They played an excellent game, had that game went to over time, It would have been all on clintwood to win it. (Because in OT they would have definatly had an advantage having a FG kicker!!!) Both teams defenses' SHUT each other completely down (ASIDE from the ONE drive burton put together with under 2 minutes to go) Burton had the ball on the 9 yard line from a fumble, and STILL couldn't score! Clintwood has NOTHING to be ashamed of... they NEVER quit they played their hearts out, as did the raiders!!!! It was one of the best defensive games i've watched!! neither team allowed much of anything!!! Great LPD match up Clintwood / Burton usually is.. and unlike other fans "Out that way" Clintwoods fans took it with class lined up where the players came out, and cheered the greenwave on, which is ... as far as I know, how clintwood always are. 100% Class act.. KNOCK You to the ground, and help you back up... My hats 110% off to clintwood... I KNEW this game was going to be like to this... becuase CLINTWOOD always plays burton TUFF!!!!!!

The rest of Clintwoods defense did an excellent job open with open field tackles. I wish every game could be like that ... (Ok no I don't) but As I was leaving The Clintwood fans lining up cheering their team on as they left, Great to see and what you SHOULD expect when you go watch Highschool football!!! Wish I would have went to this game instead of the Appy/GC game. I came very very close to making a left towards BHS, but went straight through the light to Appy.

The Appy/GC game was pretty sad wasn't it? Not that it wasn't a good played game or anything... just... there weren't many people there at all, and that really just seemed to ruin the entire atmosphere and - for me - most of the fun factor in watching the game.

Agreed, I didnt make it till the 4th, but from what I saw in the 4th it looked like a stalmate and one hard fought game. Gotta give it up to Stewart too, I had my doubts but he came through when we needed him to. The o line seemed to give him enough time to make a few plays too. So what did I miss the first 3 quarters? I heard Cwood turned it over a lot, dunno if it was forced or not, somebody fill me in.

Not to hijack the thread about Clintwood's great game tonight, but I was suprised at the size of the crowd. I expected the fences to at least be covered.

Well both teams fumbled (An unreal ammount) Robinson picked off 2 passes, Clintwood picked off one that I can think of... It was just ALL DEFNSE on both sides.... little spark of Offense here and there from both sides, but the Greenwave / Raider defense just tightened their chin straps and shut each other down.

Sounds like I should have went to the game.

Clintwood impressed me. I told people at work that Clintwood worried me because they play very tough defense like we do. and wow, what is his name, Kenny Dotson? the kid impressed me running tonight. everything was tough going for both sides but this kid pounded the ball and has some speed of his own.

Clintwood, Great class, my upmost respect goes to these young players. They played their hearts out and give burton the toughest game of the season. I have to agree with Freddy the best defensive game I have seen all year. I'm sorry but don't know the name (maybe Kenny Dotson) but number 10 for Clintwood played an excellent game. Ok, I'm completely drained but here goes. Excellent game, especially if you love the defense. Turnovers, at least in my mind, really hurt Clintwood. 2 punts fumbled and their best drive were snuffed due to one. It definitely seemed like Clintwood had the momentum and the last fumble happened and something clicked in Norton. Both kickers missed a field goal, but the defenses both really shined.

I know I'm biased, and not meaning to slight Burton, but I just didn't feel the best team won (IMO), but in the final 2 minutes, Burton was able to move the ball and get a score. A good portion of their yards for the game came on that drive, but they stepped up and made plays. I think Clintwoods pass rush may have been slowed a bit due to playing so hard for 4 quarters trying to contain Norton's speed and Stewart took advantage of it and made plays. It was as I said, an ugly beautiful game. Neither team wanted it and neither team wanted to lose it.

I thought both teams played pretty classy tonight. I know that there had been talk about attitude but if there was, for the most part, at least big and obvious things, Norton was very contained. I think they realized that this was a battle early, and I would say that Coach Adams had really enforced to them that they didn't need to give us anything. Great job by them.

I feel for the Wave, their defense was considered a weakness at the beginning of the year, and here at the end, they effectively shut down the speed of Norton. Lots of hard work, good adjustments by the coaches, and a lot of desire.

So again, hopefully didn't offend anybody from Burton, I admit my bias, but I just feel like the ending wasn't what Clintwood deserved but in a game like that, someone has to lose. Even when the extra point was blocked, it just felt like it still could happen but Norton was sitting pretty then and able to pull it out.

I'm sure I'll have more but....dang what a game.

good post rock, I dont have any problems with you saying what you said. I'll admit that it could easily have went either way basically because burton's offensive line got blown up all night. I know cwood plays great D and at the same time, it seems Burton's o-line has regressed the whole season. Jordan and Lorenzo didnt have much room to run, I wouldnt even call it containing, Id just call it as them having no chance, especially to run wide.

Burton hadnt hardly had any of those types of penalties the whole year or any kinds of incidents like that. "that other team" over your way just tends to bring that on themselves. I think Burton pretty much acted and played the way they have all year, it was a good clean game and I give cwood a lot of respect. Even though cwood has beat burton a lot over the years, it seems like there have been some classic games.

