Thanks Mods
Dont know if it was you are not Rocket, but I appreciate you getting rid of the Lee Roy Miles post. I know it was in the paper but its still a bad situation. Putting facts in a paper are a lot different than having your kids read others opinions about what they think about your father. I appreciate you for dumping it. Hopefully his kids didnt have to see it.
-
Re: Thanks Mods
That was an unfortunate incident that happened. Hopefully that wont affect the team.
-
Re: Thanks Mods
I did not see the post and it very well may have needed to be removed but I do think that since it was in the paper that there should be some discussion on the matter. I know it is a touchy subject and I really feel for the kid in this situation but IMHO it is not about the kid it is the adult that put himself in that situation. If the Adult did as the paper stated have possion of drugs while on the sideline of a Highschool ball game I have very little symphony for the guy and hope that they through the book at him. It is hard enough keeping kids on the strait and narrow path without authority figures muddying the water.
Again I did not see the post and if the Kid was being attacked then I am all for the removal of the post.
-
Re: Thanks Mods
I agree with Counts Mega, I didn't take it down, I'd have kept a close eye on it and not let anybody turn it into an attack on the kid. I appreciate the issue, and how tough it is on the kid and the family, but thankfully, we're not all responsible for our relatives sins or mistakes.
-
Re: Thanks Mods
Who took it down? Someone needs to clarify why it was taken down. It was a matter of public record.
-
Re: Thanks Mods
Yeah I was kinda wondering where it went since I got your pm rocket? Maybe Tob or Al took it down?
-
Re: Thanks Mods
It should have been taken down as the poster was doing it to embarass the family involved since they play on the Burton team. The poster, Minivike1 had already commented on the incident in another post. Since it directly involved a kid in our area, it did not need to be discussed on this forum as it was. You guys need to use a little common sense. Just because it was in the newspaper doesn't mean it is appropriate for discussion on this forum. We can all read the paper.
And as someone stated, the man is innocent until proven guilty.
It was up for nearly an entire day, so I don't see how a moderator could not have seen it. If you didn't then there needs to be a more regular screening of items on this board.
-
Re: Thanks Mods
Sportsman, speaking as a moderator of other boards, there are days when you are not on your computer. Don't blame Rock, Counts and others for it being up most of the day when they may not be online to look at things.
Luckily, I have a job where I have plenty of time at the computer to keep a check on things. Jobs, and family are much more important than the regulation of a sports forum.
-
Re: Thanks Mods
If that was the intent of the post then it should have been taken down.
However being that it was in the paper it IMHO is open to discussion. I hate it for the kid but by the same token it brings up whether staffs in our Area need to screen Volunteer coaches better than they currently do? I know that I would not want that situation around my child.
-
Re: Thanks Mods
I agree. If it is already in the papers, then there is no reason why we cannot discuss it here. As long as there is nothing regrading him or the situation.
-
Re: Thanks Mods
For the record, just to inform others, its not Lorenzo Miles or Josh Miles father, but Lee Roy does have 2 daughters who attend Burton. Im sure everyone is talking about their dad and they are having to deal with that. I realize some things may or may not be policy, but more than policy, we need to show some respect on here for others.
For some of you that may not have a clue, yes he deserves what he got, but just remember, he has 2 daughters that had to go home to a home that didnt have power, lights, running water, or heat because their father used his paycheck to buy crack instead of pay the bills. So with that being said, maybe some of you can feel some sympathy towards these youngsters and understand what they are truely going through.
-
Re: Thanks Mods
If someone took a cheap shot at the kid, its not allowed and I would have modified/deleted as necessary.
When I read the initial post, the first thing I did was find a coalfield and an article was in there about it. It's a tragic situation and I totally have sympathy for him, but thankfully it took a week, well more than a week to really get out, allowing things to be processed a bit. The parent/coach is a human, and we all make mistakes, but everybody is somebodys parent/child that we post about. It wasn't due to him being a players parent that caused it to get in the press, I dare say that there have been several parents of players brought up on things, some of them probably worse, it was the coaching aspect that got it brought into the press.
-
Re: Thanks Mods
youre exactly right, it wouldnt be such a big story if he didnt contribute to the high school.
My brother is a teacher at JIB, and Lee Roy admitted to him(After his arrest) that he has a serious problem and that he needs help. I know some people would like to see a crack head as a monster or a criminal but the truth is, anyone can make a bad decision that results in an addiction. He has a problem, but Im hopeful that people will support him and his family to help him with his problem rather than turn their backs on him. Regardless of him doing what he does, its obvious that hes a good person, He wouldnt donate so much of his time to help out Jimbo and the kids and I can tell you personally, I'll see him out working his ass off for the city. I hope he gets better.
