Am i seeing things? PPL are actually predicting the Blue Knights to pull the upset? No offense to Coeburn, as they picked up a good win last week, and are trying to rebuild that program, but NO WAY. Even if Gate City in a down year for their standards, which I dont think they're as bad as some are hoping.... This game still wont be close.
I personally think it may turn out to be a decent game if Coeburn comes out and plays 100%. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure that Gate City is expected to blow the Blue Knights away, but at the same time, Gate City is coming off of a tough loss, while Coeburn is coming off of a big win.
Sure, it was the same way last year, but I believe that Gate City is a bit down this year in terms of the players they have - even if Tyler Parks is still present.
Predicted as a blowout or not, I'm still going to come and see what each team can do.
Everyone was ready to bury GC last year after their loss to Richlands, but they went on to have a pretty good season. I hope that is the case this time too. Having not seen either team play, I won't make any predictions. GO BLUE DEVILS!
GC by 30 pts...easy.
IMO GC did alot of growing up last week. I walked away feeling better than going. I expected GC to fold but to my surprise they step up their play and their were some real hard hitting. Richlands out matched GC no doubt. I feel GC will get better and better as the season progresses. Mike thier heart is there, the size & talent is there but how we learn to play as a team and Coach C play book, well the season just started so I guess we all will have to wait and see.
I believe gate city wins but coeburn will hang with them!

i thinks its asking alot of coeburn to contain both parks and anderson.....we all knew what to expect from parks but anderson's elusiveness really gives gate city a dual threat.....as bad as the devils put it on coeburn last year i have a hard time believing that coeburn has improved enough to keep this game close.......

Actually wematch up fairly well size wise to GC, they are not loaded with alot of big kids this year.

I think they will be able to this week. coach reed has probably been working the defense to death this week on tackeling, coverage, and etc. but coeburn might be able to make it a good ball game out of it.

i have a hard time believing coeburn is going to score more than 20 points......if richlands were to play coeburn they would put up 50 by halftime......the devil defense is NOT going to look so bad this week.......g.c 35 - coeburn 14
I agree. I mean Gate City is way different than Twin Springs. No reason why Gate City shouldn't dominate them from kickoff til the end of the game. I mean an upset can happen, we all remember 1999 PV at JJK. But I doubt that it will happen for Coeburn against GC.

With all of the people on here from Clintwood GOING ON AND ON AND ON about hoping to move down to Division 1 next year, complaining about being screwed out of the playoffs by Rye Cove or because someone else didn't beat a team they thought should have to help their postseason cause - not even mentioning your postings, burrhead, which is enough whining for the whole town of Clintwood - yeah I'd say there's a lot of whining from up that way too come to think of it.
first off, im from north. i played football for north. i go to gate city now, i dont play football for gate city. and there is no one from north playin for us. so before you go talkin about things you need to know at least a little bit what your talkin about...

One of the only ones who I have seen mention it much is Counts, and he doesn't mention it for Clintwood as much as he mentions all the changes and votes and such that goes on. When someone actually reads the VHSL minutes, you realize that they just enjoy that stuff a bit too much.
(You have to know Counts to understand that).
Would it help Clintwood? Sure it would. No question.
As for LPDFTBL's post, questioning others and saying whining, well, I guess maybe some of them do whine some, but then again, the biggest whining I have heard recently was when they were discussing bringing in the other teams. It appears a few of the D1 teams didn't want to see more competition come down to their level and was complaining about it heavily, but you know that's all probably just pretend whining. I mean why would Appy mind if someone else came down to their division they surely don't mind Gate City being in the district or anything....
Off topic a bit but has anyone heard an update as to wheather the Reasion D is going to expand its playoffs next season?
The VHSL has cleared the Current last week of the season of regular season games starting next season so that Reagions can add an extra round to the playoffs if they want. 6 team playoff sounds good an 8 team playoff may be to inclusave what do you guys think?

Yes whining, see anytime anything is said about possible VHSL plans, district changes, expanding playoffs...that's not news or anything of importantce obviously, its just whining to some.

Gate City wins 34-6.
Coeburn made too many crucial mistakes.. several fumbles, and one of the major mistakes was an interception around the 15-20 yard line that set Gate City up for quite an easy score.
I do have to give it to Coeburn, however, for coming out there and giving them a decent ball game, especially in the first half. The offense had a few good streaks (remember the 1st first-down that Shane Bright got? That was a good little run) and the defense also played pretty well, although they did let a few plays slip that shouldn't have gone by, such as the time when Tihlee Anderson (GC QB) broke loose and ran for a pretty long touchdown.
Gate City looked pretty good, but not mindblowingly powerful. Tyler Parks did, however, have several good runs, although I never saw any really long breaks or anything.
Coeburn still needs a ways to go and has plenty to learn, but I can't complain - they came out and played hard. I saw all of the running backs giving solid efforts.. Shane Bright, Burrhead Nixon, and Damien Mooney all impressed me with the way they ran the ball. The QB did have a rough game, but there's plenty of time to improve.
So congrats to both teams.. the score may have been a bit lopsided, and I may not have stayed for the entire game (left the 3rd quarter), but it was a good game overall.. should have my footage up by tomorrow or Sunday.

According to the Kingsport Times Coeburn actually had about 50 more yds offense than GC.

Yeah you guys should have won.
It is also hard to get alot of yards when a team starts on the opponents side of the 50 almost everytime. But you are right GC will lose to half the LPD this year.
The turnovers killed us most..
but we gotta look past this game and move on for Next Week.
I'm still proud of our boys for playing hard. Good luck to both teams next week.

I don't know that we should have won but the game should have been closer, with us possibly pulling out the win in the end. I just hope that the players don't just look at the score and realize that they actually did play with GC and can play with other teams in the district.

Coeburn played hard and played hard the whole game, have to give it up to them. They in my opinion shouldn't finish at the bottom of the LPD as some have forecasted. The Bright kid is a hoss, no doubt. He'll cause opponents problems this year barring injury, which I hope that won't be the case. He like the other kids on Coeburn's team have a lot of heart. Some of us were talking during the game that if Coeburn doesn't lose a lot to graduation, they'll win the Cumberland next year from what we could see. That's just our opinions, please no one think we were wanting in written in stone.
Gate City still has quite a long way to go, but they have the kids that can make it happen - it's all up to them. I personally don't think that Coeburn could have pulled out the win, but was impressed with their performance as mentioned above. The only effective offensive attack they had was Bright between the tackles. The QB couldn't get off a pass and lived a rough life in the pocket, especially in the second half. The sweeps around the end worked okay for the first couple of series, but seems as if GC's defense adjusted accordingly. Coeburn's defense seemed like it was keying on Parks the whole night, which in turn allowed GC's QB to run more freely. Even the FB was picking up 4-8 yards a pop due to the obvious focus on Parks. I do know that GC does have a pretty decent passing attack, which they didn't use hardly at all. In my opinion, if it had been a closer game we'd seen that passing attack more than what we did.
All in all, I believe Coeburn has a great opportunity to post their best record since 2001 & possibly defeat some LPD opponents that they normally don't.
Just my personal opinions, don't crucify me for it.
