Our poor poochie dog

Our youngest child, 1 year old mutt Aiko, has pulled a failed Houdini act.
She somehow managed to escaped the fenced back yard & disappear for maybe upwards of an hour.

Indian_Dad hunted her down and brought her back home. At first glance she had a little boo boo on her head and a leg. I went to inspect it closer. I saw more cuts, then more, then more. her legs are all cut up (back legs mostly). A cut on her head. I rolled her over to check the insides of her legs. her belly - every part of it that doesn't have fur up to her chest (and some that does and also her girly part) is flaming red & raw. She's limping. She's hurting.

Being the genious blonde I am I couldn't figure out what was wrong with her. My sister clued me in. She was probably hit or skimmed by a car. Come to think of it, she does like to "chase" trucks through the fence.

Poor girly. Indian_Dad went out and got her some aspirin for the pain & swelling, antibiotic ointment for the oozing wounds. We'll keep an eye on her & see if she needs to go to the vet tomorrow.

Moral of the story: dogs are sneaky animals.

when did this happen?

Late this afternoon sometime. We didn't see it happen but the injuries fit "car hit"

She's acting puny right now (but not too puny to eat some cheese).
Droopy ears. Walking slow. The big pitiful puppy dog eyes.

One leg worries us.. she's holding it off the ground when she's laying down. A visit to Donna or Dr. Rasnick may be in order tomorrow.

We're so careful aout these dogs. She pulled a real stunt getting out of the yard.

I was gonna reccomend the vet in Pound that is who my wife takes our pets to and they are great. Although we will most likely start taking them to Duffield sometime, the secretary down at Pound told my wife that Dr. Crabtree that was there is opening an office there and my wife likes her better.

Given my choices I'd take my dog to Donna. Unfortunately with my work schedule it's just not possible.

I like Rasnic. He's a good guy. Extremely reasonable rates. And I love he's open late several nights of the week (just not Friday). He's not a fan of Dachshunds but he still treats the dogs well, so I guess I'll have to forgive him for that.

Donna and I have a very good relationship. She has taken fantastic care of all our family animals since the day she opened her practice.

She took care of my first dog, Ebony, all her life.
She developed bad arthritis at an early age and Donna had her feeling like a puppy again. Ebony was not a people-loving kind of dog. Her job was to protect and defend and scare people, but she just adored Donna. Donna could do anything to her without muzzling her and never have a bit of problem.

In Ebony's last few months of life she spent a lot of time at PVH but Donna never crated her. She would stay open late so I could talk to her if I was coming in from Blacksburg. They babied her. Donna even sent me a dish garden when Ebony died.

Mom's dog developed an infection recently - it was pretty bad and she's an old dog (14). The receptionist said they were booked up for appointments (not a surprise they always are). Mom was told she could bring her dog in for the day and they'd work her in. This dog is mom's baby - she won't leave her dog when she's not feeling well. Mom called and asked for Donna specifically and Donna told her to come down she'd take care of it right then. She's just always gone above and beyond for us.

I dont know about Dr.Whatshername. Her walking out on Donna and all her clients like that, leaving a lot of people hanging, that was less than professional. I seriously doubt I'll ever use her services.

My bad it's not Crabtree it is Dr. Jessee, She did leave but there is alot more to the story than she just took off. Her and Dr. Stidham had different views on customer relations, Stidham likes to sugar coat things a little to much whereas Jessee will just tell you how it is and what needs to be done to get your animal well. She did this with our DUKE and it pretty much saved his life, Stidham didn't like the way she was blunt with my wife about his condition, myself I would rather have someone like this rather than try and console me and make me feel better about it.

I cant say my experience with Donna was one of sugarcoating.
It was facts. Treatment was discussed. Pros & Cons. Possible side effects. What to expect what not to expect, etc. And she did it in a way I'd want my own doctor to discuss treatment with me.
It is nice to have someone consider the owner's feelings and what the owner's going through, as long as the owner isn't lied to. Pets are family members to many folks. Vets need a bedside manner too.
Her sending a plant when Ebony died is just an example of that. It showed that she cared.

But you can't deny the other vet walked out on clients that were depending on her. She literally got up and walked out the door when she had appointments stacked a mile high. Just left those people high and dry.
A professional can deal with disagreements long enough to get through scheduled appointments - if anything to benefit the clients.

True she could/should have handled things differently. I personally have never met either one of them my wife is the one that takes care of all that and I am just going from what she has told me and she really likes Jessee the biggest thing for her is that she treated our animals the same way anytime she would call Jessee would do whatever to work her in especially with DUKE he has a kidney problem and she was the one that went above and beyond to get him straightened out even going as far as sending him to Va. Tech and talking to them and getting it so that it wouldn't cost us near as much. I was really impressed with her concern for him and how she would call every day or two to check on him.

I hope I don't offend any Dr. Goins fans out there (if there are any), but I will say this:
It's sure nice to have these other vets around, so that Goins isn't the only option.

I like Dr. Stidham but I will be taking all 8 of my babies to Dr. Jessee...The main reason she left was do to employees...They would come in when they wanted too..Dr. Jessee like to be prompt and get things done for our babies...Dr. stidham just wanted to sugar coat things with them...You can't do that and run a place professionally...Our babies have pain and feel'ns too and I want someone whos going to be there and take care of my babies on time to take care of them...Anyway Dr. Jessee saved Duke's life...As for Dr. Stidham...Shes a great Vet too...But I have had so much success with Jessee that I'll be going to Duffield this spring...And as for the Vet in Wise....I wouldn't take anything to him...TheBeast had a cat to be fixed by him....Needless to say....She's had kittens....We have one of them...And his Aunt had one to die after leaving his care.....

Looks like we'll be taking her to Dr. Fuller in Gate City after work this evening.
My sister is making the appointment.

I wouldn't be so worried if she hadn't woke up vomiting this morning.

And Dr. Goins is a small-pet butcher. I've personally known too many healthy pets die in his care.
One of them was a kitten owned by my boss in college. She took it in for regular shots. It came back dead.
One was a dog owned by Dr. Wilson at the college. She took it in for regular care (vaccinations & check up). She left it with them for the day. At the end of the day they called and told her she could pick up her dog. So she went. The dog was dead.

And our pets were terrified of him. He was too rough.

Fuller is who I take my dogs too. He is a real nice guy, and does a great job.

There used to be another older man who worked in GC, but he has retired. His name escapes me right now, but he was a super nice guy and done a good job. I just avoid Broadwater in GC though. [img]/LDPforum/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif[/img]

I think my mom goes to the Vet in Pound. She is always talking about how nice Donna is. If that is the right place.

Fuller was on his way to NC this afternoon so I couldn't go there. So I called Donna at about 3:00, and she told me to bring her in asap and she'd take care of her.

I was at work so my sister picked her up and took her, and I met them there after work. Donna stayed until 6:00 for us.
Aiko's X-ray was clear, except for her bowels being backed up a mile. No broken bones. She had puked all day, and made no exception at PVH. It just seems her insides got shaken up from the impact - a bit bruised. No real internal injuries.

Her temp was up, but not terribly high.
She got antibiotics to help keep all the cuts & road rash from getting infected. She got some food that's very easy on the stomach, and got some stuff for nausea.

Glad you didn't get any more bad news. Hope she makes a full recovery.
