Its Official: Bobby Sanders named head coach at

Bobby Sanders has been named new head coach at Lee.

Derservingly so in my opinion. Appalachia missed the boat big time. Sanders will be better off in the long run IMO. Much more potential to make a big time name for himself at Lee.

I think he will do A fine job there IMHO Lee will be a much improved team over the next 4 or 5 years and a year in and year out playoff continder when they drop to A

This also may give Appy the closer it may have been waiting on before nameing there new coach

I agree Counts. I think Lee is on the road to having a successful program.

Was Sanders at the meeting? Show me where he signed to take the job and then I'll believe the story.

I think I read somewhere that the Lee School Board was supposed to meet either last night or tonight maybe??? Im not 100% but today is within the time frame for the announcement.

Bobby was probably not at the meeting, but he was named coach by the Lee Co school board. he did apply so I assume he wants the job. he probably has not signed on th edotted line so to speak, but that is just a formality.

Yeah, I know what they want, but is this what HE wants?.....You forget I hung around with Chris Days(Pennington Gap's last state QB , I'm thinking he QBed Lees first) father , Gary Buch's dad(sorry I ain't gonna try to spell all that) know a little about Don Williams, I can go back to the Rep party of the late 70s in Lee County. I go back farther than Sanders in Lee County, I was down there yesterday. I'm just saying it is a tougher place to coach than Appy.

I dont really know...but I cant imagine that it would be much fun trying to follow Tom Turner. Not to mention declining enrollment and as crazy as it sounds a declining interest in football in Appy. Of course the grass isnt always greener on the other side but in this case I have to say that the Lee job is a much better opportunity.

Well if he applied, perhaps he wants it, then again perhaps like everything else in Lee Co maybe it comes with an * . I don't claim to be able to speak for Sanders, it is just that he was promised things before, and didn't see them, and with the suits the Lee board is facing , I don't see much green grass. It is his choice.

I think its one of those situations where his heart probably says Appy but his head says Lee. And if the Appalachia and Wise County higher ups will not make a decision, Lee High is the obvious choice.

I wish Coach Sanders, his wife, and their little boy nothing but the best there. Coach Sanders is an incredible person truly one of a kind and I know he will do great things there.

I was in Lee County today, yesterday, the day before, etc. And I was at every game Chris Day ever quarterbacked and I played for Don Williams....so big deal!!! Football isn't viewed in the same light here as it used to be and it probably never will. He would never be out of Tom's shadow at Appy or Travis's for that matter so no he won't have a more difficult time at Lee. If he has a .500 or better overall record during the next 3 years he will be held in very high esteem and believe me it shouldn't be that hard of a task. Again, the aura that revolved around football here dissipated long ago. Jonesville's attendance at games far exceeded what Lee has drawn over the past 7 years.

Sanders is a great guy and a good coach- I hope he stays at Appy. If he doesn't , I hope he has some luck at Lee.

[/ QUOTE ] That is the problem, football isn't viewed in the same light. They used to have some fair teams. If some of the parents come on up with the Lee kids and keep helping things might change, but after so long , I'll have to see it first.

WOODWAY - In a recessed meeting Tuesday, the Lee County School Board voted unanimously to hire Bobby Sanders as head football coach and biology teacher at Lee High School. Superintendent Fred Marion recommended Sanders for the position at the recommendation of Lee High Principal Ron Earley. Marion presented the board with a letter from Earley outlining his reasoning for the recommendation. "I believe that hiring Coach Sanders would be in the best interest of Lee High both academically and athletically. Academically, Coach Sanders is an excellent teacher and is certified to teach biology, chemistry and driver's education," Earley wrote. Marion also presented board members with a letter from Sanders informing them of his intent to resign as a teacher in the Wise County school system if he was offered the position

I really like Sanders and wish him the best and only the best. Some things have happened that might make him wish to stay at Appy (I hope so anyway, he ,Travis and Tom work well together), he has been in the Lee system before, and a head coach at another location. When I see a statement from him saying he is gone , then I'll agree with you- till then I'll hold my cards. Things change. Fast. I wish Bobby all the best at Lee I know he has wanted this job for a long time even when he first came to Coeburn he wanted to be at Lee. I do believe that he wants to go there to prove that he should have gotten the job the first time and he is letting this lead him now. Bobby is a very good coach and will do well in the right system which is Appy. I don't know of anyone that will be able to overcome all the poitics at Lee and get the players out that are not part of whichever party is in cahrge at the time.

If it does become "official", Appalachia has SCREWED themselves IMO. Its May and still no head coach. Its just 2 months before practice begins.

If anything, I have alot of sympathy towards Appy and Travis. Imagine your whole life at a crossroads based upon a test and at the same time your father passes away. From family dying in the past, my experience is that its nearly impossible to focus on anything but what your mind is already on. Its going to be a battle for him to pass that test while going through the grief that he is having do endure. God bless him and good luck.

Kind of puts things in perspective. Football is not so important at this time. I knew Tom when he was in High School as I taught 7th Grade at Appy Elementary. The Turner Family and the community of Appalachia needs our prayers.

Thanks teach, a little sympathy is kinda nice. Seeing how the community has lost a leader and friend.
