ETSU Bucs

After defeating Gardner-Webb 89-66 last night, the Bucs are back to .500 at 6-6. ETSU has won 5 in a row, and starting to play up to expectations.

I believe ETSU has plenty of time to turn this thing around.

ETSU needs to start looking around swva for player... they showed no interest in webb or mcmurray last year and those 2 player could turn that program around.. i dont understand their problems.. if they got some local kids besides knuckles they would have alot better attendance.. look at what webb is doing at appy state... he could have tore it up at etsu...

there is a good player that comes thru swva bout every 5 years...and by swva i mean wise, scott, dickenson, lee area...it is kinda hard to recruit because the competition in this area is very very weak. I mean when you got guys playing center who are 6'0 compared to some of those kids who play with point guards who are 6'4.

etsu showed a lot fo interest in Jesse last year and he actually was pretty close to committing and going there this fall...but C-N jumped in with a better offer...if ETSU is looking to become a better program, SWVA is not the place to be looking for prospects...if they wanna put some local seats in the stands then they can recruit some SWVA/NETN...but not if they wanna get to the next level

Exactly. Webb is doing well at Appy St. but he would not have tore it up at ETSU. He is in the right situation at Ap St. because they have no post players. If Tyler was at ETSU he would be getting sparing playing time more than likely behind Knuckles, Dillion Sneed, and Andrew Reed.

Webb would have tore it up at ETSU in his 4 yrs if he would have went there... i think appy states post players are a lot better than ETSU...webb would start over knuckls right now..

webb could start maybe in 2 years there...but let's be honest, while a very good player, he is only startin at appy state because of injuries

I will tell you that Webb would not start at ETSU this year. And ETSU does recute this area but a player the calaber of Silvers or Talford does not come through one of our school systems that often

J-Rod man, step back and look at things a little. Tyler is a very good player, but he is in the right situation at Appy State right now. Like I said, right now Tyler would be the 4th post player in rotation at ETSU, 3rd at best.

Now, by his junior year, yes Tyler would probably start at ETSU. Maybe a little as a sophomore, since Sneed, and Reed graduate this year. There is no way, I repeat, no way he would start over Brad. Tyler is good, but he is still a step below Knuckles level.

I know Tyler and his family didn't like the idea, but ETSU's proposal to redshirt Webb would have been great for him had he went to ETSU though. Since Tyler wanted playing time right away, he is in the right place. Appy State's post players are not that good, and the ones that are decent are injured, so it is a big door opening he has taken advantage of. I am glad he has been able to produce a little so far also.

The way I see it, any team that has Webb or Knuckles in their post is in trouble, they stink compared to most D1 players. Weather Webb starts or not, does it really matter lol.

Not really for a mid-major. Were not talking Indiana, Kentucky, Duke, or big schools like that now. Both Knuckles, and Webb have had success so far for each of their respective schools, and will continue to within their conferences.

I dunno, to me, I cant call ETSU a mid major. When I think of mid major, I think of the MAC, the WCC, and the MVC......I cant consider the southern conference to be a mid major, they are slightly better than the big south and almost the bottom of the barrel in D1.

Well, I don't know that they have a name of anything below mid-major unless it is D2, or D3. Also, ETSU is not in the SoCon in anymore, they are now in the A-Sun. Pretty much a lateral movement, although they were close to joining Conference USA I believe.

But with today's parity in college basketball, why can you not call the SoCon, or A-sun a mid-major. Their top schools can play, and defeat schools from major conferences. No different than the MAC, WCC, or MVC. Theirs not a huge difference between those schools.

The conferences I mentioned are powerhouse conferences, year in year out over the last 15 years or so. Other than Chattanooga in the late 90s, its been quite a while since any of those schools have had success. Charleston was pretty good in the Transatlantic. The winner of the atlantic sun will be lucky to have a winning record and there is not a team in the conference with any tournament success with the exception of ETSU, however that was nearly 15 years ago. The atlantic sun is about as good as the big south, I would guess both conferences will end up with a 16 seed and have the gun pointed right at them straight out of the box.

I would say that the athletic sun and southern conference are closer to D2 than midmajor, I could def see some D2 teams beating them, even on a consistent basis. You have D2 teams beating pac-10 teams these days so Im positive in my assessment.

That is sort of my point though. With so much parity, everything is mid-major. You use the analogy of D2 teams beating Pac-10, those teams would also be WCC, MAC, and most other conference teams also.

I am not saying those conferences are giant killers, but their top teams normally hold their own with other mid-major competition also. For instance, G-Webb was predicted to win, but they are in the middle of the A-Sun pack even though they defeated Minnesota, who barely lost to Wisconsin a top 20 ranked school.

There is just so much parity now a days its ridiculous.

I agree there is parity, Im just saying that in the food chain scheme of things

1)Major conferences
2)If you want to use the word Mid Major, Mid Major elites (MAC, Horizon, WCC, MVC, etc)
3)Mid Major bottom feeders(Southern conference, Big South, Atlantic Sun, Northeast)

I can sort of agree with that. The worst part about the parity is that the top teams are not better, or near as good as what they were in the 90s. Basketball as whole is seriously below the levels it used to be.

Agreed, I think you can pin that on the early entries to the nba draft. At least those guys have to come to college for a year now.

That definitely put a dent in things. But overall the skill level has receded drastically. Much like you have pointed out even on our local level.

i dont think the overall skill level has decreased in the ncaa as much as it is, there's not any one team who is "stacked"

All the top teams used to be "stacked" though. The midrange jumper is a lost art it seems like. Look at the free throw percentages across the country. It speaks volumes in my opinion.

that's what im sayin though, the teams all used to be stacked and the mid-majors and the bottoms of the big conferences used to struggle to find talent...now it seems like a whole bunch of schools are on the same playing field

IMO it's because of the NCAA tournament and the number of teams that get in, that has helped lots of teams sell to families the opportunity to play in the big dance
