Dixie Chicks
Is these women just trying to ruin their careers. Last night Reba McIntyre blasted them.
Seems they think country music is lame. Where did they get their start.
They think people like Reba and Toby Keith stereotype country music.
Who has been around longer than Reba and done what she has done. Even have her own show. Not bad for a country hick.
Don't know about the Chicks. Seems they have a bad attitude toward anyone who don't agree with their views.
Guess they have never heard the saying. We can agree to disagree.
Hope rock is as good to them as country has been.

Re: Dixie Chicks
Slap in the face to country music fans. And by former artist of country.
[ QUOTE ]
"I don't even know what's played on country radio, but when they tell me some titles, it cracks me up," laughs lead singer Natalie Maines, sitting in a swank New York hotel as the group promotes its new album, "Taking the Long Way," out this week.
"Besides, where would we fit on the playlist between `Honky Tonk Badonkadonk' and `Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off'?" asks Maines, citing two recent country hits, as the rest of the Chicks _ sisters Martie Maguire and Emily Robison _ join in her laughter.

Re: Dixie Chicks
I think the DC's musicianship is incredible.
And I would think that "real country" singers probably feel the same way about some of these songs and artists (Big and Rich, for example) that are total crap in the country music arena.
It's kinda like when people like Britney Spears or Jessica Simpson say they are "artists".
I guess gimmicks (no matter what music genre) just get on my nerves too, so I would have to agree with the DC's to a certain extent.
-
Re: Dixie Chicks
people get mad at the dixie chicks because they dont go along with the "America can do no wrong" crowd...which is basically 99% of the country music fan base, so what if they lose their fan base, it's their choice...but somehow i don't suspect their record sales will dry up very much
-
Re: Dixie Chicks
Well i have a lot of varied music interest myself. From hard rock to the blues.
Just hard for me to grasp, why you want to burn bridges. Political views and other views, is what country music is about. Telling a story.
All i see in their story is a few women, who forgot who helped to make them. Then they make fun of them.
Alot in county that are just there. They will run their course and that be that.
But the long term folks of country music deserve a little respect.

Re: Dixie Chicks
I guess "Earl Had to Die" or "Sin Wagon" is their idea of intellectual and insightful country music? Gimme a break. These girls have no business laughing at anybody's lyrics in country music.
-
Re: Dixie Chicks
True. Very good point. I'm just saying, that's not what their entire act is based on, imo.
I'm not even a fan. I just think they are good musicians. I can respect that.
-
Re: Dixie Chicks
Fantastic point! I'm so tired of celebrities using their fame as a soapbox to espouse their personal views. Most of these "artists," to use the term loosely, are products of big business anyway (not that there is anything wrong with that). Politically vocal stars such as the Dixie Chicks (Bruce Springsteen, Bon Jovi, Neal Young, and the list goes on forever) can fool themselves into thinking they are somehow artists worthy of respect for intellectual output. The truth is their music or "art," whether good or not, is a product. They are a part of system they often trash. It strikes me as funny that in many cases these artists benefit from a capitalist industry/society they claim to dislike.
If the Dixie Chicks are concerned about how their product is marketed (i.e. country music radio), drop all ties with the music "busines" and focus on creating music for purely artistic purposes; otherwise, shut up. Somehow, I don't see the Dixie Chicks or Dave Matthews taking the pay cut necessary to maintain true artistic integrity. Natalie Maines and the rest should be grateful they are paid so well to use their talents.
Sometimes entertainers forget what their roles are. Most people don't buy Dixie Chicks CDs to hear Natalie Maine's political views. If she, or any other artist for that matter, wants to sway political opinion, she (or they) should go into politics or government. Otherwise, shut up and play your songs...

Re: Dixie Chicks
Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, almost every artist in the Vietnam era, musicians are by the very nature, going to have social commentary in some songs, at least if they are worth a hoot.
I'm sorry it doesn't work that we build up "Have they forgotten" or "Taliban song" and then totally go off when someone has a different view.
A very good point on the comparison of some to Jessica Simpson and such.

