This Forum
First off, I'm alive. I just had to take a break from this thing for awhile. This forum is a great place for everyone. I've been on here a long time, back to the days when I was in 7th and 8th grade posting on the old board. Very few of those people are still around Nola stands out the most. What is said on this forum is not like most sports boards. For instance, I post on a Maryland sports board. I can post that my name is Darrell-Dingus Ely and very few if anyone will know me. Here, everybody knows who I am, due to the small size of our communities. Is that a good thing? In some ways yes, I've met alot of friends from this board, I actually live with a fellow forum member now Cuban Wizard. In some ways however it is bad, it's all about how you appear and seem. There are people in every town that feel the same way I do about things but will not put them on the forum cause so and so down the street will find out. I think thats sad, most of you know my situation and what happened. I sat down and thought about everything and came to a few conclusions. One, I'll probably never be able to teach at PV little lone coach due to my opinions. While at the same time hundreds of others have the same viewpoint. I have people come up and tell me they do but cant put it up due to fear of losing their job, hurting their kids, (which I think they are being hurt even more if you dont say anything), and other stuff. I vowed to myself after we lost the state title game in 2004 that I would one day win that game as a coach, depending on what day it is now depends on how I feel about that. I'd like to but really and truly I often wonder if I would be given the opportunity around here. Mainly due to this board. I love this place though, it gives me a place to vent and talk to people about sports. You've got some smart people on here in regards to sports Mega, VTGAL, Biggin, GCDEVIL22, Moonlight, Nola, A_Football_Fan (even though he likes Duke) and others know an unreal amount about different sports. They know the X's and O's and the players.
I really dont understand why many are leaving this place, well yes I do. It's political and religous. This is one of the greatest area's in the world imo and I love living here but at the same time you have some of the most closed minded people I've ever met. It's mainly the older generation, some people my age feel the same way but it gets less and less. You've got people criticizing others for political and religous views when deep down inside who's to say any of us are right. I'm liberal and will never vote for a republican in anything above school board. I dont believe in censorship and believe that for the most part our country is being taken in a direction of brainwashing. Now, most of the people around here disagree with me on that but thats fine, I'm not going to leave a message board because some dude in Pound thats on the LPD Forum doesn't believe in gay rights or that he approves of lesbians kissing each other. Thats absurd, I do agree with some of the points made on here, many people on here are or are becoming closed minded. Honestly, for the last little bit there are very few people's post on here I pay attention to on either the sports or non-sports forum. I guess what I'm saying is I'm all for religon and doing good for kids but grow up, you live your way and I'll live mine. I dont try to force my beliefs down your throats so please dont push yours down mine. This talk of protecting kids is for the birds, evil is in the world people open your eyes. This little sports forum isn't going to corrupt Johny. Johny would have to type in http://www.hostboard.com/LDPforum/ub...&Board=LDP to see two girls kissing each other. Thats awful isn't it but stop and think if he types in http://www.whitehouse.com he'll see fully nude women kissing each other. You have to take the good and the bad of the internet, it's up to the parents to raise their kids and steer them away from wrong. Lets be honest people, what teenage kid isn't going to want to look at pornography? Some people need to wake up and realize the world they live in, I'd rather have them looking at two chicks making out on a sports forum than out having un-protected sex wouldn't you?
I'm off my soapbox for now, I've got to go to another class. I hope the long standing members of this forum keep this thing going, and I know they will. To the old timers who are wanting to leave, I hope you reconsider and realize that this is a message board not life and death. I also urge to check out other sports message boards with non sports forums and check out the dialogue and nature of the boards. Here is the link to the Maryland site I visit. I'm linking to their version of the non-sports forum, I hope you realize that our board really isn't all that bad compared to others. Maryland Sports (Non Sports Forum)
Lastly, I'd like to open up the idea of having a forum meeting at the LPD Tournament Semi-Final Games. If your interested I'm sure we can find a place to meet. Wheww, now I'm done.

