I would talk to JRCivic, if he can't do it he can tell you who can
Well considering that the B16B motor's head is ported and polished from Honda by hand like the Integra Type-R's is I would leave it alone...are you trying to gain NA HP from that motor??...if so I would consider some cams and a upgraded valvetrain such as new valve springs and titanium retainers...if you are going FI I would leave it as is...what are you plans?

Hey CivicR .... the reason I want to have head work done - is because when I finally got the engine I ordered - it looked great on the outside - but when I popped the valve cover - I was really disappointed - the bolts that hold the cam girdles down were rusted pretty bad - the cam gears were rusted pretty bad - so I did a leak down test - and none of the cylinders would hold very much pressure - the valves would not seal at all - I pulled the intake off so I could check if the valves were closed - I poured a very small amount of oil into the intake port and re-tested the leak down and I could see the oil bubbling because the valves don't seat properly - check this link out for the pictures I took of the rust - you tell me if I should be upset or not - the guy I bought the engine from -says rust is normal on JDM engines because they sit at the docks for long periods of time - he says the valves don't seat properly because of carbon build up - I told him that didn't sound right - it looks like this head was exposed to the elements for a pretty long time to get this much rust and corrision.
I don't want to do any port work - I just want to have someone reliable break the head down - replace any valves that might be bad - and check the seats - and seals.

there are 3 pages of pictures - tell me if you think this looks ok ...
I think the guy that sold it to me is full of crap !
He did say that if I wasn't happy with the engine - he would happily take it back.

Sorry to hear about your problems with the motor....we have all felt that pain of not getting what you want ...it sucks!!...If I were you I would consider returning the motor...it should not look like that...who knows what else you will find as you dig around inside...I have a JDM B16A and it looked perfect inside and out....no rust at all....it looks like that motor was exposed to some serious elements...good luck!
CivicR - where did you buy your engine ?
I am not sure if I am going to keep this engine - but then again - I figure, being that when you buy a JDM engine - there is no way to really tell what you are going to get - or what you got until you go inside - If I sent this engine back - I would probably wind up going through the next engine I bought too.
So if that's the case - maybe I should just go ahead and keep it - go through it - this way I'll have the peice of mind knowing that it's the way it's supposed to be ...
At this point ... I am not sure WHAT I want to do ...

The ECU is definitely an OBD-II.2 set-up.
Here is a the best pic of the head I could find

Great! ...thanks for the info John, I was hoping to see that under MY valve cover ...unfortunatly you saw what I saw
I bought mine from Import Motors Online ... spoke to a guy named Steve (real fast talker!) ... they are in CA.
He told me that he has a 13HP power washer which accounts for why my engine looked so good on the OUTSIDE !
I told what I found - he basicaly told me that he wished he had never sent me the engine - he had buyers that were willing to pay more than what I paided ...
Then told me all about how these engines are exposed to water when they come over,
he even told me that he has heard every complaint in the book (I wonder why) ... he sure sounded like he had an answer for everything.... but alot of his answers don't sound convicing to me - he told me to hook a battery to the engine and spin it over for 10 MINUTES ! then re-test the leak down.
10 MINUTES !? ... I guess he figured I would buy the replacement starter from him later after I burned mine up spinning the motor over!
I Bought my motor from Import Auto Salvage in North Carolina...their service is great along with the motors...my motor was in excellent condition and they included every part that i needed for the swap and then some...I have heard from alot of people that they are a top quality shop to buy from...and in my experience they were...I was told by them that they open up the valve covers, etc to check the motor before they sell it so you wont end up with something like this...my motor has been in the car for over 3000 miles and it runs great...very strong!!!
PS...You shold NOT have to rebuild a JDM motor...I bought mine with the intent of replacing the minor maintenance items and dropping it in...thats exactly what I did and you should be able to do too...good luck!
importautosalvage.com
I am pretty sure that my motor is out of one of the two Civic front clips pictured there on the left side...they send a group to Japan to pick the motors personally so they end up with cleaner motors

well after going roundy round with the guy I bought the engine from - I'm just going to keep it and pop the head off and send it to PYR Racing - in Houston - Peter at PYR sounds like he can put my head back to factory specs for a reasonable amount on money ....

That sux man, sorry you got the short end of the stick on that deal as far as your new engine is concerned... While the head is off, maybe some new high revving valve train components? P&P? ARP studs?
Well ... I am going with all new valves - PYR is going to clean the head up for me - might go with new vavles springs and retainers - not decided - will go back with ARP studs - going to shy away from P&P work for now .... I'll send pics of the head when it's down - probably be a few weeks -
just another thumbup for Larry Jr. and the top notch service from IAS! if you want to get good cylinder headwork done, i would also recommend Tom over at portflow. i sent him my D16Y8 head for refinishing. because it took longer than he liked, he did some mild porting work for free on my cylinder head. grea guy, great shop. and he was totally up front on the time problems and very responsive to email and phone calls. even gave me a top end gasket kit for dealer cost (this made my order even cheaper than his quote).
hmmmmmmmmmmm ... Thanks for the info ---
