Re: Some info about this gun
Try posting this on the Guns and Ammo forum. It is at Guns and Ammo
The guys there should be able to help.
Re: Some info about this gun
Re: Some info about this gun
Dad said it reminds him of a British 303 or a Chinese 7.65
Re: Some info about this gun
Let us know what they say.
Re: Some info about this gun
I think the gun is german made. Maybe the predecessor to the mouzer
Re: Some info about this gun
looks german made. My grandfather has a double barrel 16 gauge shot gun from WWII his brother sent him from germany. It favors that gun a lot. The way it's made, the slenderness,etc...
Re: Some info about this gun
its a flintlock .303 book it and mark it.
Re: Some info about this gun
I am gonna post it on the guns and ammo forum this morning will let ya know what I find out. I looked up all the ones mentioned and none of them matched up to it. It uses a regular centerfire cartridge.
Re: Some info about this gun
Not heard anything for sure yet one person said it is similar to a springfield trapdoor but it's not one, had another say they had never seen anything like it.

Re: Some info about this gun
I was thinking much like centennialdawg when you showed the picture yesterday. I still haven't figured it out completely yet though.
Re: Some info about this gun
Bruce has seen it and doesn't have a clue either. I even sento some pics to my cousin outside of DC who is a retired vice cop for DC police and has alot of friends that are high up in the FDA and he didn't know anything about it either. He had one guy that would know, it was his job for the FDA to know these things but just before he got the pics he was in a bad car accident. I have it posted on the guns and ammo site but nothing yet.
Re: Some info about this gun
You all talkin about Bruce Baldwin?
Re: Some info about this gun
Bruce Beverly at Beverly's Gun & Pawn in Coeburn.
Re: Some info about this gun
There is a guy just below Natural Tunnel that could probably help. He is the Bruce I am talking about.
Re: Some info about this gun
haha man im not trying to be a smart alec or anything but you didnt really look up flintlock british .303 did you?>
Re: Some info about this gun
well since i was a smart alec i will tell you this, it looks like a lee-enfield british rifle. which means it could be south african, british, any of the countries that used british rifles during world war 1. I would look it up find a lee-enfield historical site and see what you can find. good luck.
Re: Some info about this gun
Sorry, but it is nothing like a Lee-Enfield. I should know as I own one in .303.
My guess is a foreign make, as I've not seen anything in past American historical arms that look anything like it. Definitely a "trap-door" design, but its not like any Springfields I've ever seen either (I also once owned a 45-70 Springfield).
Something that interesting might be worth a letter with accompanying photos to the NRA's magazine, "American Rifleman". Their staff is quite knowledgeable when it comes to odd finds in the firearms world. I'll do some more research in my own books to see if I come up with anything.
This site will show you what a Lee-Enfield looks like:

Re: Some info about this gun
You know I get American Rifleman every month and I never even though about doing that (man do I feel dumb ).
I am sure that it is foreign made.
Re: Some info about this gun
Send me a pm with any words or markings that are on it. I've been looking ever since I read your post, but can't find anything like it. Can you tell: what caliber, centerfire or rimfire, single shot or repeater?

NRA would be a great way to go in finding out about it.
Re: Some info about this gun
did you ever find anything out? and...... do you think that your lee-enfield is the only one made?? Just because you own one doesnt mean that all are particular to that model. lee-enfield produced guns for so many different countries in so many different makes/models/finishes it is ridiculous.
Re: Some info about this gun
sorry to double post, but if you want to find your gun here is another good place to look.
