no he got the 500th
Congratulations to Coach Wilson.
I talked to Jake Neely last summer about a JIB game , years ago. I think I watched Stan's first regional championalship, in the snow at TW. Man, that was along time ago. Congrats, coach, I'm gonna look him up, and ask him about the first one, the reg that is.
congrats to you coach wilson.
Congratulations to Coach Wilson. 500 in VA is like about eight or nine hundred in TN.
Stan the Man, the is none greater. Don't let the walk fool ya, he can still throw it down.
might believe ya if he didnt smoke 8 packs a day
haha..he tells all of his players that when he was in high school that everytime he shot it he knew it was going in
raiders lost to lee high tonight by 3
close game all night
Grats Coach Wilson.
Don't worry guys, Stan could take about 98% of you to the hole and make you look like a milk maid on the basketball court. For us other 2%, we don't need to even lace up our sneakers.
I thought it was hilarious that one time he was challenged by one of his players at a game of 21, the player let coach have the ball "because he was old." Stan never lost the ball. Played 3 and back (3 foul shots, then you get the ball again.
The kid who challenged him was probably one of the best athletes Norton has ever seen.
I'm guessing he showed Reecie or Doug then who's "The Man"
Actually, Jake Neeley told me that story. And it was him that Coach beat.
People underestimate the old man, but he was good.
Sadly enough, if you ask coach wilson who was the best athlete he ever had, he will say Pat Teasley. This question was asked a few weeks ago and thats what coach said.
He was a great athlete, just to lazy. What was even more sad about Pat is he could have been a GREAT QB if he would of not been so lazy.
Hes was so lazy he wouldnt even get a gun with a clip.
Mega please, for the love of everything holy, tell me you're kidding.
There is no way that he could compare to either of the Neeleys, Campbells, or Boo. I think Russell Livingston was the best basketball player to ever play for Burton, but he wasn't the most athletic, he worked his rear end off to make himself that good.
Was there that much improvement in Teasley after I left?
haha that's pretty funny. Yeah he was better than Boo.
Im serious man, Wilson said Teasley was the most athletic player he ever had. Thats not saying he was the best player he ever had, just the most athletic.
Tom tom could have been good as well, sure did look like a D-1 prospect that night they played Council in FB had what 6 TD's that game? Scored 2 on D ran back a punt and Kickoff and Played TB never seen that from anyone
Ask Kuczko, Jimbo, Bruce, they all say Pat was best athlete period, if he would have done it even 50% of the time.
Sad about TomTom, not only in football but basketball as well. Before he got kicked off he was averaging a triple double.
Campbells are Neelys boys.
Didn't Boo throw a rock @ someone and get suspended his last game, when he had 999 points?
I thought Issac Adkins was a pretty good shooter myself.
Yeah there dad is Jake.
Boo, I don't remember him getting suspended for anything.
Issac was probably the best shooter that Norton has ever had or will ever have. He was a great player, he could also throw it down at will.
Reggie threw a rock and got into some trouble I think, but he played his last game...He was sitting on 999, had 4 personal fouls, got a technical and that was the end of it. It was against kelly at coeburn during the lpd tournament.
Boo scored something like 1300, he was never in any kind of trouble, he was a pretty respected person in the community.
Yeh, I guess athleticism runs in the family.
I dunno, maybe I'm biased, but I'd have to say the all-around best athlete to go through Norton is Major Griffey. Then Reecie. I know not a lot of people agree with that, but in Basketball Reecie had better people around him, people like Shrader, Russell, and Huck.
Major was amazing at football and track, and I want to say he scored 1,000 points in B-ball?
I'll 1 up ya John Livingston.
I've seen a lot of athletes come through this league. I'd rate Gene Forney as good as any athlete to come out of Norton.
How about a male Track team with only 4 members winning the LPD track meet?
How about a female track team at Appalachia winning Region D with 4 track members.