Re: Dixie Chicks
Different points of view in songs is great. All are free to express their views to a certain point, but one must also accept the criticism and/or praise that comes with it. Bob Dylan can express his opinions all day long, but just because he is a musician doesn't give him credibility or expertise. If it does him good to express his views, great for him. However, one would hope that an intelligent music-buying public would be able to form its own opinions about controversial topics. I don't particularily care for some of the ideas Rage Against the Machine expressed, but it didn't make me like their music any less. I don't judge them, or any other artist, on political view points. If I give a Dylan CD a spin, I'm looking for quality songs--not advice or guidance. If he happens to touch a chord with my own belief system, great; if not, no big deal. I still may very well like the music. I have my own will to make decisions as to how I feel politically. I don't need Toby Keith or Pearl Jam to tell me how to view politics, war, or anything else for that matter. I wouldn't trust their judgement anyway.

Re: Dixie Chicks
The problem is that they ask them, they don't ask Jim Slim on the sidewalk his opinion. I mean shoot we voice our opinion on here rather strongly, some against, some for things, the only thing is we don't have the pulpit they do. The same people on here who crucify the Chicks for their opinions or views are the same ones who go 'that a boy Toby!' or talk about how wonderful Darryl Worley is for his songs. I have no problem with the different views, but unfortunately as always, some don't have that.

Re: Dixie Chicks
"my god can beat up your god"
a quote from Phil Anselmo (lead singer from PanteraA, DOWN, Superjoint ritual) on his opinions of the war, Iraq, terroism etc.
Sorta funny if you ask me.

Re: Dixie Chicks
Guys i am not for or against them. I just think their killing their own influence out.
To me if they want to ruin their careers that is up to them. Just what i see them doing myself.
They got mad at some of the folks in country music cause they didn't support their actions.
Well if they think Rock is gonna be any forgiving i doubt it.
It's not just the view point. It was how they turned against those that made them what they are.
Hot or not.
You don't bite the hand that feeds you. Or buys your cd's. That is the bottom line in business or any kind of work.
I think these girls are trying to be controversial, to get a new following. But i think who ever is leading them is doing more damage than good to these girls careers.
Let see if their willing to do all it takes to survive in the music industry now.
Not just the looks but the act.
Hot will sell for awhile. But after awhile that gets old.
Maybe they should of ask some of those they are now ridiculing, in country how they survived so long.

Re: Dixie Chicks
The lead singer is not in my top 100 as far as hot women in country. The other two are ok but nothing special.
When they spoke out against Bush they had every right to say what they said...its their right and there was nothing wrong with what they said. The problem I and so many others had with it was "where" they said it. Kinda similar to the Jane Fonda thing. Over all though I had kinda forgot about that and kinda forgotten about their act as a whole. I have a lot bigger problem with them dissing their fellow entertainers, country artists/songwriters and acting like they are too good and too talented for country radio. That leaves an heir of arrogance that doesn't sit well with the blue collar conservative fan base of country music. Its like going into a UMWA meeting and yelling MINERS SUCK! This especially doesn't sit well considering some of the "so called" redneck songs that they themselves wrote and ended up having big hits with which helped to make them famous in the first place...its like they are hippocritical now.
-
Re: Dixie Chicks
I think that the Dixie Chicks took an unpopular stance at the beginning of this war and time has proved them right. So to everyone who cried foul and refused to play their songs on the radio are now probably feeling the way the Chicks were back in the beginning but they are too proud to admitt it
-
Re: Dixie Chicks
I just think who ever is fueling their fire is destroying them.
Personally a lot us of might and do not have the same views.
And in work and business that happens. But in work or business, how often can you afford, to say exactly how you feel?
The bridges you burn come back to haunt you sometime.
Who ever is fueling them. I am afraid may be hurtin them.
Right or wrong. In the music industry as many others industries, it is the longevitiy that is remembered.
This area is known as a blue collar area for coal. When coal went down so did the area.
Coal has picked up.
That happens sometimes and sometimes it doesn't.
I guess if their out of country music for good, we will see in a few years, if they slump and return, or slump and disappear.
Like i said guys i have on real interest. I listen to all kinds of music. I listen to it for the pleasure. Not the reaons behind it.
And i think we all on the 4th of July. Like to remember what this country stands for don't we. So we may listen to some patriotic music.
Just hate to see people ruin things for themselves. And i see that possibly happening here.
Just my two cents. Some one lend me a dollar and i can buy a cup of coffee.