I agree with Rock here. It was a great game, but we should have got it. Give credit to JIB for pulling it out though. I don't remember Kenny Dotson fumbling all year and he fumbled three times friday night. He wasn't even touched on two of them. Two muffed punts, and he was carrying the ball in the wrong hand on another one. We moved the ball well on 3-4 drives and just fumbled them away. I think we give the ball to JIB 3-4 times inside our own 20. I've never seen so many fumbles in a game and have no points from them.

To all the JIB fans....I thought that Stacy was the most overrated player to ever come from that school, and to be honest, I never really had anything good to say about him...I think that Stewart is going to be a pretty good one for you guys. hey man, I dont really wanna talk about it on here, but family reasons kept me from getting there from the beginning, I didnt think I was even going to make it at all. I got there right when the 4th quarter started and I saw some people from cwood and asked if they knew you or could point you out to me. One thing that must be mentioned that most dont know about is Burton's line got thrashed all night long. They put in Ricky Harris for the last 2 drives and his pass protection was vital to what Burton was trying to do. He blocked better than about anybody on the offensive line the whole night and had 13 tackles playing DT on defense. Great game kid, I recognized how important you were.

First off, there is no disrespect intended by this, just an honest opinion. Burton is NOWHERE NEAR the team that I thought by the way everyone has been talking. They are the weakest team up front that I have seen all season. They do have some incrediable athletes however. Both teams played relentless football. It was by far one of the best games I have ever witnessed. I dont know how many turnovers there were all together from both clubs but it has to be close to some kind of record. Both teams absolutely played there guts out and Burton has my respect. Stewart is going to be one heck of QB.

The thing about games like this is, it is a shame someone has to lose. In Burton would have lost we would be on here pointing out our fumbles and interceptions that hurt us or the dropped passes that we don't drop in most other games. passes that were in our hand's in the endzone. In this type of game, the team who lost will feel like the "better" team didn't win because it was so hard fought on the part of both teams.
I wish Clintwood would make the playoffs but it will be tough if it is still possible

John Elway made an appearance at the 16th annual Lions Bowl.

Not really, but J.I. Burton quarterback Ethan Stewart did his best impersonation of the NFL legend.

Stewart led the Raiders to a dramatic 6-0 win over Lonesome Pine District foe Clintwood at Lawson Fitchko Stadium on Friday night.

With the win, Burton (9-0, 6-0) clinched at least a share of the LPD championship for the first time in 33 years - and only for the second time since the district's inception in 1960.

After struggling for much of the game, Stewart led Burton on its only scoring drive of the night - a six-play, 60-yard assault with less than three minutes remaining.

"I was rushing a lot of things in the first half," Stewart said. "I didn't allow the play to develop like I should have.

"I knew we had to get the win there at the end, though. I just tried to focus, slow things down, read it and make a play."

The sophomore's 26-yard touchdown strike to senior Jon David Reed came with just 1:12 left, and erased what had been a subpar effort from the Raider offense.

"I tell you, he really stepped up on that final drive," Burton coach Jimbo Adams said. "He put the ball on the money and made the play we needed."


Before then, both teams appeared to have caught the spirit of Christmas giving early - combining for 10 fumbles and nine turnovers.

Three turnovers inside the Raiders' 20-yard line stymied several legitimate scoring chances for the Green Wave. Add to that a pair of lost fumbles on punt returns, two interceptions and a missed field goal, and you have a recipe for disaster.

"You can't win any football game with that many turnovers," Clintwood coach Rick Mullins said. "The ball was slick and they made some great plays.

"With our mistakes, the game probably shouldn't have been as close as it was."

But Clintwood's defense continually made plays behind C.J. Phillips. The Green Wave held Burton six times inside the Clintwood 30-yard line.

The Raider defense was no slouch, either, recovering a fumble inside its own 20 to start the fourth quarter, then forcing a Green Wave punt to set up the winning drive.

It was that kind of effort that earned the entire Raider defense player of the game status, shared with Clintwood's Phillips.

"Man, it was a very physical, defensive football game," Adams said. "I thought both defenses were relentless."

Stewart agreed: "Our defense just dominates. They keep us in it. We have good faith in the defense and that allows us to take chances."

Next week, Burton travels to Gate City for a showdown that will decide whether the Raiders will be outright champions.

Adams might be pleased with a piece of the crown, but he definitely wants it all to himself.

"The worst thing that can happen is we're LPD champs," he joked. "But you know, we want to beat Gate City.

"I know it's going to be a monumental task, but we have nothing to lose, and we're going over there with one thing in mind - to win."

Reed has no qualms about it, he wants the LPD to himself, and was inclined to quote legendary Alabama coach Paul Bear Bryant to sum it all up.

"Co-champions ain't good enough," he said. "Bear Bryant once said, "?A tie is like kissing your sister.'

