Gate City vs. Graham
I have spent some time on the Jerry Kilgore website, basically trying to see why Kilgore was unsuccessful last November. I came across this...
"The tallest town has been laid low by the loss of one of the true great men of this part of Virginia: Glynn Carlock. Coach Carlock was the longtime sideline general of the Graham G-Men, and I don't think anyone who played against him, or simply watched him coach, will ever forget him. He is a member of the Virginia High School Sports Hall of Fame, a well deserved honor. As a Gate City alum, I can certainly remember plenty of tough games against Coach Carlock . Without him, football season in Southwest Virginia will never be the same. Coach, you'll be missed.
Did Gate City used to play Graham?

Re: Gate City vs. Graham
My gosh man when they were AA.

Re: Gate City vs. Graham
Graham vs GC was a stapel until GC droped to A and Graham droped them
-
Re: Gate City vs. Graham
Graham doesn't play any A teams do they.

Re: Gate City vs. Graham
From what was said during the preseason at the scrimmage that GC and Graham may play again soon due to them having a new coach...Nothing set in stone but I would love to renew this rivalry...Great hard hitting game between two teams that really have respect each other programs.

Re: Gate City vs. Graham
Yeah, Graham and GC goes back to the 70's and the old Southwest District days. Would love to play the G-Men again. One of the most respected programs in the state. And might I add Coach Carlock was a heck of a Coach and earned plety of respect in his own right.

Re: Gate City vs. Graham
Would love to see Graham-Gate City re-new the rivalry...keep your fingers crossed....

Re: Gate City vs. Graham
I'm not so sure the rivalry would be what you remember . None of the kids playing now were part of that era . Their Dads or old ex-players or older fans but not todays kids . I don't mean to belittle the old rivalry and mutual respect of the programs , I just think it would take a couple or more years to get it rekindled.

Re: Gate City vs. Graham
It would mean more to the fans at the beginning than the players only because they haven't played in so long. However, the interest would be from two of the better football programs on this end of the state renewing competition after fifteen years or so. Coldest football game I ever went to was at Mitchell Stadium when I was a student- still remember that.

Re: Gate City vs. Graham
The last time they played was 2000. Todays kids were pretty young but I'm sure a few of them may remember. But if they don't it wouldn't take them long to get back in the groove

Re: Gate City vs. Graham
Absolutely, after talking to dads and older brothers, I'm sure there would be a lot of excitement. Did they play in 2000 in playoffs or just a non district game?
-
Re: Gate City vs. Graham
They played several years regular season in the 90's until 2000 and met several times also in the playoffs. We played twice in 2000.
-
Re: Gate City vs. Graham
I remembered playing them every year when we were in the SWD, but after going to the Highlands I couldn't remember much. I didn't keep up too much during most of the nineties.

Re: Gate City vs. Graham
I think around 94 the series was renewed. Follow link and click on football, you'll find much info in the electronic scrapbook.

Re: Gate City vs. Graham
Boy i remember we lost a hard nose game in 1978. The ground was hard as a rock and there were no hot water after to take a shower. I feel like Graham & GC very similar programs.
-
Re: Gate City vs. Graham
I remember that one too. I believe my butt froze to the stands! Bluefield amd Radford are the two coldest places I've ever been to a game!
-
Re: Gate City vs. Graham
I will give Graham a vote on that. Their playoff game with Tazewell this year was freezing. Its the first game I have wore gloves on the field, and still felt like a chunk of ice.
-
Re: Gate City vs. Graham
I'll agree that Radford game was the coldest game I've ever been too I think...Hot Chocalate was gone way before the game started...Man it was cold.
-
Re: Gate City vs. Graham
I would have figured hot chocolate would have frozen before you got back to the stands anyways.

Re: Gate City vs. Graham
Hurley is the coldest place I have ever played. It gets cold as heck there even at the beginning of the season.
