Sounded like they played fairly good D, just need to score some points. The 2 players who are currently out will help if and when they get back and Anderson should be 100% soon. Good win today against TS.

TS couldn't have hit a 10' bucket in the second half. GC shot the ball better than they have over their last 3 and that is why they won.

40-31?

Did they play 4 minute quarters? Ervin averaged 30 some for a stretch at TS, Id be willing to bet Peters, Shoemaker or McDonald averaged near 20 some.

I think GC's problem is that they're a bunch of football players trying to play basketball. They don't have that pure basketball player that they have had in the past.

For TS, Dockery has been a little under the weather for the last couple of weeks. In order for TS to improve, they need another player to be able to consistantly put in 10-15 a game.

Both teams will certainly improve as the season goes along. The upside for GC is that they shouldn't have to improve all that much considering the competition, or lack thereof, in the LPD.

GC was much better than they were yesterday, TS is getting worse in my opinion. I'd play box and one on Dockery and make somebody else beat me. On another note, TS is heading downhill fast in terms of a program in my opinion, not a normal TS team this year and losing alot of kids off this team. As far as competition in the LPD goes, the entrie Region D isn't hitting on much outside of Castlewood (who I haven't seen play) I've not seen a Region D team play that I'd put up there as a team that could compete with the TS, GC, TV, or even the Norton teams of past. From what I've seen out of the LPD it could end up in a 3 or 4 way tie, there is little to no difference between GC, PV, Coeburn, or CW. It's just whoever shows up and plays, get two kids going that night you win. Today GC got Hackney and Anderson going (along with Salyers) thats why they won. Twin Springs couldn't get anybody other than Dockery going thats why they lost. Same can be said about about the CW/Coeburn game and the Coeburn/PV game. These games this year will come down to whoever shows up.

TS actually played better today than they have all year (at least in the 5 games I have seen). They're right on the brink of getting there. Jordan was a lot more aggressive today. Estep is getting close to being able to finish again. I think McNew should be in the starting lineup in the next game as he brings good intensity (but no O) on defense.

Matthews is looking better every game, although he can give you a stinker. It is going to take some time for him to get used to playing in front of more than 50 people.

I don't really know that Gate City is improving at the rate some expected, but they are still top three in the LPD for what that's worth.

I have to agree regarding Twin Springs. I've been watching them play since the pre-season game against JJ Kelly and just shaking my head in disbelief. I was expecting TS to have some decline after losing Warner, but this team is not even on the same page as the 2004-05 and 2005-06 Titans. I hate to see this too in Dockery's senior year because I still think he is one of the best basketball players to play in Region D in the last three years. Looking at Twin Springs' varsity and JV teams this year, I get the inclination that we might be seeing a similar decline in Twin Springs that we have seen in Council following their 2002 season.

I also have to agree re the competition in Region D. We have a similar situation in basketball that we had in football where there was basically Norton and then every other team trailing far behind. Now, in basketball you've got Castlewood and then there's "everybody else."

I don't think Twin Spring's fans will have as much to worry about in a few weeks as their getting not one, but two European transfers yet again. Maybe its just me, but this has got to stop. Seems like the Twin Spring's faithful just doesn't have faith in their own kids or something and getting recruits year in and year out isn't helping the players coming up. If I had a kid whose playing time got taken away due to a European recruit, I'd be a bit upset.

LOL. Well there's been a lot of hype about recruits, but I'll have to see it to believe it.

Everything I'm hearing from around Nickelsville way is that there is no recruit, transfer, or exchange student this year. If there is, then it is the best kept secret in Scott County. Now, I won't be surprised if it does happen, but I'm not expecting it.

Unless something major happens, Twin Springs may not even make it to the Region D tournament this year, which brings up an intersting question. When is the last time Twin Springs did not make it to the Region D tournament?