Re: Dixie Chicks
Time has proved them right? In what way? Popular war or unpopular war its never going to be totally acceptable to go to another country and speak in a negative way during a time of war about the Commander-in-Chief of your own democratic country whose commander in chief is chosen by it's own citizens. It wasn't acceptable when Jane Fonda did it...it wasn't acceptable when Harry Belafonte did it and it wasn't acceptable when Natalie Maines did it. Do they have a right to do it? Ofcourse. Did people have a right to disapprove and in some cases not buy their records or play them on air? Absolutely.
-
Re: Dixie Chicks
You reap what you sew. If they don't respect country music then that's fine, they can choose the type of music they play. The problem is they just can't seem to keep their mouths shut. It's a shame that they're letting their personalities and attitudes overshadow they're talent.
-
Re: Dixie Chicks
Personally, I would put them in the same class as Hanoi Jane, Michael Moore, Mike Ferrell, and several other celebs. If they hate the US of A so much there are no laws that pervent them from leaving. At least none that I am aware of.
-
Re: Dixie Chicks
Bob Dylan, Springsteen and even John Fogherty all had anti-war stances and songs. Fortunate Son isn't a song about celebration
-
Re: Dixie Chicks
The only thing I disagree with about the dixie chicks is when they first started blasting George W. Bush and Toby Keith it was over seas. And I think that is what stirred the pot and got them into so much "trouble". If you are gonna complain about this nation, atleast do it on our own dirt.
Personally, I dont care what someone's political beliefs are. As long as there are celebrities, there are gonna be people with political agendas who are going to use their popularity for what they feel is ethical.
All I can say is atleast they have an opinion. I would rather hear these three women whine about the way our country is run, then here Paris Hilton say "thas hot", or watch Xtina dry hump a pole. They have an opinion and they are voicing it. Whether that opinion be good or bad is up to the perception of the person listening to it. Like it or not they are roll models. I would rather have my future children (Luke and Leia) have some sort of political opinion (askewed or not) then be some mindless drone that is nothing but oil that lubricates the wheels of society.
Look at the hollywood rolemodels today (Jessica Simpson, Britney, 50 cent, K-fed, Paris, Lindsy Lohan etc). These people are faker then the skinny white boy who goes to the bowlin ally for rap battles with a backwards Yankees hat and saggy jeans don to his knees.
If these women are informed and truely believe what they preach, more power to them. You may say they have no right being political, but how many members on this forum have any right being political? I'll tell you, every single member registered.

It is not the words in a song in this case. That is not a fair comparison. It is simply all the things that have been said publically.

Re: Dixie Chicks
It's great to live in a country where you can state your opinion, but when you start slinging mud at people that have have always "kept clean" throughout their careers, I have a problem with that. I must've missed the news story about Reba causing a stir. They sure didn't care to sling mud her way. I wondered what her comment was about last night. Now it all fits. Re: Dixie Chicks
Seen CMT lately. Dead? Yeah Ok. Then why are we even talking about these Chicks?
Come on Biggin i expect more from you than that. Dead?
-
Re: Dixie Chicks
If you classify what you see on CMT as "country" music, then I guess I gave you more credit than you deserve.
Alan Jackson, George Strait and Brad Paisley sing country music.
Rascal Flatts, Keith Urban, Kenny Chesney, etc.... do not sing country music.

Re: Dixie Chicks
Kenny Chesney is the BIGGEST SELL OUT in country music history. he might as well change his name to jimmy buffet. he is a guy in his mid 40s who still sings about high school football and going to the beach.
sorry, every time i hear someone try to say kenny chesney is a country music singer, i go off. i also would not consider rascal flatts or keith urban country music.
But back to the topic at hand. This is America. You have freedom of speech. As citizens we need to discourage the "if you don't like it get out" attitude. Why? Because that makes YOU hypocritcial. People came to America for certain rights. One of those rights, is to complain about the way things are ran. If people want to have that attitude, then more power to them. Although Bush has done some stuff I didnt agree with, I love this country, and regardless of my political beliefs will stand behind the commander in chief and this nation in the long run.
I group the people who have the "if you don't like it get out" attitude with the "bleeding heart liberals". These people are ostriches. They have their head burried so far in the ground they can't see the light of day even when you present plan facts to them.
or this is what i was told from a third party.

Re: Dixie Chicks
Man i am lost.
These ain't country singers in most minds. But who is playing them. And what are they singing about? Life?

Re: Dixie Chicks
Actually he's around 35-36. There was a guy from GC that played in the ETSU bluegrass band with him. Not quite sure he's a sellout. I'd much rather hear a song about high school football or the beach compared to some of the other stuff that's out there. I guess people feel about him as I do Shania Twain. She's considered country and has never had a country song.
