How much longer can they wait on hiring a coach. The new coach must be able to get a staff and get the players lifting. I know alot of players are not lifting. We need some direction we can't keep waiting on this and that.

Do you mean theres no staff and no weightlifting? Im sure they let yall lift, right? Are the players not working hard? Coach Turner once said "You can tell what kinda person and player you can be, if your working hard when no ones watching" Think about that.
Get em into the weightroom Diets, YOU DA MAN
Where is the senior/junior leadership. You push yourself. That is how you get to be where you need to be. Don't wait for some one to push you. Push yourselves.
You win games when you want them more, not a coach, or for a coach, but you yourselves, weightlifting is no different.
You have to want to be the best, so you push yourself, and those who want to be some thing, or a part of some thing.
Hopefully not much longer things will get better.
There is no one to blame here but two, one the school administration and two the SB.
Sorry but the truth.
I've spent 20 years helping in some form way or fashion. Im frustrated myself.
So to those looking in. Do what is right by these kids and the program Coach Turner and others built.
Old saying lead and they shall follow. Got to have a leader some times.
I'm just wondering if there is some underlying cause that we don't all know about. Does anybody know officially who the applicants are or were? I'v read lots of heresay on this board and wishful thinking, but it comes down to who wants the job? It would be a great job for the right person, provided a staff of assistants could be assembled.
I don't know, but maybe the administration is working hard to fill the position, but the right person hasn't come forward to accept the position. It is a tradition-laden program in which the right coach could continue the tradition.....but....it won't be easy following Tom, especially without an adequate staff. Not many quality coaches are going to walk into a no-win situation that could put them out of coaching.
Appalachia does have two school board members so I would think for sure they are aware of the urgency of the situation.
Maybe something will be decided soon at the next SB meeting.
How about the basketball job? I do know there is a current assistant who wants the job, I'm just wondering why he or someone else hasn't been named.
Lee County School Board Meeting is Tomorrow! cough, cough...
I know Mike Goforth has taken over the basketball job...
No word on a football coach yet..some said a guy from Grundy has applied
I agree that the players should push themselves in off season workouts even without a coach (and some probably are) however it is never a good idea to turn kids loose in a weight room with no adult supervision. Not only is it a potently dangers situation but MOST kids have no clue how to lift (Sets, Reps, Weight and most importantly Form) it becomes very possable you will have some kids bulk up but lose flexibility/speed.....The older kids that have been in the system could step in and help out the younger kids but there is always the risk of horseplay getting the best of the situation or worse you could have a situation like RC had a few years ago (I am not saying to that extreme but kids will do some screwed up things to each other when no one is watching)

I don't believe that's the case. I would be shocked if they had a lot of applicants to choose from for this job. Coaches have to take into consideration that it's an extremely small school that could be closed within a few years and Appalachia is not exactly a desirable place to live these days.
Well i can understand the concern. However, there seems to be something that is not right.
How long has it been since the annoucement of Mr. T's retirement.
Yet no coach on board in a traditon laden program.
I agree counts, no supervision is just as bad as to many coaches.
Right now it seems Appy needs just one coach for their football program. Even if it isn't a head coach.
Someone will take the program, Goforth took the basketball, are ya gonna belittle him too? Just run down the whole bunch, lets get'em started. You might even get Tom out of retirement , you are closing the school again, also I noticed. Let's see what a guy that played a different kind of basketball can do with what Appy has for players. Got ANOTHER gym for PV and Coeburn, when are we gonna get one at Appy Elem? Let them play on the short goals forever. Politics are so smart, when you make a mistake of the proper kind it sounds so well and good when you fix it, not like you are leaving JJK playing in a gym that won't hold their fans or leaving the programs at Appy out, and the elementary school has never been mentioned for closing.
I dont know how safe it is Counts. I remember a particular fieldhouse "supervisor" in Clintwood who absolutely put kids through hell. It was all I could do many days just to crawl out of there. Coach Counts was the maniac's name....

aint that just an a s s hole thing to say.
It's common sense. Just look at the real estate ads in the paper and Appalachia probably doesn't have a house for sell over $150K and that's still in an inflated market. I'm sure hanging out at a gas station is fun and all but what else is there in Appalachia besides the high school?
Payless, Double Kwik, Appco. That's about it.

