Next Appy Coach ?
Not been posting much lately. However to keep the one post from becoming a lot of crap. Well here is the scoop so far, as far as Appy head coaches. So post here on who you think.
1) Travis Turner - Current Off. Coach. May or may not want the job. May not be qualified to teach yet? Also seen what his dad went through as a head coach, may influence his decision.
2) Kevin Saunders- Currently signed with Shelby Valley. Not sure most consider him a fit with Appy football. Even if he had not signed with Shelby Valley. May of hurt himself in Wise Co. with his past job. Some times folks in Wise Co. aren't very forgiving.
3) Bobby Sanders - Former and present Dawg Asst. and former Coeburn head coach. May not have that Tom Turner, Appy Football attitude to get the job done. That get ya [censored] in gear and get it done attitude. Plus his performance at Coeburn as a head coach. Good man but that don't always cut it as a head football coach on any level.
4) Look outside - Yeah i know but what about it? Some one in the nack of Appy football, in your face coaching and getting after it, yet not acquainted with the personnel or program. Never know.
Add in who you think.
To me it's still up in the air.
But don't forget Tom is leaving some big shoes to fill, in Appy Dawg Football and the style of football.
26 yrs. one head coach. Not easy shoes to fill.
Also some should add some comments to the thread about coach Turner retiring.
I hear it may be added to a scrap book for him.
Thanks,
LPDFTBL

Re: Next Appy Coach
Kevin would come closer to turners style of the ones you mentioned..TOUGH, HARD NOSE FOOTBALL,,
-
Re: Next Appy Coach
I cant imagine anybody but Travis Tuner taking over.
-
Re: Next Appy Coach
I think Bobby Sanders would do good.
-
Re: Next Appy Coach
I don't think Sanders really has the presence to be a good head coach, he wasn't too impressive at Coeburn. I mean, the guy didn't say five words at practice, from what I've heard.
-
Re: Next Appy Coach
out of the three Saunders is the most qualified.
-
Re: Next Appy Coach
Don't you have to have Dawg blood to coach there?
-
Re: Next Appy Coach
Anyone who has played under Bobby Sanders knows hes a good coach, a good motivater, and a just an overall class act. He would be fine head coach.
Whenever Travis Turner is ready though he would be a good choice as well, Sanders and Turner would work good together.
The Saunders thing seems kinda odd to me, hes never really coached at a small school, and one as poorly funded as Appalachia.
-
Re: Next Appy Coach
I wouldn't hire Saunders to coach pit bulls. I've seen his crap first hand and that showed me all I needed to know. May know football no doubt, but people interaction gets a big ole fat F!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Next Appy Coach ?
Hey here's ya one Barry Jones from Gate City former PV defensive cord. What a way to bring the heat back to an old rivalry............
-
Re: Next Appy Coach
Bobby Sanders is qualified for the job, hes a [censored] fine guy. I would still do anything for that man to this day. I think hes the best to take over at Appy. I dont know which years exactly, but I know he was at Appy for a while in the early 90's and was part of 3 or 4 of their state titles. He didnt have anything to work with at Coeburn, and had to deal with all the parents. Its just my opinion and I know it dont matter to anybody else, but hes the winner.

Re: Next Appy Coach
I have no problem at all with Bobby Sanders. He came to Coeburn with a bad taste in his mouth after getting shafted pretty good at Lee High. I think he would be a good fit for the job at Appy he has their system in his blood.

From what I was told by talking to Bobby this isn't much different from what Tom did at Appy. Bobby let his coaches do their jon and coach, he went from group to group and keep an eye on prgress he did step in from time to time and take over a drill or add to a drill, but for the most part he did what a head coach should do and that is let his assistants take care of practice and keep things going per his schedule that he made up and gave each a copy before practice.

Re: Next Appy Coach
IMHO Bobby Sanders will be the next Appy Head man. Is it possable that the chance to be the head coach at Appy is the very reason he desided to leave the Coburn job?
-
Re: Next Appy Coach
Sanders looks better in Appy blue.

Re: Next Appy Coach
I don't have a horse, or in this case a dawg in this race, but it seems to me like Travis should at least be given a chance.
-
Re: Next Appy Coach
I can see how Travis would be the sentmental fav BUT how would he be a better choise for the head position than Sanders? (This is not a knock on Travis who very well may turn into a great coach himself)
-
Re: Next Appy Coach
I didn't mean I thought he would be a better choice. Sorry if it looked that way. I am sure the most qualified person will get the job. That program has too much tradition, I hope, for anything else to happen.
-
Re: Next Appy Coach
I think if you compare the records Saunders is better than Sanders. Saunders is more of the smash mouth type.
That being said I wish we had Coeburns play book at Kelly my senior year.
-
Re: Next Appy Coach
Why? Does he have the experience to be a head coach? No one should be given a chance if they don't have that experience. I don't have a dog in this race and I don't know if he has the experience. I do know that he is a young coach.