"We want it all to ourselves, we don't want to share."

I honestly feel like that Burtons past 2 teams were much, much better than this years team. Seems like last year and the year before they were much stouter up front and had a decent running game to go along with the passing threat.

I also wasnt all that impressed with there defense. Yeah they held us in check but they did not dominate us. Hell we had at least 3 solid 50-60 yard drives just to cough the ball right back up to them. I dont know a whole lot about D-1 teams away from here, but with JIB line of scrimmage, I just cant see them doing a whole lot. Skill positions only get you so far in football, eventually you are going to play somebody where you have to buck up and be able to get 3 yards at time and grind it out.

no doubt that this year's O-line is smaller and it shows. Just look at Thackers numbers up the middle. Last year they could grind it out with Thacker, like they did in the State game. It was the only thing they could do on a consistant basis, only to get in the redzone and start throwing the ball.
That said, the Defense is much better than the last couple years too. not the best trade off but it beats being weaker on the o-line and not improving the defense on the other side of the ball.

Records aren't all that determines which teams are better. JIB could have a better this year because the competition they've played. If this years JIB team were to play last years PV, last years CW, who knows, maybe they'd have two losses. I think the year that GC lost to GW in the playoffs, they were better than the year they won state. Just because someone says they think a team had a better team in either of the two years before is not a slight at this years team. They don't have to be better than teams in past years, just whoever they line up against each week this year. Over the past few years CW has beaten who they should. They beat PV this year, I'd say that was a big game. They probably should have had one loss coming into the JIB game, early season injurys put a kink in that plan. I don't think there has been any bickering between CW/JIB fans in this thread. Actually, it's been nothing but complementary from both sides. You're the one talking about sore losers. And supposedly you don't even have a dog in the fight.

Burton is not playing no where near the competition that there has been the past couple of years. Burton like Clintwood, GC, and PV are down from what they have been recently in my opinion.

Burton will be brought back down to earth in hard way this week.

I have the same feeling. It would be much better for them to be playing GC at JIB. GC is a completely different team at Legion.

Well I could be wrong, I was horriably wrong about the PV/GC game. I just dont see a team that weak up front riding in the clouds for much longer. GC will smack them in the mouth.

You people just cannot give Burton the RESPECT they deserve!! You dont go (9-0) in t he LPD because its huhhh something that everyone does. HA HA and clintwood your just pissed that you havent even made the PLAYOFFS in years and poor poor little BURTON beat you. If our defense wasnt any good why didnt you score or even come close to scoring all I can say is we are (9-0) going to the playoffs and your greenwave butts are sitting at home watching tv. and if we dont win next week Hell in reality we are not supposed to. CW may not have made the playoffs in 4-5 years but they've managed to dominate JIB for almost 2 decades. Including the year they got smoked by Franklin. Try hard to win next week, no one here expects anything less. I hope you win actually. You just need to calm down a little there killer.

Well I hate to say it, but this is the worst Clintwood team to come through in a couple of years, its a tough thing to say especially after a night where they played there absolute guts out, but I think most people from Clintwood will agree with that. Like I said, the district is down some what this year, its made for some incrediable games, but the truth is nobody has the calibur team that they have had in the past few seasons. Burton will get a reality check this friday and if and when they play Appy again. You cant average 155 pounds on the offensive line and do much in the game of football these days. I said in my previous posts that I respect Burton, they also played there guts out and were relentless, that still doesnt change my opinion of them however.

I haven't seen anybody disrepecting Burton, they made the plays at the end of the game and won. They gained what 100 yards of field position on 2 punts lost and weren't able to put get anything out of that. Make no mistake, Clintwood has improved in many aspects, but we're not a state championship caliber team this year. Missing a few more players. Burton is good, but 9-0 this year isn't as impressive as some teams with 3 losses in previous years. It's generally accepted that the district is down just a bit. Hey if Burton can go 10-0, more power to them and that's great and will be happy to congratulate them for it. If you pay attention though, what wins come playoff time is the ability to control the line of scrimmage more often than not, and Burton is lacking in that this year. Now granted, they can explode at anytime and bust one, and maybe they can make enough plays and have that happen. Truthfully, I told that to several people from Burton last night, that is what I expected to happen. Clintwood didn't score, and with the multiple big play weapons Burton has, you expect a mistake to happen. No doubt they are a team that can bite you in an instant, and I have nothing at all against Norton, just giving you an honest opinon.

If anything at all, I was more impressed with Clintwood's defense than Burtons. Burton supposedly has all these big weapons but they really didnt do anything all night long except in the final minute, which Ill admit was impressive. Clintwood pretty much manhandled them the majority of the night.

Now Clintwood does not have near the offensive firepower that Burton was "supposed" to have so Burton shutting us down is not near as impressive to me as us holding them to 6 points IMO.

I will bet that "the man" doesn't even get much playing time for the Raiders. If he got to play against Clintwood on Friday night he wouldn't be talking like he is.He would have much respect for Clintwood if he had actually "played" against them.