-
Re: Thanks Mods
Hey I'll speak from experience, having had family members get messed up in things before, there isn't a one of us in the wrong circumstance that couldn't. We can all think we're above and beyond, but none of us are perfect and I wish him the best.
I think I met him before, and he was a nice enough guy, I wish him the best.
-
Re: Thanks Mods
That's a sad situation, especially for the kids. And I hate to see it being discussed on the net too. It's one thing for the family to hear people discussing in whispers, it's another to see it displayed so openly on the forum.
With that being said, I can remember when the hazing crap took place at RC and it was openly discussed on here. Which was fine, I guess...but the jokes are still posted every once in a while.
I guess we can see now how that sort of thing tends to have a trickle effect on down to the innocent party that may some how be associated with unfortunate events.
(By the way Rock, this response wasn't directed at you personally!)
-
Re: Thanks Mods
I know you get pissed off when union man and some of the others make broom jokes on here, So I can completely understand. You have a right to be upset, its not so far out to think that we all can be somewhat mature on here.
I know I like to act like a clown and post some of the funniest things on here, but when it comes to people getting hurt, that crosses the line.
-
Re: Thanks Mods
Its ok, I mean its tough, because what some people get ticked off at doesnt bother others, and likewise. I'd love to have kept it off of here, but when it hits the papers/tv stations, its difficult to do and I'd rather there be an adult discussion about it, than 79 people private messaging about it.
Mega provided some good facts to it that from reading the paper and the press, we wouldnt have known.

Re: Thanks Mods
That is an excellent point I worked with one lady for well over a year before and never would have guessed that she was into drugs like she turned out to be. I still think some type of screening should be done but there is no way it could catch every case.
-
Re: Thanks Mods
Mega you are right Drugs are a huge problem in our area and getting worse all the time and all users are not evil incarnate(having them around kids does bother me a bit more though) If the Man has admitted he has a problem that is the first step to getting his life back on track and IMHO if he really wants to change his life I hope that he is able to pull himself and stay clean. I truly hope everything works out for he and his family
-
Re: Thanks Mods
Not directed towards you Counts!
I don't see what the big deal is, if the post was meant to intentionally hurt someone then it is not cool, but I don't understand why we can't talk about it on a Message Board. Yes it is sad to see a local man get busted for his offenses, but he still broke the law, he was with the kids everyday after school and who is to say that he wouldn't have sold these drugs to the younguns. You can't say "Oh I know ol Lerory, he would never do anything like that," but I bet they wouldn't have known he would commit a crime to support his crime. There is no perfect person, we all have our faults, but I thought chat rooms were meant to talk about public stuff. As far as admitting he has a problem, he should have thought about that before this happened!
-

Re: Thanks Mods
I didn't take it down...I don't even know anything about it other that what little I have seen in this post...I've been away for 2 days...So it wasn't me.
-
Re: Thanks Mods
I think it was a sad situation...very unfortunate and I hate his kids are having to deal with that.
However as far as posting a situation on here.....news and events are meant to be on here right I thought anyway I could be wrong.
Posting a non demeaning post about public information IMO is not wrong. What about the Katrina victims...we should keep those families in mind before we constantly remind them their homes were destroyed...What about the president dog him like it is no ones business....What about that little girl in Norton that was brutally assaulted and every one decided they should talk about it, anyone ever think about that family? I guess what I am saying is why is it ok for some to talk about somethings but others things are off limits?
-
Re: Thanks Mods
I took it down. I just did not think it needed to be placed on the forum. he is a friend of mine and not only that but i did not want anything started over the matter. plus i did not want any attention taken away from what norton is doing this year in there football program. it already started going that way. and the young men does not deserve that.
-
Re: Thanks Mods
I can't say that is a good reason to take it down. Now if people were using it as a spring board to attack the kids at Norton I could understand it. And while I am all for second chances and truly hope that the man in question can get his life back together. I for one would not let my kids within 50 feet of him (and that may be wrong on my part but it is the way I feel about it) I think it does bring up two big issues #1 the type of people we have around our kids and #2 How big is the Drug problem in our area. I know that the problem in Lee is well documented and the problem in Dickinson County was bad enough that the School Board came up with a Drug testing policy for extra curricular activity (Sports, Cheerleading, anything nonschool related)
I wonder if Teachers and Volunteers at all schools should be required to submit to a drug testing. I think most parents would be all for having there children tested as well but unless i am mistaken Testing of 100% of the student population could never happen and at best could only be limited to extra curricular activities which IMHO would be a positive step
-
Re: Thanks Mods
When you are calling out names of kids, saying that I bet so-and-so is really embarassed by this, then IT DOES NOT BELONG ON THIS FORUM. Kudos to AL, you and only you did the right thing. Keep on keeping on big guy.