Re: Next Appy Coach
No names being mentioned, b/c this came from inside sources, and I was told to not mention any names...... A current LPD headcoach has also applied for the job.
Its actually one that I hope like h#%$ doesnt get it though.
And theres one applicant from outside of the LPD.
with all of this going on, I've been told that Coach Sanders will take over as headcoach, no matter who applies for the job. guess we'll have to wait and see.

Re: Next Appy Coach
Hey, I'll come up there and coach 'em if ya'll need me to. I mean heck, at Appalachia all you gotta know is belly left and belly right.

Re: Next Appy Coach
I asked Coach Saunders daughter and she said he was stayin at Shelby Valley
-
Re: Next Appy Coach
imo, he'll never be back in the LPD. Not at a WC school anyway. I think he's in a good situation where he's at anyway. SVHS is tradition rich, they won a state championship either 2-3 years ago, they've got great facilities, their game are televised.
(at least I think this is the same school)
-
Re: Next Appy Coach
I was wondering what their program was like when I heard he had taken that job. I know that they normally have some good basketball teams, but wasn't sure about football at Shelby Valley.
-
Re: Next Appy Coach
I'm pretty sure that's the same school. If you have Adelphia cable, the KY CBS station carries their football games. I watched them play a powerhouse team from Lexington last year. They were higher up in classification than SV and SV was rebuilding after the championship, but SV played them tough for 3 quarters before losing like 14 or 21 to like 38 or 40. It was a home game for SV and the place was packed and the facilities were AMAZIING!! I'm pretty sure they had a jubmo tron and everything.
I really don't see him leaving for anywhere other than Radford. Unless he's ran-off.
-
Re: Next Appy Coach
SV did not win a state championship in football recently. Middlesboro won one back in 98 or 99. and then you got Belfry won two in a role like 2 years ago.
-
Re: Next Appy Coach
Might be Belfry I'm thinking of then.
-
Re: Next Appy Coach
mg, appears you're right. It wasn't SV. It wasn't Belfry either though. I'm not sure who it was I saw. I'll delve more into that tomorrow. Now's time for dinner.
-
Re: Next Appy Coach
It was most likely breathitt. They are bluw and white and won a few titles, in the past few years.
-
Re: Next Appy Coach
Belfry did win state titles in 2003 and 2004
-
Re: Next Appy Coach
I was talking about the Appy/Coeburn blue colors. I will just wait and see on the coach situation.
-
Re: Next Appy Coach
Current LPD Head coach? Well I am sure it is not Phil or Nick or Rick or Adams and I don't think it would be B.I. that leaves Mullins from Pound (I could maybe see that one) or Mullins? from Coeburn and I would think he would stay put since Coeburn will be a much more competitive team in 2 years IMHO. Outside the LPD coach could very well be anyone . I can't help but think of several assistant coaches that might at least apply for the job
-
Re: Next Appy Coach
I am going to have to agree with Mox and TheBeast on this subject. Bobby Sanders is definitely the man for the head coaching job at Appalachia. I'm sure that most are going to say, well look at his tenure at Coeburn. His first year he went 6-4, with one or two of the lost games being very close. He had talent that year to work with, the players on that years team had the "want" to win, and the work ethics needed to win. The following years he did not have so much to work with, or should i say this. He had players to work with, but not as many as he needed, and not enough players that gave a good [censored] about winning, just being on a team was enough for some of them, and that heppened for 3 years straight. Not only this, but he had parents that he had to deal with that for some reason thought they were better coaches then he was. Most of the Coeburn posters that are on here can agree with me on that, it was pitiful. So i for one would love ot see Bobby Sanders as the head coach at Appalachia, with the tradition rich football program at Appalachia, i know Bobby is definitely going to be a good fit with that program and will yield winning results.

Re: Next Appy Coach
I think Counts should take over the reigns myself!
Just think if he had the plays wrote out on the board and Phil walked in....he would never be able to figure out what in the world the plays actually were due to the spelling thing
-
Re: Next Appy Coach
How about Bill Housewright now at Twin Springs? Just some food for thought.
-
Re: Next Appy Coach
Housewright was a name I had kicked around with a few people I could see him there I also thought about Barry Jones
-
Re: Next Appy Coach
If Coach Housey goes to Appy I will instantly be a Dawg fan, has anybody heard if he was interested? Coach Housey is alot like Coach Turner, I know I'm biased but he is the best defensive coach in the state, Coach Robbins said one time in the paper that "he was alright as long as he could keep Housewright from getting in a rythem calling defenses, but if he's in a rythem he was a tough man to beat." My senior year we gave up less than a touchdown average on defense, several shutouts, and then lost to Brookeville, (which by the way that game was a joke) he is a great motivator as well. You Dawg fans would love him!

Re: Next Appy Coach
I think they will offer it to Travis.
-
Re: Next Appy Coach
Does anyone have any Idea of when they are going to name a replacement?
-
Re: Next Appy Coach
Heard through a few it may be before April or soon there after.
Currently two on the staff and two from outside may be the leading candidates. One coach from the LPD and one coach from outside the LPD.
Coach Saunders is not a choice as of now. He has and is committed to Shelby Valley.
