My LPD Forecast
Powell Valley--Don't really like em, but always have admired their program. Team to beat.
Norton-If they had a Robbins or Colobro coaching, 2 State trophies would be in their case. May get one this year.
Clintwood-Maybe no high tide this year, but the next 2 years will be special.
Appalachia-Will suprise some teams this year. Might be #2.

Coeburn-2-8

Wise-6-4-----I like BI as a coach and hope he has a good season.

Re: My LPD Forecast
Ouch blaming coaching for Norton....man....Jimbo may find you and take you out!
I don't think he's done a bad job, Norton has athletes before for years and couldn't progress nowhere near as far as they have the last few. I think he's done a great job, only thing he hasn't done is a state title.
-
Re: My LPD Forecast
All those athletes and no titles. COACHING!!!!!!!!!! Look about 10 minutes down the road. Appy 5 titles-----PV 8, with Robbins coaching 7. Tells me something.
-
Re: My LPD Forecast
I'm not sure it`s as much coaching as the fact that schools in the same division on the other side of Va are so much larger. Until anything is changed I just cant see anyone from Div 1 winning a State Championship
-
Re: My LPD Forecast
No question, Appy did somethings that were impressive, but how many of Appys wins came after Jimbo was at Norton? The dynamics/teams in the smaller divisions changed as well. It's been a few years since Appy managed to do much either.
-
Re: My LPD Forecast
You, me, Counts and slurve could've taken all that speed and won a State Championship!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Re: My LPD Forecast
Thats BS, Jimbo has done a wonderful job at Norton... When Turner won all those titles in the 90's it was against smaller schools on the other side of the state... Granted, they still brought home the gold but, they were not facing schools with enrollment the size of PV either.... Mannassas Park has been to state what 2 out of the last 3 years and won one against PV, look who's Division they are in now, Division 1. The schools around here are staying the same size but on the other end of the state they are getting larger and moving to smaller divisions... It's hard to compete with that... IMO Jimbo has done a great job and as a Burton fan and completely satisfied with what he has done, he will bring home the gold one day... True we have alot of speed but on the other end they can match it now, not the case back in the 90's.... I am not saying Burton would have done better than Appy upstate during their run because that was something special when Turner, Clark, and Jessie played...but I think it would have been easier than today....
The Burton program has made tremendous strides in the past few years and JIMBO is a main reason why, his game preparation each week is more than most coaches around here do in a season, he watches film everyday of the week to gameplan on the upcoming opponent. I guess the behind the scenes stuff doesn't count to most people.....
-
Re: My LPD Forecast
I know when Pv played them in state, Mannassas had over 600 students.
-
Re: My LPD Forecast
Exactly, and now they are in Division 1.... Burton 180 students, Mannassas Park 600.... Hmmmmm, does that sound fair. I hope Burton or anyone from Division 1 could bring home a State Championship in the next few years because it would be well deserved.
-
Re: My LPD Forecast
Exact point I was trying to make. You did it much better than I could have.
-
Re: My LPD Forecast
You still don't get it. Appy with 32 players and probably less caliber athletes wins 5 state titles against bigger and badder schools. Norton with 45 or 50, and some dang good skilled people would have 2 or 3 titles with a new approach.
-
Re: My LPD Forecast
Again Burrhead its like this
Appy wins their state titles against teams that are 100 students bigger
Norton is playing against teams more than double.
Its like us playing GC now, we can have a really good team but you match us up against them when they're good and we're good, and they're going to get us 18/20 if not more.
Unless of course you're now going on the size doesn't matter argument
Have you really crossed over to the Blue...?
-
Re: My LPD Forecast
Your right I don't get it.... By the way this is the first year Burton has had 49 players. Normally it is around 25-35 on a good season.. And what do you mean Appy had less caliber athletes, Travis Turner (If I remember correctly he could carry any team in the LPD on his shoulders when he played), Travis Clark, Jamie Jessee, any of those players could have played for PV or any team for that matter.. Those Appy teams used to beat down of PV, Gate City, the Old Lee High, not todays Lee High.... What approach would you suggest?

Re: My LPD Forecast
I would have liked to have seen what Tom would have done with the talent that Norton has had over the last few years. Jimbo is a good coach, but it would have been interesting.
-
Re: My LPD Forecast
Burrhead Appy played teams in the state finals that had 350 enrollments. JIB is facing 450+ enrollments now in a lot of cases.
-
Re: My LPD Forecast
Your right Coach Turner is a legend anybody would have liked to see what he would have done with that talent, but, with Nortons speed and talent, his smashmouth, run you over, beat your brains in style of play would not have worked with the athletes that Norton has IMO.
-
Re: My LPD Forecast
The whole Raider team is gifted with skill. Appalachia had 3 or 4 a team. Just my opinion.
-
Re: My LPD Forecast
Your crazy if you think they had just 3 of 4 a team. Especially in the 90s.
-
Re: My LPD Forecast
Tom was smart enough to have made adjustments. B.I. has figured it out this year at Wise, dumping the veer and installing the wishbone. Good coaches do what they have to.

Norton didn't beat any of those teams regularly like Appy. I think I made my point.

Re: My LPD Forecast
Thats cool and a good point, but you don't have to downgrade a good coach and run him in the ground like he doesn't know what the h&^% he's doing... That was the only point I was trying to get across.
-
Re: My LPD Forecast
Jimbo wasn't coach then either....Buster Large and Paul Hale were..... The whole point of this thread was about Jimbo's bad coaching.
-
Re: My LPD Forecast
Never downed him. Just thought one of the big 3 could've done better.
-
Re: My LPD Forecast
You may be right, we will never know, but What would Jimbo do with 80+ players on his team like Robbins and Colobro, Hmmm, What about that... Alright, I give up, you win.... I'm out

I was just giving my opinion. You have yours. No argument here, just an opinion. Don't leave mad!!!!!!!!!

Re: My LPD Forecast
I played under Buster, Hale, and Jimbo. Three Coaches in four years is pretty crazy. Each with their own style of play. I think we could have won a state title under Buster, but Appy had our number year in and year out. Then along came Hale. He just got a bad deal taking over for Buster. Burton just needed a quick fix. Then Jimbo came in as headcoach my Sr year and we made it to state. Got our [censored] handed to us lol. But that year we ran out of the I formation. That was something most of us were fimiliar(sp)to. Having played that in Pnut and some in JV. Also Jimbo was the defensive coach for many years prior to that. Anyways, look at what he runs now compare to then. He knew what had then and what he has now and has made the adjustments. You also have to consider the compettion up there is alot better then it is down here. IMO I think they have caught up with us and then wave goodbye as the passed us lol. Also alot of your D1 schools are like the D2 schools here. I would also venture to say that alot of those D1 schools up there play a few D3 and maybe a D4 school. That helps alot I think. Here a D1 school may play 2 or 3 D2 schools and maybe 1 D3. I doubted but it's a possiblity. But you can't beat up a coach who is has been to the state game 3 times. How many coaches can say that around here besides Robbins and Turner? Very Few I bet.
