Computer Help
CD drive will not open, right before it quit working the green status light started flashing from Green to Red, stayed red for a while, now no light and will not open...
took the PC apart and made sure no dust buildup was there, disconnected the drive, then after that it turned on for maybe a minute, now back to the same thing????
any suggestions?

Re: Computer Help
Prolly gonna have to buy another drive.
-
Re: Computer Help
^^^^ If that's the case Castle, they're pretty inexpensive. Here's a link for some below, it may even be easier just to hit Wally World.

Re: Computer Help
Yeah I definitely agree with the other guys - sounds to me like it's dying and needs to be replaced.
-
Re: Computer Help
Might be worth trying to reinstall the drivers, just in case somehow a driver got corrupted.
-
Re: Computer Help
Doesn't really sound like a driver issue.
When you reconnected the drive, did it make any noises before it stopped working again?
FWIW, Blue and Lung's suggestion is probably your best bet. It sounds to me like the drive has gone tits up. I haven't looked in a long time, but WalMart used to have a LiteOn DVD-RW drive for around $80. I've been using one for the last 8 months, heavy use (burn 7-10 discs a week, archiving photos and home movies) and it performs flawlessly.

Re: Computer Help
I agree that the drive probably is goofy but if it worked for a bit then didn't and probably looking at replacing drive, never hurts to do the extra few minutes to reinstall drivers...seen crazier stuff

When it's M$, anything can work. But I'd say if the drivers were screwed, then it wouldn't have worked at all.

Re: Computer Help
drivers were fine, checked all of that..
don't have the time to mess and mess with it, prolly just gonna buy a new one
by the way lung, great cd's, having to play them on the 360 now since the PC is jacked..

Re: Computer Help

Re: Computer Help
haha
by the way, forcing DNS is a crock, does no good at all!!
u still up there mang, havent seen ya in a while?

Re: Computer Help
May be mechanical. I had a similar problem awhile back with a cd drive. Took it apart and one of the small gears had a crack in it, causing it not to sit firmly on the spindle. May want to check that.

Re: Computer Help
well, none of these suggestions turned out to work...
power goes out for a split second up here, PC reboots, and she's workin good as new now?!

Re: Computer Help
Off of Castle's problem to mine. I need to replace the motherboard on my home computer, it is a Dell Dimension 4550, any suggestions on the best place to get one. ANd the first person to recommend Tiger Direct gets a swift kick in the arse, got one from them that I have to send back and get credit for, they have absolutley no tech support all they do is look up parts that should work and say yeah this is the one and sell it to ya. The one I got from them doesn't have a place to plug in the front panel usb's and the guy I was on the phone with yesterday just told me to not plug them in, this would be like a mechanic putting a new motor in your car and leaving off the A/C compressor and telling you just don't use the A/C.

Re: Computer Help
newegg.com OR get it straight from Dell. Dell can give you exactly what you already have (which is a good thing).
-
Re: Computer Help
The problem with Dell is the cost will be about 3-4 times what I can get it elsewhere.
Tried newegg.com, called and one of the first things the voice message says is we don't offer any kind of technical advice or product look-up.

Re: Computer Help
Should be a part # or something on the MB. Should be able to match that up with something on Newegg's website.
-
Re: Computer Help
Yeah. newegg.com is a good place to find comp. stuff. Usually the cheapest too.
So Castle, the 360 plays MP3 disks?
-
Re: Computer Help
sure does mang, just not those m4a files
speaking of which, what in the world to i need to use to play those files?
-
Re: Computer Help
I believe .m4a files are the same thing as .mp4, so just download a utility that can resave files into another format, and resave the song into MP3 format.
GOLDWAVE is a good utility that can re-save sound files into different formats:

Re: Computer Help
I didn't know that I stuck any of those on there. They must have been in a folder with some other stuff. Who knows what you got?? Maybe something you shouldn't see. Quicktime should play them though.
