Tomorrow
My buddies Shoe and Freddy get to sample ROSP's world-renowned food for the first time. Buckle up boys: You are in for one hell of a ride.
I would suggest bringing a few dollars for the vending machine

Re: Tomorrow
Ah, yes tomorrow. It's going to be an exciting day lol. But come on the food can't be all that bad. Seems like some you up there are eating good, lol.

Re: Tomorrow
You mean they are taking a tour? I'd love to do that. Nottoway Correctional Center scared me straight and I'm a responsible person. Couldn't even imagine the two max facilities. Love to hear the stories after this one.
-
Re: Tomorrow
I've lost 17 pounds in the last month and a half since I quit eating there.
-
Re: Tomorrow
Actually tomorrow is our first day starting. I would assume they will be talking to us about the job and giving us a tour. Not sure how many will be there (20 give or take a few), but I know they are hiring like mad.
-
Re: Tomorrow
Because they keep firing all of the good officers. I was there for 5 1/2 years and I could not wait to get out of there. Some people love the job though. It is a job that is not meant for everyone.
-
Re: Tomorrow
If its not being to nosy, what does a prison guard make starting out?
-
Re: Tomorrow
When I started it was 21,000 but now I think it is 26,000.
-
Re: Tomorrow
Whats that pan out to, about $12 or $13 and hour? I think the federal prison pays a little more than that dont they?
-
Re: Tomorrow
Feds pay well. They start in the 30's with all of the OT that you want to work.
-
Re: Tomorrow
Still plenty of good officers left
ROSP has been mined by the mines as of late so to speak, so they are doing plenty of hiring.
-
Re: Tomorrow
I know there are still plenty left. It is a tough job and is quite thankless. I moved on and am much happier and in better health. Some people are meant to work there and others aren't. I just was one that was not meant to work there.

Re: Tomorrow
You know a Joe Stanley Inidan Dad?
-
Re: Tomorrow
You fellas be careful up there. About 80 percent have girlfriends on the side, and the other 20 percent are looking!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Tomorrow
Some Flemings and others got the shaft at the Onion. There are some hot babes that work up there, especially in medical!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Re: Tomorrow
If those fellas do what they are paid to do and keep it professional, then they'll join me in the group that isn't looking (not the 20% that is looking -one woman is enough fer this ol boy to deal with )
-
Re: Tomorrow
Gotcha. Got to keep them restroom doors closed!!!!!!!!!!
-
Re: Tomorrow
Not saying that stuff doesn't go on there-every place you work has that, but I try to pay attention to the inmate that may have that shank in his shoe instead of the wiggletails running around.
-
Re: Tomorrow
I'm not putting you in that group, just have heard some pretty wild tales!

No surprise there. He's just a buddy of mine who just got hired. Kind of goofy, wouldnt ever think he would be suited to be a prison guard. Wanted to see how he was doing.

Re: Tomorrow
Do what you can by the book. You leave and there is no blood on the floor, it's been a good day.
It's a prison it's not a home for those who just forgot their way.
It's a home for those who think their bad, until they end up there or at WRSP.
Look out for yourselves and your co-workers. And when you go out front search let the job stay there.
It's not a job for everyone. More mentally draining at times than physical. And it can turn physical faster than you think or would ever imagine. Your dealing with a variety of folks. Some who well, should be in a mental hospital, for the criminally insane. It's a job and one that is gonna always be there.
Kind of beats working 5 years to get laid off and lose everything.
Just got to have the mindset, im here and im gonna make it work.
Fear None. Respect All.
1,100 people just begin to hate you. Simply because you wear a color they don't respect.
Many need to tour a prison. Talk about a culture shock. You learn alot, and you learn how people learn to adapt, and develop. Sub culture galore. Be a real wake up for many in this area. Esp. those who think their gang banger wanntabees.
The food. Yeah it takes some getting use to. Worse thing in staff dining.
Remember who makes it. Their not your best friends.

Re: Tomorrow
do they let anyone come in and taKe a tour??
-
Re: Tomorrow
No (due to level of security)
Changed that LPDFTBL to the best of my knowledge-haven't seen a tour in a long time.

Re: Tomorrow
You can usually call the Warden's office and request a visit or tour. This will be based on what they feel is sufficient.
Have to remember one thing. Their main goal is to keep the public safe and to insure no inmate, in their custody, escapes or is able to communicate outside of what is permissible by the VADOC
Most of the time you will be given the standard questions of for what purpose.
No cameras, cell phones, keys, pagers are allowed as inmates are not suppose to be filmed, nor is the prison, nor are you allowed to transport anything inside that could be given or stolen.
Basically just take your license photo id and your keys which will be locked up.
You will be searched.
Usually most prisons do not care to give you a tour. However, you probably will be given a background check, then searched as is everyone who enters a prison.Including the Wardens and all staff.
Myself. If it was me, i would try to ask several to go, friends relatives etc, etc.
A tour.
May help to relate to those you talk to, that you want to learn, and hopefully learn to relate to others. That this is not where you want to end up.
Most Wardens and Asst. Wardens are more comfortable with this.
Personally i think it should be something schools and many of the juvenile homes do.
To show troubled teens what their futures may be.
It's a real wake up call for many.
You see a real diversified group. And you learn that it's a group of people inside of a group. Many type people living in the same place, yet totally different.
And you have staff who have to adapt to those people and be able to relate to them.
Call the local prisons and ask for a visit. Let them know it's for learning or if you can get a group together to go.
Most of the time. This is something they like to do. It helps some see the reality of what a prison is all about.
And yeah drop by and try out the staff dining. Learn what it's all about.
Don't just look but ask a few questions of those who work there.
You probably won't be able to talk to inmates. Because of the potential, of well, them using it as an excuse to manipulate the situation.
Give it a whirl.
It's a part of our job market. And those who well have not been there need to see and be able to relate it back to others.
Some times you don't see it all in a tour. But you will get a sense of some of what it's all about.
No one expect those who have worked there can describe what it's like to go from nothing, to an all our fury of emotions, then back to calm in a matter of minutes.
And yeah that is for inmates and staff.
Sometimes it is a boiling pot, sometimes it's a simmer pot, but it's always a pot that you don't want to get to hot.
Sometimes it's more mental. Then again sometimes it can be more physical than you think.
Depends on the temperature in the pot and how long it simmers, and who knows how long somethings seem to far out of the norm.
Time can be a slow things sometimes.
But call and request a tour. Like i said a small group is better. But it don't hurt to ask.

Re: Tomorrow
I wish that they would allow the Coalfield to tour and take some pics-show the public what life is like there. The Corrections Officer is the dirty [censored] of law enforcement. You never hear anything about us unless one of us screws up. Day after day, night after night, we do what we do, silently we serve. Uk hit the nail in this thread. It truly is a thankless job, but we do it diligently and ethically nonetheless. Somebody has to do it.
-
Re: Tomorrow
yeah id like to take a tour of it..
im up thru there all the time..
got another question for ya Indian_Dad..my dad is buried in the graveyard on the Pound side of the prison and sometimes if we go up there at dark they spot light us??..whats that for??
-
Re: Tomorrow
Anytime you work Towers you spotlight all nightime movement, making sure that it isn't some con's family with binoculars scoping out the facility.
-
Re: Tomorrow
oh alright...just wondered about that..
do they ever radio in cops to come up there if someone is there for awhile??
-
Re: Tomorrow
That's what Roving Patrol is for