-
Re: Thanks Mods
I agree that calling the kids out and bringing it to that level should not be allowed and if I had seen that I would have removed it as well. That being said I don't think that this is something that should not be swept under the rug.
-
Re: Thanks Mods
The thing about it is...it shouldn't be swept under the rug about who actually got arrested or whatever, but if you bring kids, relatives, or a football team into the picture who had nothing to do with it...that's wrong and should never happen. Kids should never be punished or made fun of or whatever for something their parent, coach, or relative did.
-
Re: Thanks Mods
And I agree with that 100%
I do think that teams need to do some type of background check on Volunteers since according to the paper this was his second offence with the Drugs. As I said before I am all for second chances but I can say that I would be pretty upset if a school was putting my child in close proximity of a person that according to the paper was convicted in 1995 after pleading guilty to conspiracy to distribute cocaine. IMHO the school system could have alot to answer for. I think if I were a parent of a child at Norton I would be at the next School Board meeting mad as a wet hen that this was allowed to happen. I really feel for the kids that did nothing to put themselves in this situation.
I would honestly like to think that All the schools in our area would put into place some measures that would prevent someone with a drug rap sheet from working with kids.
Miles was convicted in 1995 after pleading guilty to conspiracy to distribute cocaine, Kerney-Quillen noted.

Re: Thanks Mods
I posted about it in another thread. A person who i talk sports with at work, told me it was in the coalfield. Honestly i thought it was a joke. So i ask. I was waiting on a reply, yeah they give the ball players speed. A joke. And that be that.
I hadn't seen the paper or hardly had time to do anything.
There was no real reply.
Then up sprang the post in question. No i didn't think it was right and what i read, yes it did seem, it was in the direction to embrass the family and Leroy, and Burton as a team.
If i had been a moderator it would of been gone. It was not needed and it seem to just be a smear post and attack. And the replies were the same. It's sad and it's bad. You can't always control what goes on on here.
But the family and the team didn't need it. I know Leroy myself if he did it well it's sad. And so is his addiction if he has one.
I also didn't like the idea of what was put in the paper that they arrested him at the ball game. Come on now folks, there was no need to embrass a person, or possibly upset a whole bunch of young men.
They knew where he would be, it wasn't like he was running from the law. And to photograph him while still wearing a Burton coaching shirt? Sounds like some played out a little drama to me. Sheriff's dept. Yes i know the intent may of been good, but i think it was handled badly by all. Yes i know they have a job to do. But 8 PM at a ball game, where they knew the man would be? Sounds like a little made up drama to me.
I was glad the post was taken down. I won't lie about it. The forum didn't need another bunch of crap. And the thread had no intention of anything but smearing the man, the family, and the Burton football squad.
And no im not against freedom of speech but against freedom of smear for the heck of it. If someone wanted to truly discuss it. This part of the forum was the place to put it.
Not out for everyone to interject their thoughts and ideas and smear campaign.
-
Re: Thanks Mods
LpD, I'm inclined to agree and disagree both with you. I think it was partially a bit over the top but maybe thats what is needed. I mean he was arrested at the game for the robbery, the drugs were in his possession. We always have people who say that people put sports above other things, if they had waited, they would have been just as guilty. Its a sad horrible state, but addiction we all know is something that many people hide and can pretend isnt a problem. No offense to him, but right now, that apparently can't be the case. I can see both sides of the issue on it, why you would want it to be more publicized, but if it was my own, why I wouldn't want it to be.
All we can do is hope that he can get himself straightened up.
As for the Burton team, this took place at the PV game, it was not last Friday but the Friday before that, I'd say that most of the Burton team and such had over a week to kind of prepare themselves for this and expect things to be said. The only smear you could give the team is having someone with the past issues involved, but we all know that good volunteers are hard to turn down. I don't think the man should be crucified due to his past transgressions either, I mean the old fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me comes to mind.
-
Re: Thanks Mods
It's just a sad situation. I hate it for the family and kids. I know Leroy but haven't seen him in probably 10 yrs. He was always nice to me. And i myself wondered at times and heard a few rumors. But we all know how gossip is.
