Local College Players

Just out of curiosity, I was wondering how many boys from around here have played for D-I schools in the past few decades. Also, I would like to know if Tech lives up to its billing as Virginia's program as far as SW VA is concerned.

I'll start a list. If anyone else can add anyone, please add. If you can clearify or correct spellings, please do.

also why highlight the D1...if you don't know that the schools i listed were D1 then you don't follow college sports do you

I was almost 100% sure he came in a year after Peters. And then Housey followed in at the winter break.

i know he signed with wofford...however long he stayed i do not know...but i remember when he told me he committed there

Some former Blue Devils (going way back on some): Jeff Baker - Georgia Tech, Darwin Pippin - VT (bb), Mickey Rogers -VT, Doug Humphreys - Vanderbilt, Dennis Wolfe - Tennessee, Rick Begley and Rick Shoemaker - ETSU (DI at that time). Just a note, the '74 state title team had at least 5 players that signed with a DI school. That might not be quite as impressive as it sounds today as scholarship numbers were considerably higher back then than the 85 of today.

CJ played at Emory & Henry and did very good,, transferred to UVA/WISE,, but i don't think he is playing this year. I understand he had surgery not too long ago.

W&M, ETSU, Princeton and every other college I named are D-I--remember there are two tiers in D-I.

So, what am I being blaimed for again? Oh, I am sorry, Notre Dame is better and thus above everyone else...my bad.

And, Wofford is SoCon, i.e., D-I. If you arent familiar with Southern Conference football, then you are missing out on something special.

I mean every O-line coach around here is using Georgia Southern's coaching methods and drills. Coeburn has even adopted large segments of GA Southern's Delaware-variant offense. Appalachia State is the defending National Champions. Come to think of it, how many "DI"--albeit DI-AA--titles do GA Southern, Appy St, and Furman share altogether? This year how many boys from the region are playing at Appy St alone? D-B's center and Lee's QB from '05, those I know for sure.

I think it is safe to assume that Va Tech has dominated recruiting around here, and particularly one town down in Scott County.

Travis Turner went to VT, not UT.

A couple more you can add...Seth Askins from Clintwood was a walk on at UVA and Greg Tester from Hurley was a walk on at Miami.

Tom Turner also went to VT. Clintwood's former coach, Bob Meade, went to ETSU as well and was an All-American.

The roster on Carson-Newman's page hasn't been updated in awhile. GC has 5 players down there, and Beasley's the only one listed.

Also, Matt McGlothlin from Richlands recently received a scholarship as a senior at UT. He had a little trouble there a couple years ago, but has worked hard and earned everything he's received.

Right now, he's said to be the starter for Cal. Fulmer said he's a real big, tough guy. I don't think he'll stay at the starting position for long though. He lacks any real explosiveness.
