you really hate Burton don't ya???
yes I do..Never have liked them and never will like them...
sour grapes huh?
Haha if my high school team consistently got beaten by a school less than half its size in most fields of competition, I'd be pretty bitter as well.
Gotta love KK, cough I mean, JJ Kelly.
ah high school rivalrys. good times.
i hope wise does win, cause you need a damn haircut anyways
they sure know how to play girls sports though.
and baseball.
Actually, in girls sports obviously JJK dominates the Raiders, but in boy's basketball, it's usually about dead even, in baseball, Norton has been our biatch year after year (even with the great Shupe at the Raider helm) I know boys tennis has been good at JIB, but JJK's boys golf team has a state title in the case. I don't know where you're getting that from
Let's review these fields of competition and give the edge
Baseball-JJK
Boys B-ball-even
Softball-JJK
Volleyball-JJK
Girls tennis- JJK
Boys tennis-JIB
Football-JIB
Golf-JJK
Girls B-ball-JJK
Track/ Cross country-?
6 out of 8 in favor of the INJUNS is hardly consistent domination in most sports
Burton made a state appearance in volleyball the season before last and had beaten Kelly a ton of times, Bright barely has any losses against Kelly head to head.
Same with softball too, Bright has lost 2 games to JJK in something like 6 years. I think Brianna Bates won 1 game against Burton out of about 9 games.
Does Burton even have a golf team? I know a few guys play, but do they have a team? Honestly I dont have a clue outside of Caleb Crowder.
same with track, I dunno if they even have a team.
I would disagree with you about boys basketball though, how many district titles or lpd tournaments has Kelly won in the last 5 years? 10 years? 20 years?
I wouldn't say Burton has a track team.. last year.. they had one male runner and a couple of female runners..
I know about 3 years ago they had a very good track team whenever.. Aaron Hess, Justin Campbell, Dustin Blair and etc ran.. If im not mistaken they finished 2nd the the LPD and sent a majority of their team to the state meet..
Seems like 2 years ago Lorenzo Miles and Jordan Thacker ran in the NPI but they never came to another meet.. I guess Baseball played a factor in that. Im sure the Kelly Alum can tell you Mack Shupe didn't enjoy one of his baseball players playing multiple sports at the same time.. I only know of one who done it and that is Gabe Barnette. Baseball/Track at the same time..
Burton could probably challenge PV for the track title.. just not enough school interest.
In boys basketball when it was at it's peak, and the Raiders had the Tommy Shraders, Reecie Gravely's, Doug Campbell's, all those high-flying squads, as many times than not , Dave's boys slowed em down and beat em 55-52. We need a site with the series record between JJK-JIB (you'll find the Raiders haven't dominated). In softball, I know JJK has won more than twice against the Raiders as well. To question JJK's boys basketball titles in the last 20 years is a laugh. In volleyball, I gotta admit I am just now getting into it, but I couldn't remember the Raiders ever getting to state. Still, no dominance by the Raiders as was indicated in an earlier post
Kelly had a pair win state gold in track just a few years ago. Hubbard in boys high-jump, and Helton in girls high-jump. I thought that was pretty cool.
Yea.. Andrew Sturgill almost made it to the finals in the 100M the take the top 2 out of each heat and he got 3rd..
agreed i cant stand norton. but i aint going to shave my head ill just throw a party or something
I have no idea about Kelly beating Burton in softball under Sharpe or Volleyball under Walker, but I do know that since Bright has been coach of those teams, they have rarely lost in either sport. They went to state in volleyball two years ago and lost to northwood, gate city beat northwood in the finals.
I will give you credit about the basketball thing though, burton has lost a ton of to Kelly, it just seems when it comes to the big games, burton comes through with the big win, like in 96, I think the Balridge and McAmis team beat Burton 2 times in the regular season but when it came time to advance to region, Campbell and Adkins came through and beat them and ultimately went to state. Same thing happend in I think it was 02, Longworth's squad had beaten Burton both times during the regular season, Burton won the district tourney and went to regions with gate city.
I wasnt being a smartass when I was asking about the district titles and tournament titles, I was just asking an honest question because I have no idea. I can say that Burton has dominated the district tournament over the last 20 years, they have probably won close to half of them. Since Gate City joined the district things have changed, but I think we both know basketball isnt what it once was at either school. In past years Burton and Kelly were likely better than Gate City.
I'll be honest, I'll have to look at our banners to see in boys how many we have won in basketball, but I know we've done ok. I get lost sometimes looking at those 22 state titles we have at JJK -Just pickin' at you all a bit, but seriously: I sure miss the old days when JJK-JIB in basketball was a game. Gyms locked at 3 cause it was overflowing, JJK making money puttin' folks in the auditorium charging folks to see it on TV, ears ringing for days after the game (especially when it was in the crackerbox). Now it seems like it has just become another game
I agree, it really is just another game. I decided to watch the pats beat up on the jags instead of going to the game, that says alot.