Like i said i just hate it for the family.
As far as the post that was on here. I think some wanted to use to well maybe stir things.
I honestly don't know and it is hard to find folks that will donate their time to help out. It's the same here at Appy. We have to have some who just give of themselves. We can't afford the luxuries some can.
I guess the biggest thing some need to remember is something you said Rocketer, and i thought about it myself.
If it was you or a member of your family would you want it on the forum. I know that is asking a big question. And yes there may of been a write up and it may seem clear cut, however do we add to the embrassement or when do we decide it's time to say ok that is enough.
Like i said above. I am all for free speech and the right to expression. However, i think sometimes a little common sense has to play into the situation. Talking about it here on this section of the forum to me, well that is better than exposing it to all the 13 yr olds, and some who may not understand all of the situation, but will use it to maybe hurt others emotionally.
I know there is times i have said things. Yet if i say publically on the forum. I try to make sure i apologize pubically on the forum.
I just honestly don't think the kids needed something to throw around, to hurt a family already suffering.
And anyone who knows anyone who has suffered addiction, it's hard on all, the person, the family and friends.
To me i think of it about like it was when i suffered some problems in my life with illness. Had it not been for family, good friends and hope, who knows. Same as with this situation.

Re: Thanks Mods
Again I bring up the fact that it was ok to discuss the baby in Norton that was horrbily assaulted, that post had a lot of hits. Why was this was called in to question when the same type of embarassment was used...things about where the mom was etc etc....To me it is no different. It looked like a double standard.
-
Re: Thanks Mods
Well we didn't have this forum and honestly it seem that since the one person was mentally challenged or handicapped no one wanted to discuss it.
And the names were put out there as in this case. It was less pronounced i guess you would say, this is not as that situation. One due to the publicity it received from WCYB and others and local newpapers.
That is my opinion. If i had my way. Any one who hurt or abused a child in any way shape or form would get good old country justice. No police or judge needed. Just a few good ole country boys and well a big hole.
Sorry to be so blunt. But when it comes to children i have no problem.
In the situation you mention everyone started the not mentally stable? If not how did they know what to do? No to me i would discusss it.
But i'd rather discuss it with the person who did the violation. Sorry again to be so blunt.
One difference one made a mistake due to addiction. Two one person was given the opportunity and was known as a person who would do this if possible. And yet a mother let it happen knowing the person?
Guess i spent to much time around kids and well football players and boys i watched grow up to be young men. And well my own son and nieces and nephews. If it was one of them.
I don't think the local police would have to worry about it. Even though i may have a number. I'd have my own justice.
-
Re: Thanks Mods
I agree with you on the if it is to be discussed then on this Old Timer section...I understand that and agree, that was not what I meant.
I am making an observation that it seems something are considered off limits when others that are equally as sensitive are not. This is not aimed towards you at all I was just responding to the situation.
Some people may think that it wrong, some may think that only one mod is doing their job or whatever. I just think that I agree with Counts on this one.
-
Re: Thanks Mods
I agree to and i dont' want you to think i was blasting you.
But both situations hit me hard. A person i know and then a kid i didn't know but just being a kid.
I don't know i am just glad i am not judge, jury and executioner. If anything i'd like to smack the crap out of Leroy and say why, do this to your family and kids.
And the one who abused the child. I'd have no problem with an old abandoned strip mine and an old fashion beating. Sorry and i don't mean to be rude or blunt. But to harm a child? I can't see it. My baby is 22 and i still think of him as my baby.
Again i didn't say it was wrong. But i just don't think on the other forum it helped, the kids don't need the added attention due to dad's mistake.
Here we can talk about it. And hopefully not let it make problems. But kids can be brutal to each other. I think any parent knows that. It's sad but honestly, if anything i'd like to say ole friend why.
-
Re: Thanks Mods
Its like this, because of his lat name, it links it even more, I heard so many people say Lorenzos dad, well he isnt. Its just a situation where itd been fine to post what happen, but what is to discuss about it? The details is in the story, then you had some person reply with "Maybe its time for drug testing for the Burton football team" MODS cant be here all the time, it only takes 10 mins of a MOD not bein here before it becomes a court issue. And for that comment there isnt a team around that at least one player wouldnt fail a drug test. The odds are against that.
This is just a reply to a topic in general. Not directed at anyone.

Re: Thanks Mods
thanks everyone i just did not want this to get way out of hand. in my opionion it was just about ready to do that.
