/nu-metal-hiphop loving "keepin' it real" types with their "bohemianism" that the media loves. Anything else falls into the shitter.
I was just listening to one of my fave CDs, "Donde estan los Ladrones" by Shakira. That was released in 1998, meaning it is seven years old. Not a bad track on it. Okay, it has programming and to be honest, in places it is essentially techno with Latin instrumentation on top, but I still like it a lot. They ruined the so-called Latina-wave by trying to turn them all into versions of Spears, a real no-talent. Better they should have combined the pan-Latinisms with some Maggie Bell-type vocals and some well produced guitar.
Shakira seems to be going along quite cheerfully
with the way she's being packaged a'la Spears, et
al.

I did like some of Laundry Service, mainly the Spanish-lyriced songs. The fairly recent dvd/cd package seems to show her treading in the waters of "classic rock".
I'd say she is not being as much Spears-ised as she is trying to appeal to both her latin fans and the audience she has settled for in the USA.
This country is so insular that outsiders often find insularity where there is none.

I think you are talking about her bellydance outfit, hence your mention of "tassels". If you call an outfit derived from Mediterraenean culture stretching back many, many years "tribal", then I guess it would be.
She's half-Lebanese from her father. Her mother is essentially Italian-Colombian.
She also sort of makes me think of Stacia, the former Hawkwind dancer. Incidentally, she went with the late Killer Kane for sometime.

The C.A. stuff is basically Spears en Espa?ol, no comparison to Shakira's Spanish language music. For one thing, there is a lot of Moorish influence, which C.A.'s doesn't have.

Hrrrmm...I was expecting at least a request for an elaboration. That's not the sole difference, of course. BTW..."Moorish" means Mediterraenean, basically. She uses ouds, violins, and accordians, for example. North African/Spanish/Mexican guitar is another.