Yeah, from what I've heard they have no recruits coming this year.. The TS folks on the CD board are claiming that there aren't any but you have to take their word with a grain of salt.. And I keep in close contact with several people from TS and they haven't mentioned it.. Wouldn't it be something if they finished last in district play, then a couple recruits arrived before the district tourney and they advanced to regions and won region d.. I don't know when the last time TS did not make it to regions.. There's been several years that they wouldn't have made it without their recruits though. I agree that there is a decline in talent at TS right now but they'll bring it in if it's not there.. Maybe not this year but in the years to come they will I'd about guarantee it.

The 98-99 season. St. Paul and Castlewood went to the tourny that year.

I'm not taking away from Twin Springs and what they've done in Region D basketball. They've had some very good local talent, even if they've had some "help" along the way. As far as records go, I guess Ervin set the bar about as high as it can get in Southwest Virginia.

Honestly, I'd like to see Twin Springs make it to the Region because they always make it very interesting, like the triple-OT barnburner with Gate City last year in the semis. But they've got a long way to go to beat out some other very deserving CD teams.

Yeah TS has definitely had some great athletes that were home grown.. I don't want them to make it to regions.. I feel that St. Paul and Rye Cove are overdue for an appearance.. Who's to say that they can't make it just as interesting as TS has in the past??

Since CW joined in 96-97, CW and TS have represented the CD every year but 98-99 when SP went. TW went in 94-95, and 95-96 I do believe RC went the 2 previous years. I cannot remember the last time Ervinton was in the regionals.

You might be right, I was thinking it was my senior year, but it may have been my junior. Now that I think back, your right because my senior year was when Clintwood and Pound represented Region D and TS played CW in the opening round, or semis.

Twin springs will be fine... we have a young team.. dock is the only player with any kind of experience...we should be ok ...
gc will win the lpd like always.. if pv and norton are supposed to be the other top teams.. gc will have no problems.....ts beat them ...no other team in the lpd can handle that pressure .. gc will also get a lot better when they get parks and the transfer back....the lpd is weak other than gc....

castlewood is by far the best team around.. as bad as i hate to say that.. they are very solid all around.. i guess thats what u get if u have been practicing ever since march...

ha.. ha.. if they started practicing in march then they did it individually in their spare time.. you used to claim that CW kids didn't work on their game at all and now you claim that they started practicing in march?? don't those contradict?? most of them were into baseball in march and on into june.. then they had basketball camps in the summer just like everyone else and started practice in the fall like everyone else.. probably a lot later than TS because their football season lasted longer than 2 weeks.. And I'm curious why you say TS has a "young" team.. I would say inexperienced yeah because of being replaced, but young?? Aren't 3 of their starting 5 seniors and half of their entire team seniors?? This is according to the roster on their website..

Only three out of the eleven on Gate City's roster played football this past season, and only one of them starts (Tihlee). The other two are Matt Bays and Tyler Parks, and Parks may not even see the hardwood this season due to his injury during football season.

Now Darrell, since I only posted a whopping seven (7) times in all of the year 2006, I really don't consider me showing up now to tell Bobby how many kids on Gate City's basketball roster played on the football team this past season to be just showing up when Gate City has a lead (?) in a sport. I mean, how many district games have been played so far? I think GC has played two, there's still 12 or so left for them - a long road still yet to be traveled for all. To be honest, tonight was only the second time I have seen them this year. A little too early to tell who is what in my opinion, knowing there's lots of talent all the way through the district out on the hardwood this season.

Haha, why the long lay off from the forum? I hope I get to go Saturday, I think we've won one game against GC in basketball since they came into the league. After that our season was all down hill.

With work, especially with me working out of town for most of the past year, playing taxi driver for my kids in their endeavors while I am in town and attending their practices and games, I really don't get much opportunity to sit down and post as often as I have in the past - which wasn't much then either as you can tell by looking back at my postings. I wish I had the time to hang out on the board and post like some others, but such fun as this takes a backseat to family - especially with my kids getting older.