Re: This Forum
Kids who come here have access to the internet or they would be here first off...They have access to the internet then they have access to the world and all the problems in the world not to mention the access to billions of websites all over the world from different meanings...What I mean by that is they have access to porn, other sites that have cussing involved, and sites that show killing and such just to name a few...This place is calm compared to what they can view on the world wide web...Although we may not all agree if you have a kid and he can access the web anywhere you can bet he/she has seen cuss words, nudity, and other stuff you may not have wish for them to see.

But would you want a 4 or 5 year old seeing nudity or half naked girls? I have a 4 year old son and a 5 year old daughter that I would rather shield away from such stuff atleast untill they are teenagers. Almost always altleast one of them is sitting with me at the pc when I am home and here at work if someone had seen me looking at the pic of the two girls kissing I would be fired for sexual harassment. That is if the person that sees me takes offense to it. Thats just how strict my employer is.

Re: This Forum
I think what trying to say is know your situation. I mean shoot if I've been trying to find a page before in a totally clean environment, and the pop up monsters show and when I say show, I mean show...well everything.
I think most people know that sometimes even on good sites you might have something not so good.
-
Re: This Forum
as far as that goes there are also parental controls, my child's computer has to have a password for sites that I have not approved....but what happens when Johnny comes and sits in daddy's lap while he is talking? But what is considered appropriate? What is considered crude, rude, lude whatever. That seems to be up more to personal opinion than a specific guideline.

Re: This Forum
Thats kind of my point. The 2 girls kissing is shown on tv, granted at night but I've seen it, and if I can be turning channels and see it, what prevents kids from doing likewise.
I mean if you talk to some people in the field, you have that or worse going on in the elementary schools fairly regularly now. Kids doing things that I still dont think I'd be brave enough to do.

Re: This Forum
If a child comes up to you at the computer, and you're on this board or somewhere else, afraid they're going to see something they're not supposed to, then I have a SIMPLE solution:
Look up. Now look to the right. No, not that far--upper-right hand corner of the browser. See the lil underscore looking thing? That's called a minimize bar. Now, I'm going to tell you to click on it, and it will go away--but not for forever...just down to the taskbar, which is at the bottom of your screen. Now after I tell you to click that button, look down at your taskbar, and then all you'll have to do is click on where it says "Welcome...", to bring the screen back up. Now click it.
Welcome back!!! Now either you saw your desktop, another program that was open, or another browser window when you minimized the window. That was rather easy, wasn't it? Painless? Not time consuming?
Now let's say you're done with it and want to close the browser with something objectionable on it...see the X just to the right of the minimize bar? Click it.
Okay, now you're back and you're cussing me because the browser went away, seemingly forever. You had to navigate all the way back to this thread to see the end.
USE THE MINIMIZE AND CLOSE BUTTONS IF YOU DON'T WANT YOUR KIDS TO SEE WHAT YOU'RE SURFING FOR ON THE INTERNET. YOU AS AN ADULT CAN CONTROL THAT MUCH.

Should be no need to do that on a local highschool message board.

Should be no need to do it on www.whitehouse.com or a poser Disney website either--but it happens. And that's a really simple way to get rid of the problem w/o disabling avatars--take the browser, minimize it, and pay attention to your child if they come up to you. Go to a website they want to go to, spend some time with them, and then they'll want to go off and play something else after a while. You can put down the browser until you're ready to begin posting again not in plain sight of the kids. It's not too much to ask.

Re: This Forum
If they don't see it at home who's to say they won't see it at a friends house, neighbors or babysitters...If they go over to Timmy's house and he has a PC withut parental controls to block websites then what's stopping him/her? As I said you can't be with them 24/7...Times have changed since when we were growing up...Some will have to face it they will see it no matter what unless you keep your child locked up in a room with access to noone for the rest of his childhood.

