It is being reported that a new Pope has been elected.
Cardinal Joesph Ratzinger named or elected new Pope. 78 yrs old from Germany.
Pope Benedict XVI.
Why do they get Popes that are so old, why not get a younger one that will last longer??
thats what I say.................I mean 78 years old is getting a little over the hill.
I believe John Paul was 56? 58? when he was elected.
I think this Pope was a close advisor or something like that for the late Pope. They usually go with an older Pope becuase they hold more traditional values or with a younger Pope that isn't as traditional. But the last Pope was there for like 20 or so years so they are probably just trying to put off electing a younger Pope for now.
I am curious if there will be any international backlash from the Jewish community. The man served in the Nazi Party, so it could be interesting if it splits up what John Paul tried doing to bring religions closer together.
He served in the Nazi party?
Yes. He served in the military.
He served because it was compulsory in Germany at that time, and he got out fairly quickly because he went into the priesthood.
Yes it was compulsory, but I still wonder if it will cause any backlash.
I'd say that's why he's wearing the Papal robes today. The cardinals obviously thought it wasn't a matter of too much concern if it was mandatory....however, you know in today's politically correct society, something will probably be said.
Good question. I suppose it's likely some of the Jews may not care for it, but others may be more understanding, considering they knew what happened to those that didn't obey Nazi law.

I with both statements. It really doesn't matter to me one way or the other since I am not Catholic, or Jewish, but it could be interesting.
Like you said elp6n. Some may be forgiving since they new the consequences. Others may not since he should fear God more than Adolf.
they elect older popes in order to promote a constant change, many in the catholic church feel John Pauls 27 year reign was to much.
Well also it takes a long time to even become a Cardinal..so by the time u are one ur gonna be pretty old...
He does sort of remind you of what the anti-christ in the position of Pope would look like...he has that sinister, evil look to him. I will wait in the bomb shelter as he is sure to be readying the secret Vatican nuclear arsenal.
Speaking of sinister looking..doesnt he remind you of Senator palpatine a little

Pope Palpatine I.
VATICAN CITY (CNN) -- When he was a cardinal in 1991, Joseph Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict XVI, suffered a brain hemorrhage "which laid him down for a while, but he recovered from it," said CNN Vatican analyst John Allen on Wednesday.
The 78-year-old cardinal, chosen on Tuesday to become the new pope, now "appears to be in basically good health," but also is aware that his pontificate may not last "very long," said Allen, author of a 2000 biography of Ratzinger, "Cardinal Ratzinger: The Vatican's Enforcer of the Faith."
"About two years ago he was experiencing fatigue, but appears to have picked up from that," Allen said.
Ratzinger's brother Georg Ratzinger has raised questions about whether someone of the pope's age is fit for the post.
Before Benedict was elected pope, Georg Ratzinger said he was "convinced" that his brother would "be spared from this burden. At age 78, it's not good to take on such a job which challenges the entire person and the physical and mental existence," Allen said.
"At an age when you approach 80, it's no longer guaranteed that one is able to work and get up the next day."
Allen said the new pope's health is "OK," and "everyone who has worked with him and seen him in recent months, including myself, would say he appears to be in basically good health."
"But on the other hand, let's not kid ourselves," Allen said. "At 78 years of age it's unlikely we're going to see another 26-year pontificate," such as John Paul II's, which lasted from 1978 to his death on April 2 at age 84.
When Ratzinger told cardinals in the conclave why he wanted to take on the name Benedict XVI, "one of the things he alluded to was the fact that Benedict XV, the last pope to have that name, had one of the shortest pontificates of the 20th century," Allen said.
"So I think he has a very keen sense that this may not be a very long pontificate and there's an awful lot to do."
prayer i found
GOD OUR FATHER
Your Church needs another Peter to be the
VICAR OF YOUR SON.
All we ask is that he be a
POPE
richly endowed with all the gifts of the
HOLY SPIRIT.
It matters least to us
whether he is fat or skinny, tall or short,
relatively old or relatively young,
as long as he is blessed with
all the gifts of the
HOLY SPIRIT.
His nationality, his intellectual
achievements and his linguistic skills
are of lesser consequence to us
than that he be a shepherd
constantly nurtured by all the gifts of the
HOLY SPIRIT.
Aware that for some he will be too conservative
and for others he will be too liberal
and knowing that like
CHRIST
he will be embraced by many
and rejected by others.
FATHER
We ask you to give us a new
BISHOP OF ROME
who is close to the heart of
CHRIST
and fortified by all the gifts of the
HOLY SPIRIT.
AMEN