The gyms at PV and Coeburn were a waste of money but it's the school board making the decisions so what do you expect? The fact that they approved a seating capacity of 500 for both gyms should tell you their not exactly Ivy League graduates. As for Kelly's gym, it's true their gym is small but so is their attendance. There's not a lot of support for the athletic programs in Wise and I doubt they've had to turn people away for games in the past five years.
So its not a booming real estate town, truth be known most of the houses are old and there is the risk of a methane explosion. Otherwise, Im sure there are plenty of people on here that find appalachia to be a nice place to live and I respect that. You can look at Abingdon and say, well norton isnt very desirable because Abingdon's real estate market is booming, yet most people are very satisfied living in norton. Besides, appalachia sure beats a crappy town like wise any day of the week.
some folks on here will never learn to have respect for hard working people....and the town they live in
Someone from Norton calling Wise a crappy town... LMAO
Basically, all of the towns in SWVA have their eye sores. All of them are coal-dingy, full of old buildings, businesses that have closed down..etc. Wise County towns aren't exactly travel-brochure material, but the folks are good for the most part.
I was joking Indian Dad, I just thought it was messed up to put Appy down like that.
I took offense to it also, especially since that guy is not from Wise.
It was a joke fellas...lighten up a little. To be honest about it he was kinda right, considering al lthe towns in SWVA are crappy. But the people are some of the nicest people I know.
We have board members who make an income off of all these small towns in Wise County. They decide what X amount of money goes to each school for what ever they need. But IMO the board is leaving out Appy and could care less really about trying to spend money on all these towns to make them look better. Is the excuse that well in a couple of years we will all consolidate anyway so why spend the money now? I thought when the lotto came in here that it was going to be a resource to help all our schools, but yet I've only seen that money go up Northern Va.. I don't know much about politics but I know that our school board is doing a poor job at funding for our schools. It would be nice to have a board that really cared enough to start making our towns look better. I don't care how many students attend these small schools they all deserve a nice school and gym. You don't spend on some schools and leave some out.
I hear from the rumor mill that there is some good interest in the head position at Appy. Good surprises ahead if everything works out. Stay tuned!
Guys, no offense, but most of our towns aren't desireable positions or places.
Don't take everything so thin-skinned.
I mean lets be honest, Appy is not that far from a ghost town. Most people living there will tell you that, as will people in Pound, Clintwood, etc.
Is there a benefit to living in those places? Sure there is, but its not a place people live thinking high living, and big money, and moving into the area normally requires someone to be from the area, and looking to move back to a simpler lifestyle. Appy, with the nature of the way the school system has been looked at, would have to be viewed a bit more carefully than many other jobs in the education field. That's not cutting.

I'm not referring to the people that live in Appalachia. I'm simply stating that it's not a place most people would choose to reside in these days.

I was thinking the same thing! Thats like the pot calling the kettle black.
Anyway, if youll read, the thread wasnt about calling wise crappy, I was saying it was messed up to put appalachia down that way. Widespread, Jeremy Beverly is from Wise, so I thought Id make a point. Reading is fundamental Greencrest.
Justin Beverly? Seldom right and wrong again funeral home.

Not according to several people that know you and that have outed you. If you're not Justin, maybe you need to take it up w/him that he's telling others that he's you.
Of course, you could clear this up by telling others who you actually are. Everyone on here knows basically who mega, vthokie22, Stripes, NOLA/lifer, myself, and others are because we're not afraid to back up our opinions in person or have them equated with our real name and not just our screen name.
Excuse me, Jeremy Beverly. I posted that quickly.
If Im wrong, I guess youre wrong too since I have no affiliation with any funeral home unless you just want to be put in one.
My name is Chad. Does that clear up anything?

I thought you were Pablo, Mr. Escobar...LOL
Jeremy, Justin, Jermaine, Jelisa...I could care less. The point is that we have screen names on here, yes, but at least some of us don't care to fully stand behind what we say on here instead of embracing the anonymity this board affords some of us. In other words, it avoids the "internet tough guy" effect...people getting on here, saying some pretty mean or unpopular things, and then not posting for weeks or months, only to come back and post something else messed up or controversial w/no responsibility to defend your position.
Widespread is one example, there are others. Just my opinion on this.
The idea of people allowing people to know who they are or not allowing is up to the individual. No person should feel bad that they don't but likewise, if you talk the talk, you should at least have enough gumption to walk the walk. I appreciate there are certain times that someone may not want a post or a comment attributed to them, and they should have that right.
Basically, if you want to volunteer your information, fine, but if not, no big deal

Agreed, but the part of your post in bold is what I take my stance on when it comes to people who come on here and act like know-it-alls, but don't have the [censored] to man (or woman) up and identify themselves, at least in a round-about way so people have an idea of their allegiances and who they are.
But you are correct Rock--it's everyone's right, but that doesn't mean I have to respect those that abuse that right to anonymity.
EDIT--Wow...this thing censored co-jones. Didn't know our filter was multi-lingual.
I know I was just saying. We have some people who post here who 'can't reveal' who they are or are unwilling to due to circumstances, and I just wanted them to know that they are under no pressure to reveal
Even if someone is an idiot, they have a right to be an anonymous idiot (unless they violate rules)