Re: This Forum
I am not a big fan of the overly sugestave Avatares but a year or two back when Madana and Spears had that big kiss on TV it was replayed on a national news several dozen times and not nesaceraly at night.
And would that Avatar have been OK if it had been a Guy and a Girl?
You know the Avatars could be like the simming pool "No Public displays of affection"
-
Re: This Forum
Tell you the truth I hate public shows of affection.
-
Re: This Forum
Wow good point Counts...that was definitely there for any kids to see.
I didn't even think about it.

Re: This Forum
Well that is a bit different since it was nudity (even with the strange pearicing) and all the news replays did blur out the offinding body bart

Re: This Forum
soooo since there are bad places in the world wide web....since there are things kids should not see that means we can say whatever whenever...kinda like the old if your friend jumped off a bridge business

Re: This Forum
I think he was joking about that biggin...lol

Re: This Forum
You know what is real funny. You go to England or any other European country and you will see nudity all that. You will see younger kids drink wine and such. I've been lucky enough to vist London and see their culture. They are not ashame of it, they are comfortbale about it. I guess what I am trying to say is we "america" seem to be so uptight about [censored]. We worry about what other people think then what we think about ourself. How is it we are ok with someone painting a nude pic of a girl or guy, but we are offend by a nude pic? Yes it is a painting but didn't the artist use a model? As far as the cussing goes. Well you can say it's a part of life now. It's almost as it is part of the english language. But that's my opinion, I guess lol.

I don't see how that's like the "friend jumped off a bridge" thing.
I feel we shouldn't have to censor ourselves when if kids see the things they could see on this forum...and if that's the worst thing they ever see growing up...then they're pretty sheltered. Just like PVfan said, this is a TAME message board compared to others out there...
I'd honestly like to see everyone on here post on at least 2 other message boards either having to do w/your favorite sports teams or with a hobby you have. Bigger message boards with a more national following are worse than this one. Sometimes you don't know how good what you've got is until you compare it with what you could have.
-
Re: This Forum
what I interpreted from you was that since it is out there then it is ok and that is like the bridge...my friend did it so can I....I know what you are saying is true, there is a whole lot worse out there, I agree, don't make any of it right does it.

Re: This Forum
No but myself nor others are responsible for what else is out there to be found out on the internet...and we're not responsible for the monitoring of anyones' children. The internet is one of the few places where freedom of speech is a lot more free than anywhere else...less fear of censorship. And I'm not talking about porn, cussing, or violent argument. I'm talking political debate, religious discussion, free-sharing of ideas. However...the good goes with the bad. If you like the good freedoms then the bad comes along with it. It's like a filter. If you filter out all the bad things, but the filter's too small, then you lose some of the good things. If your filter is big enough to let all the good things through, then some bad things are bound to get through as well. It's a matter of how we want to live--in fear of the bad stuff, or in embracing all of the good that this board can be while minimizing the bad.

Re: This Forum
no one said you were responsible for what all is on the web. My kid don't get on here, so as far as defending my child seeing something oh well cause she could care less, I have parental controls on her computer she has in her room and we run regular checks to see what she is doing (sometimes that don't work cause she still gets into trouble, she is grounded at this time for that stuff) but we found it, we found out. What I am talking about is porn, cussing, and violent argument. If my kid can engage in a reasonably intelligent convo on politics, religion, and free-sharing of ideas then so be it more power to her, I encourage that. Blasting others, name calling, total disregard for others is what I am talking about. I just think people can disagree without threat without belittling and without having a holier than thou attitude.
-
Re: This Forum
I agree. I'm guilty of some of the more heated arguments and name-calling on here, but only due to having people attack my loved ones, unduely. I need to be more careful about that. The other arguments are logical arguments I get into, which are healthy debates amongst adults for the most part. I don't think a child wants to read over these arguments/debates b/c the posts get both complicated and long when stuff like this goes on.

[/ QUOTE ]
Sadly, there are some people that this forum is life & death to. I'm not one of them, but there are some who get on here just to feel big & bad. If we eliminated that as opposed to worrying too much about an avatar here or there, then it'd be a lot better place for kids, IMO.
