The U, The U, The U is on fire...
Dang did LSU drub them. Miami fell victim to the LSU curse, which is when an LSU backup quarterback has to play in a big game, they look all-world (see UT/LSU a few years back).
When Miami beat Va Tech so bad this year, I think I said they could not play much better. I have now decided they sold their souls to the devil to win that game, and outside of a little satanic assist, they never did look as good all year.

Re: The U, The U, The U is on fire...
The Bad Boys from Da U didn't even win the fight after the game. A couple of the got knocked around as much as the team did during the game.

Re: The U, The U, The U is on fire...
Yeah it wasnt even a fight, it was all a misunderstanding where Hester and Bowe were playing around, everyone thought it was a fight and started throwing helmets. Really dumb, but all just a misunderstanding.
-
Re: The U, The U, The U is on fire...
Wasn't really that disappointed in the loss last night. However, the U did stomp Virginia Tech at Blacksburg, and that makes this season somewhat of a success to me.
-
Re: The U, The U, The U is on fire...
whatever...we all know the VT game doesnt mean anything to "true" miami fans
-
Re: The U, The U, The U is on fire...
It really doesnt lol. It was a nice win but look at it this way.
The canes won in blacksburg in 2005, tech was probably the better team, miami went on to lose 2 games where the hinges basically came off.
You look at 2003, Miami was the better team, lost big time at tech(same problems as now though unfortunately) and tech goes on to lose every game with the exception of a one point win against temple. Basically both games proved meaningless and we are at the same crossroads as we were.
Ask me the game I want to win though and its definietely the FSU game.

The ACC-3

have I missed something?

Re: The U, The U, The U is on fire...
The cup is going to go to the conference who has the best bowl record. Nothing else really matters.
-
Re: The U, The U, The U is on fire...
Florida State the ACC champ got demolished by the Florida Gators, and the Gators are considered down.
Miami the best team in ACC imo, got drilled by LSU with their second string QB in.
The SEC has the all around best talent among all the teams in the conference, the ACC is, and has been dominated by FSU for many years. Now the Chokies and the Hurricanes come in and the ACC is world beaters, oh bout forgot mighty Boston College.
GO SEC AND ROLL TIDE!!!!!!!!!
-
Re: The U, The U, The U is on fire...
I guess it really doesn't matter at the end of the day, since neither the mighty SEC or the ACC have a team playing for the National Title (the only game that really matters). You guys can chest thump about the SEC all you want, but Alabama is the only club from the SEC with more titles than the Canes. All of these SEC teams with deep histories of football going back 100 years did less in that 100+ years than Miami did in one decade (except Bama). Heck, FSU has more bling than most SEC clubs.
-
Re: The U, The U, The U is on fire...
FSU had three games they had to win all year to go to the National Championship game, Miami, Florida, and UVA sometimes. Granted Miami and Florida are no slouches and you deserve wherever you go if you beat both of those teams, but the ACC was pretty much a joke, Miami, Boston College, and Va Tech makes the ACC a stronger conference but the conference as a whole is not as competitive as the SEC, nor as athletic as a conference as a whole. BUT this is just my opinion.
-
Re: The U, The U, The U is on fire...
The ACC has better athletes, the SEC has better football players.

No matter what the temperature is in Miami, it's still 27 to 7 in Blacksburg.
Plus Miami's beaten VT 4 out of the last 6 and still lead the overall series between the two teams. I'd say we still have room to talk when it comes to VT head-to-head against Miami...I'll take the Canes and play the percentages.