I did the exact same thing man
That wasn't Doug and Ike against TJ, that would been the days of Boo.
It was Doug, Ike, and Mark Sturgill at Appy. Dax missed a shot to tie/win the game at the buzzer in the lpd tourney. It was def TJ's team because that was when he was fat and everyone got in trouble for yelling fat boy everytime he touched the ball.
Btw unchained, I talked to Bright tonight, he has lost 2 times in softball to Kelly and 3 times in volleyball. The three in volleyball were all this past season so hes lost the last 3 to them. He prides himself in beating Kelly, he understands the rivalry alot. He was actually Burton's point guard on the team with Schrader and Gravely. Back then guys like him were the 4th and 5th option and could still be the man to beat ya. All of those guys back then could beat ya, the bench warmers were better than 99% of the starters on teams today.
id like to see the basketball and baseball conferences be divided up like they are in football. Imagine how many titles teams like Burton, T.S., and Pound could have won.
gc would have about 8 titles in bball if that were the case
no they wouldnt either, Region A and B were just ridiculous back then. Fluvanna, Suffolk, and GW Carver would just rip teams to shreds. Carver became Magna Vista and I realize GC did beat them, but year end year out those teams on that end of the state were just destroying teams from this area. That is when this area was at their peak talent wise also.
i know for fact the years we went to the final four 3 out of 4 years we wouldve won all those...all the other schools wouldve been division 4
He right mega. In the late 90s, GC was in the state tourny around 4 or 5 times. Of course about all of those teams they faced (like Salem in the 99 finals) were almost double the size of GC.
Im not talking about the late 90s, hell single A in the late 90s was a joke, I played in the late 90s and council and haysi were as good as any team up state. Im talking about the late 80s/early 90s. Fluvanna would have blasted gate city, they had numerous D1 players on their team.
I thought Fluvanna was single A though? How would they have figured into the mix with GC?
By the way, what in the heck is a Flying Fluco anyway?!
They were(still might be). GC(I thought) was saying that had GC been in single A back then, then they would have several state titles. That may be true in the late 90s, but definitely not in the 80s and early 90s. Those guys had 5 Reecie Gravelys on their team.
Not to sound racist, but when you go up to state for basketball now, you get a chance to play a group of white guys for the title, it was the exact opposite end of the spectrum back then and the scores looked horrible. Fluvanna beat Gravely and Schrader's squad by over 30 and didnt give up more than 30. Thats when they played all 3 rounds of state at UVA and played AA at UVA too. You had like 16 games in 3 days, it was an awesome setting for the high school fans.
I have no idea what a fluco is, but those kids were flying around and dunking on everyone, so I have an idea where the "flying" part came from.
I remember RC girls going to the final four in 94 and Fluvanna girls warming up after words, but it may have been for AA. I was thinking they were A as well.
In 89 I believe RC went to the final four in mens and got blasted by Cumberland. RC had a real team, but I think it was 60+ to 9 at halftime. Just unreal.
Went and checked. Fluvanna is AA: Fluvanna County 1084
Yeah Cumberland had a good team back then too, they are located right near farmville. Im not sure when Fluvanna moved from A to AA, so many of those schools have either been reclassified or renamed. I would assume Suffolk is AA now too considering the size of the tidewater area.
The first state tourney I went to was in 87 I believe. Burton won their first game against Prince Edward then lost big to GW Carver(Magna Vista). Kelly lost to Middlesex, and Talford's Castlewood team lost to Windsor, they shut Talford down big time and that says alot.
Much agreed. Shoot those RC teams of the late 80s (as did many others around here) would put up 100 a couple to three times a season. I just wonder where those types of games have gone.
I guess the decline in school population has something to do with it, but at the same time, there probably isnt 1 player in the lpd that could start for any team in the area 15 years ago. The biggest difference is fundamentals, not many kids have them.
As Hank Hill would say:
"Its all them d@mn vidya games fault!"
Seriously, I don't think kids want to work for it as bad, or enjoy that aspect of it. Of course it is not only lacking at our high school level. It is even evident in the pros, and look at our frickin last Olympic team.
no...what i was saying is we would have won titles if it were split up like football because we wouldve been division 3 and all the teams we ever played in the final 4 were all division 4
Oh, I thought you meant D2 A like it is now. My bad.
TJ was there back in my day also. Who do you think started the chant of FatBoy anyway? I don't think Kelly beat us back then either.
TJ if your out there reading this, I'm sorry for calling you FatBoy back in the day.
lol yeah, when did he graduate like 96? 96 I because Burton went to state that year, then went to state in 97 which was Doug's senior season.
TJ played from 93-96 I would assume. Baldridge was the same age if Im not mistaken.
He would have to of graduated in 96 because he was at CVC playing ball Doug's senior year. I think it was the 95 season we missed state because Boo got thrown out of a game for hanging on the rim. It was the night he was only a few points away from breaking coach Wilsons single game scoring record.(that was a bad call by the ref)
Yeah I think that was against Ervinton....then we lost to Honaker.