Lol and one is my Dr

don't forget that when Russell was playing that Jerome Emershaw ran the point I think
Ive played against all of those guys, Reecie, Schrader, Russell, John Livington, Major.......none of them hold a candle to Reecie. He was the epitomy of athletic, inside, outside, jumping abilty, ball handling, there was nothing he couldnt do when he wanted to do it. He is the best basketball player at Burton that I have seen in my lifetime and its not even close.
Now Im not old enough to see the Neely's, Gail Livingston, Greg Adkins, etc but Reecie outshines the rest of them by a mile. 3 State apperances in 4 years including 2 final four apperances gives his arguement even more credibility.
the "Reecie" years were awesome to watch.
Reecie was lazy also. When he would get tired of beating on you, he would just hit you with a Caddy.
J.I. Burton boys varsity basketball coach Stan Wilson would have preferred to pick up his 500th career coaching win at Norton.
Getting it at Wise may have been the second-best thing.
"If we couldn't get it at home, Wise has been a pretty good rivalry for us over the years," said Wilson, who reached the milestone in last Saturday's 59-54 Lonesome Pine District win at J.J. Kelly.
Wilson went into last season only nine victories shy of 500. But a rash of injuries before and during the season, as well as several key no-shows, resulted in a 6-15 finish that was substantially below anyone's prior expectations.
"I was thinking I'd probably get it last year. Then things fell apart," Wilson said. "It's taken so long, the closer I got, the more it became something that stood out in my head.
"Still, I was more interested in beating Wise than getting my 500th. For us to be 2-0 in the district with two on the road ... in the LPD, that's pretty good."
Because teams are limited to 22 regular season games per season in Virginia, hitting 500 career victories in VHSL basketball competition is an even more significant accomplishment than in adjoining states, where more regular season games are allowed.
Another mark of distinction for Wilson is that he has earned all his career coaching wins at the same school. He took over the J.I. Burton program in 1969-70 - his first season as head coach, anywhere.
"I've always been satisfied here at Norton and people always seem to have been satisfied with me," Wilson said. "Of course, you never know how many attempted coups there may have been. But it's never happened."
Wilson's association with J.I. Burton basketball began a decade earlier than that. He played center at the Norton high school between 1958 and 1963, going on to play his college basketball at Tusculum College.
Wilson's jersey is retired at the school, jointly honoring his career as both a player and a coach. The gymnasium was named after him in 1995.
After Tuesday's 60-46 win at Clintwood, the Raiders improved to 4-3 overall, 3-0 in LPD play. The Raiders are off to a slow start due to the football team's Group A, Division 1 runner-up finish, which kept most of Wilson's key players out of the gym until late December.
Slow start or no, Burton is once again a significant team in the LPD regular season race. Gate City, which handed Coeburn its first district loss Tuesday night, is the only other LPD squad that has yet to drop a league contest.
Senior guard Lorenzo Miles, who missed all of last season due to ACL surgery, is a big difference-maker for the Raiders. He scored 38 points against Clintwood, for instance, but he's a lot more than a scoring engine.
"He opens up a wide variety of things on the floor," Wilson said. "He can pass the ball. He can get the break going. And he can get in your jock, defensively."
Freshman guard Jaycob Coleman, sophomore forward Pat Begley and big junior post Adam Middleton have been particularly pleasant surprises for Wilson in their varsity season starts. The midseason addition of forward Ethan Stewart, as well as the expected return of guard Jay Coleman will only make things better.
"We've got kids working harder than any I've had in a good while, team-wise," Wilson said. "They like to get in there and mix it up. They like contact under the boards. I don't see anything but good things happening with them."
Of course, "good things" have been happening with Norton basketball for quite some time now.
"I think back on last year when we won six games," Wilson said. "Each time there was high-fiving and congratulations. The kids were tickled to death. Just six times.
"The kids I've had ... we've done it 500 times. That puts it in a little perspective."
My grandpaw has told me stories of when Wilson played. He says he was force to be reckon with back in his playing days.