Re: The U, The U, The U is on fire...
I've always said people should support who they want but its really sad to see people from SWVA supporting teams from Florida or California or wherever...I wonder if other areas have as many fans who don't support their local teams as we do here in SWVA? I don't mind Va Cavalier fans so bad because hey atleast we are in Va but all these Miami and FSU fans is really confusing.
Conference Record:
Miami 7 wins
Tech 7 wins

Re: The U, The U, The U is on fire...
Virginia Tech didnt even have a football team in the 80s when I became a cane fan. Miami and Florida State revolutionized college football in that era where speed was introduced to destroy inferior wishbone horsecrap that the big 8 put on the field. To an even greater extent, what kid would want to be a fan of a trashy team like virginia tech or virginia when Howard Schnellenberger and Earl Morrell were introducing Quarterback U and probably the only pro style offense in college football at the time. What kid didnt want to be the next Jim Kelly or Bernie Kosar? What kid didnt want to break on the ball quicker than a blitzkrieg through poland and take one to the house while high stepping like Deion Sanders. Those dudes made college football exciting when it was real dull. Thats why Im not a tech fan or a virginia fan.
I think Blue would agree with me too, if I wasnt a cane fan, I would be a nole fan. If he wasnt a nole fan he would be a cane fan(if smarty would let him).

Re: The U, The U, The U is on fire...
Better to like a team from another state for over 20 years and be loyal to them than to jump on a bandwagon for another in-state team almost solely due to the success of a lefty from the other side of the state...most of your VT fanbase that have loaded up on the wagon here recently have maybe 6-8 years worth of history that they've seen and followed with their squad, me, I've seen Miami since '83. 22 years of my life.
It's kind of like Redskins fans asking Carolina or Dallas fans around here why they don't like their "regional" team. I'm a 49ers fan myself...at least I can like a team on their own merits, not because of their proximity to my abode. That Va Tech being "SWVA's team" is a played out & lame attempt at flaming--I'll support any kid that goes up there from around here, but that doesn't mean I have to like the rest of the team that's from Newport News & Hampton or whereever else.
Besides...who cares about that conference record thing you've got up there...if you want to talk team to team, head to head, Miami's got that matchup on lock if you want to look at recent history for about the past 5 or so years. Then let's look at the overall--still Miami. VT's a good program, I've never said they're not, but Miami's an elite program, regardless of the hard times they're probably going to fall on given all of the coaching changes...and that's the difference for me. Miami's a great program with a really good history over the last quarter of a century, VT's a rising one with maybe 10 years max of successful history. Everyone's gotta start somewhere though, and competing every year is the beginning. VT's there to compete in the top 10 for the most part unless something happens...which is highly commendable, but still not enough to make me turn by back on 22 years of loyalty to UM's football program, even if VT is just up the road on 81.

If I wasn't a Canes fan, I'd:
A) feel sorry for myself.
and
B) probably go for the Noles or another team who's style & history I like, like say Auburn, Michigan, or Notre Dame.
But thank God I'm a Canes fan--even through all the rough times we're in right now and getting ready to go through w/all the changes. That's called loyalty people--I've now been through probation, 5 MNC's, and a few overhauls of the coaching staff.

And thusly why I'm a Cane. I knew that mentioning ND would get you riled automatically.
BUT--if it were between being a ND fan or an OSU* fan, I'd either choose death or ND, but never OSU*.
-
Re: The U, The U, The U is on fire...
I cheered hard for OSU yesterday, not because I like them, but I really do love Ginn and Holmes, they are monsters. I hate ND more than any team, I would never cheer for them unless it helped the canes.
ND vs UF is impossible, I even cheer for the frickin vols against the gators.
-
Re: The U, The U, The U is on fire...
I've never liked tOSU*...hate them with a passion (thusly me saying that Michigan would be a possible replacement if the Canes didn't exist).
My main reasoning for liking ND would be due to my years of enjoyment watching Montana play for San Fran, and due to liking the running styles of Ricky Watters, Jerome Bettis, Rodney Culver, and Reggie Brooks. But that'd be about it.

I was always a big fan of Cris Carter at Ohio State. I liked Galloway quite a bit too, but never cared much for Glenn or George.

Re: The U, The U, The U is on fire...
Now I liked George--I remember him trouncing all over Tennessee his senior year in the Citrus Bowl. Loved his running style in college and the NFL...he's about the only tOSU* alum I can admit to liking.
Speaking of tOSU* RB's, Clarett made out like a bandit huh?
btw--where'd you come up with that lil rhyme? Make that up or is it attributable to NJ, Gables, or stormy?
-
Re: The U, The U, The U is on fire...
I just made it up. You said something about going through 35402952 coaching staffs, probation, and all of that so it was fitting.
I hope Clarett didnt do it, but the story sounds pretty damning against his defense.

Re: The U, The U, The U is on fire...
I guess you guys have your reasons...there was a time when Miami and FSU were after thoughts in college football as well and I wonder how many folks in the Tallahassee and South Florida areas "jumped on the bandwagon" in the early 80's? Sure you have a lot more vocal support from Tech fans in the last 15 years or so, success brings that out naturally...but I know alot of guys from around here including myself who were going up and watching Tech play in the days of Will Furrer, Vaugh Hebron, Eugene Chung, all the way back to Bruce Smith...so not everyone became fans when Vick came to Tech...as a matter of fact he and is brother are the only 2 QB's in the last 15 years at Tech that I have not seen play in person(De'Shazo, Druckenmiller, Noel, Randall, Furrer, among others I have seen).
I really respect Bobby Bowden and the program he built at FSU and he is a really great guy...I also respect Shnelly and how he brought Miami out of the doldrums of college football to be a national powerhouse but ever since Jimmy Johnson took over I have not cared much for the Canes and even though I like Larry Coker and think he is a good guy it doesn't seem like things have changed much from the days of thug ball down there...but hey you like who you like and I will say this...when the Canes play the Vols I am a Miami fan without a doubt.
-
Re: The U, The U, The U is on fire...
You know, if Clarett would have gotten that 40 time down, he wouldn't have had to worry about this whole thing. I'm not saying he would have been a Denver Bronco, I'm saying he would have had enough separation speed to keep running from the cops instead of turning himself in.
I'm telling you now, if Clarett says Gary Coleman did it, we may want to consider that alternative--they're almost twins.

I know not everyone became fans of VT PMV (post Mike Vick), but about 60-70 percent of the fan base could probably be traced back that far and no further back. In bold up there is what I respect greatly--you don't know how many VT fans that don't know about guys like De'Shazo, Druckenmiller, Bruce Smith, Browning Wynn, Ken Oxendine, Vaughn Hebron, etc...guys that were either major contributors to VT's program, pretty good NFL players, or both, and I think that's a damn shame.
Now I don't claim to know every player from 1983 on...mega's got me beat when it comes to the early years of Miami football, but I still love the squads and the style of play from that point on. I honestly could brush up more, but I know about Miami's history than lots of VT fans know about their own. That's what being a fan is all about. Know the team, root for the team, and know it's history--whether it's humble beginnings to greatness or consistent greatness over a long period of time, it doesn't matter. Just know it if you want to proclaim yourself a fan--that's all I ever ask of anyone else.

Re: The U, The U, The U is on fire...
I agree with your assessment about alot of people becoming Tech fans in the late 90's and later...I would guess its a little lower than your assessment of 60 or 70 percent but its still a fair assumption that the Hokies picked up a good number of (so called) fans during the last 7 or 8 years. For us that have been following their program for a good deal longer than that its actually a little frustrating because we get grouped into the "fair weather" fan pigeon hole as well...well sad to say I didn't save any of my ticket stubs from the 80's or early 90's but I know I was there and know I have been a fan long before starship 7 arrived. I heard my dad say something about going to games all the way back when Carroll Dale played so he definitely has more knowledge than I do but I can go back to the early 80's at least when talking about Tech football and I also have a little knowledge on their basketball program as well.
I followed Miami more in the 80's and early 90's than I have in more recent years and I remember alot about their program from those days because they along with Nebraska, FSU, Notre Dame, Oklahoma and a few others(Alabama, LSU..etc) epitomized success in that era and I remember hoping Tech would be part of that group one day...well those days have arrived but its not as sweet as I thought it would be and part of that is due to the "fair weather" fans coming on board and causing all of from back in the day to get categorized in with them. I'm sure Canes fans from the 60's and 70's felt the same way when the 80's rolled around.

Re: The U, The U, The U is on fire...
That was back in the old days. You know, when they got by with all the recruiting violations. I'm surprised the NCAA didn't take back some of those. What a fall. All those titles and now they can't win a conference title.
